I got the impression from various comments of people behind the scenes that Gene tried to walk away from start trek after TOS, but kept geting pulled back.

I also got the impression that he didn't like any of the movies after his involvement in TMP, and didn't like the direction of TNG after he created it.

And yet, star trek's biggest success stories range from some of the movies to the later years of TNG. All done without Roddenberry.

Just cause someone created the thing doesn't mean they always know best, just look at Lucas's version of star wars episodes 1-3.

I hope Abrams is more of Roddenberry then Meyer because Gene created Star Trek so GR legacy for Star Trek is more important then Meyers.

article;,,Meyer even opened the film with ‘In the 23rd century’ abandoning the Trek convention of ’stardate’.
Only reason he did that was that his father would now what century TWOK revolved. Negative part was he ruined the mystique of Star Trek time-frame.

article;,Meyer went on to write the 4th film in the franchise (still the biggest earner)
Wrong. TMP sold more ticket in USA and more importantly TMP sold almost twice as much tickets as TVH in the international market that lifts TMP as biggest earner not TVH

article;,,It is noteworthy that Star Trek V, which seemingly killed the franchise again, was the first film Roddenberry was involved in since the first film,,
False. I have heard this from Shatner himself that Roddenberry had advised him not to make movie about,,God,, because it was tricky subject in Star Trek universe(he was right)

#4. Difference between TMP as film and rest off TOS movies is that people making TMP were experience big screen filmmakers and people behind later movies(Harve Bennet and Nick Meyer) were experience in television. Actually TWOK was made on television devision in Paramount .

I have high hopes that Star Trek XI will be successful as it is first Star Trek MOVIE with TOS crew at their prime. Cant wait.

Nonsense. What makes TMP a film versus, say, ST4? TMP was an over-budget mismatch of set pieces and tone poems in search of a plot. Or perhaps you think it was a film because it had an overrated director who, at the time, was working on a gap of 14 years since his last good movie?

The article above (J.J. as Meyer, etc.) should be required reading for all Trek fans. All genre fans, in fact...what the fanboys want is almost always a bad idea. Make a *good* movie aimed at a wider audience, and the fanboys will fall in line.

Roddenberry had no more involvement with ST5 than he did with any of the other post-TMP films. If anything, his involvement decreased with every film. However, on a conceptual level, he disliked 5 and 6 the most.

Also, no discussion of Star Trek's success can go without mentioning Michael Piller, who contributed more to Star Trek than Meyer even while staying within Roddeberry's guidelines (for TNG, at least).
