why are we messing about with the original series? I am tired of these studio types mucking about with the "look" of the orginal episodes. It is akin to what G. Lucas did to the orginal Star Wars Movies. Why don't we just go back and "improve" upon the Mona Lisa, or Michaeangelo's "David"?

These eppisodes represent an era. We should preseve them in their orginal state. There is something terribly Orwellian abouth this whole business of revamping.

The old version of the show is not aging well at all. It looks too fake and too dumb. But good luck telling some dumb hard core Trek fan that. Just look at the crap they rather watch. The new CGI makes the show look a lot better.

But once again the fans prove that they are way too picky and want too much or they don't know what they want at all. Myabey they shuldn't have made them. Not because I don't like them I do of course but.... the fans don't deserve any of it.

I know how hard it is to make a model with multiple layers of paint and airbrushing alongside the number of hours put into electrical wiring, vaccu-forming and detail put into a model, especially since when you're done you have an actual tactile object to touch and look at. I am constantly impressed with the ability to render and create amazing special effects in new movies, especially the effects in movies like King Kong, but why would you go back and spit in the face of the model makers who probably put weeks of their lives into making the multiple models used in the original series? This is a prime example of new technology replacing one of the oldest, most difficult and most respected trades in Hollywood and TV. Also, I found the models and matte lines to be part of the charm of the old show, and since I have recently bought the Complete Original Series, I am glad I can sit down and enjoy the highly detailed models with all the film grain.

Um, I just want to know.....WHY???? Why do thus??? There is NO NO NO reason! At all! Oh, boo hoo, a show made in the sixties doesn't look like a show made today! No shit!

I find this disrespectful to the original model makers, matte artists, and other technicians who put work into TOS. I really do. Thank god they did this AFTER the DVDs came out so that there would be a version of the originals preserved. I find this a really despicable move and another bad attempt to wring some interest into Trek, which as a franchise, really is dying. Shame on Paramount, shame.

Actually, these new special effects of the ship look just horrible. Personally, I think that as a viewer you should not be able to see that the effects are computer generated images. The less you notice that the effects are CGI the better they are. Just think of the effect shots of the Enterprise used in the original version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture: although this movie is more than 25 years old, the effect shots of the ship still look fanatastic and are much better than most of the stuff that is being created with computer technology today. As with the Original Star Trek Series many of the effect shots of the Enterprise didn't look bad because of the model, but because of the limited technology being used shoot the model. If they really had wanted to recreate the effects of TOS for a release in HD in a way that's true to the original, they should have either used the original model if still existant or built a new Enterprise model and done new motion control work. The point is: there aren't really many different effect shots in TOS because the tended to reuse the same shots all over again (e.g. they always used the same shots of the Enterprise in orbit, just composited it with different planets). Redoing the shots using modern motion control work would have been much better than redoing the effects as CGI. Though undoubtedly more expensive, this really would have given Star Trek a more movie-like look. The costs shouldn't have been to high, because there's probably not more than 5 minutes of different space shots in the whole series.

Hi from Chile: just about the captions ,( as for the films, nothing happening here.)
Old Flyby: the new one looks like a Marvel Toys. The old has the mistery on it, that was haze blue, blurred lights giving mystery, with less light like in deep space.
:Bird of Prey : Just more light on the new version, but from where it came ? More stars, but that could only be because the old one was in other section of the Galaxy (with less stars in it.)
Kirk and Spock: Now they look more humane, less elongated.
Saucer shot : horrible
Plasma weapon : OK, New phaser : OK, The bridge group: OK, Kirk and McCoy : OK.
So: the enhanced effects on objects FAILS. But the corrections on people is FINE. (Perhaps the team who did this are specialist in PEOPLE.)

"olde timey" hit the nail on the head. Also notice that nearly all members of the cast (men and women) have at least some amount of mascara on, that was pretty apparent even in the poor quality 80\'s syndication repeats I watched as a kid.
