If they wanted the recreate the look of the original effects for HD, why did they have to do CGI effects of the ships. With the Original Series having just a few minutes of stock effect shots being reused over the whole three seasons, motion control work would not have been that expensive and would have given the Remastered version more of a movie-like look. Think of the motion control effects of the starship Enterprise in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Even after more than 25 years those shots of the ship look fantastic. Just image how good these effects in the remastered versions would be, if they were model shots (like the TNG effect shots of the Enterprise but in HiDef).

One thing that concerned me the most was the way they decided to do the phasers and proximity phasers. I just saw Darrens take on them on his site, and yes that makes sense. I was quite suprised myself when I went back to watch the original Balance Of Terror to see that it looked like they had been more creative with the proximity phasers than the CBS remastered effort. What concerned me about it is that anybody, a fan, would have seen that as something to take special care with. So are these guys working on the CBS versions fans? Or hacks.

By the way Darren I watched the TMP DVD again on thursday. Only the second time I'd watched it time since I bought it a few years ago, and watching the documentary about the directors cut edition has just as much wow factor now as it did 5 years ago. You looked a bit younger as well. Why can't that team of people be working on this project I thought to myself.

you are joking right? That screams of mid 90's CGI.

The official CGI Enterprise at the very least looks like the model it is emulating.

reflections on TOS Enhanced "Balance of Terror"

Good:
1) The Digital Transfers were top notch. Well worth the wait.
2)CGI Enterprise: Good work on keeping the original look and scale.
3) Sound remastering: Much better.

Bad:
1) Syndication cuts: These were godawful (but since the new DVD's will be coming out, I can't complain too much) and JARRING for even a person who hadn't seen the episode (had a buddy go, "Did they make a bad cut somewhere? Did I miss something?" Guy's review your synidcation cuts if you are trying to push this remaster. Sheesh

Nits
1) 'Bouncy' Romulan ship: recheck when the Romulan first decloaks on it's assault run against the asteroid. It's like it crests a hill then drops. What was that?
2) Cloaking device: I dunno....the Romulan old school cloak looks weird.

Suggestion: Considering the shoestring budget of the original series, I think we can afford to fart up the backgrounds and various exterior shots of the original series a little bit.
If the Big E is around a planet that supposed to be technologically advanced or a major starbase, how about a few sattilites or ships in the background just to make the place look a little more busy. It won't really detract from the story and might adda bit more depth to the show

I did not like the fly by where the Enterprise comes from the left side of the screen, and banks left...I think it looked hokey...but for the most part I liked what I saw...and I liked MIRI, even though all they did was use a real cool looking Earth effect rather than the 'globe' shot we got in the 60s...

But yes..I agree..DOOMSDAY is either going to be really good..or really bad..I can't see any middle ground on that one..

I dont belive how bad quality of special effects and flying objects they can make with that amount of MONEY and EQUIMENT in year of 2006!

Watch this Star Trek parody trailer (Star Wreck) below, which has been made in "amateur- home-made- level". Compare quality of those flying objects and lighting.

Straight link to trailer (MPEG-2 DVD-Quality) (106mb):
