Alias was great for two years then got really bad when Abrams left to do Lost which was great until he left to do MI3. Lets just hope that Trek XI gets all his attention

I don't see a lot of ST in Felicity I have to say. It was about college age angst more then anything else. And yes JJ likes to write for women.

BTW many pepople he use in his shows have been through Felicity as a guest star or part of the supporting cast at some point or another.

Greg Grunberg being the most obvious one he was a supporting cast member throughout the shows run, and Jennifer Garner played the ex-girlfriend of one of Felicity's on-again-off-again love interests.

Felicity is on the WE network at 1pm and 2pm weekdays if you want to see it Tony.

Naib,

well I still have never seen Felicity...must of got them confused. I should watch it to be an 'abrams completist'. Maybe I can find a Felicity fanatic to write a 'what can we learn from Felicity' article. But the point was, he likes to write for women....and Trek XI should have a good female character or two IMHO. I think Kirk needs to have some kind of romance and then have to choose Starfleet over love...sacrifice always makes good drama. Maybe the pain of the loss is what turned him into the 'love em or leave me' guy we see on ST:TOS

I've got to say, this was a surprisingly well-researched article, and had some excellent points. Everyone loves to pick apart the shows to find all those wonderful little references.

Keri Russel played the briefly scene female agent that Hunt trained on MI:3, not his wife. Michelle Monaghan, who was not on Felicity played his wife.. ;-)

But that's neither here not there. Anyways, I hope the new Trek movie will even begin to approach the level of quality seen in the first couple seasons of Alias. It was really good in those seasons, still it was pretty good in the later ones.

One thing: I believe SD-6 doesn’t have much to do with Section 31 from our beloved Star Trek, but much more with Section 1(very similar name wouldn’t you say?) from TV show Nikita which shares a lot of similarities with Alias.

I am in total agreement with JJ at the helm of the new Star Trek movie however, there are two points of consider if the franchise is to survive.

First, I was introduced to Alias from a friend and watched the show only on DVD, currently waiting for season 5. I was amazed by the storyteller and pacing of the show. While the chasing Rimbaldi artifacts and the different factions that SD6 and the CIA encountered was at times confusing nonetheless I still enjoyed Alias’ spy-fi adventures.

During the Alias production, JJ started Lost, which I haven't seen, but know of its popularity. Having said this, there was focus more on Lost than Alias and I could see the lack of JJ in show especially season 4. On Lost, JJ was also involved in writing for Marvel according to a podcast I heard. My concern is that JJ has to stay focus on the project at hand. I know his is more than capable to do the job and was the only reason why I went to see MI:III but if JJ is not there the project will suffer. On a side note, MI:III was basically Alias on the big screen without Rimbaldi and it was excellent.

Second, Star Trek is an enduring franchise but the last several movies and TV series have many wondering if the series truly dead. As Spock often speaks of, "There are always possibilities," and with this notion the series will survive. However, what has to change? While I like the idea to see a young Kirk and Spock as a feature film, is this the right course of action?

I remembered before Enterprise was cancelled Bryce Zabel Dark Skies producer and Babylon 5 producer J. Michael Straczynski wrote a treatment to re-boot the series with the Kirk, Spock and McCoy. While many fans may believe this is the wrong approach, I would say this is the smartest move yet to do something new and yet have characters still be familiar to fans. Examples would be James Bond which several actors portrayed the lead as well as update the storyline with the times. Marvel rebooted the Avengers series with the Ultimates and other similar titles received the same treatment. Even the Original Star Trek got a facelift with new and improved effects. So, why can there be a new series or direction without having to rely of what has been done before?

I have always been a stickler to the history of Star Trek but I lost my faith when Enterprise introduced the Ferengi without ever mentioning their name or having the Borg appear without further mention until ST: TNG. If you are not going to keep within the rules then start from scratch. Don't insult the fans with loopholes because in the end they will not support any endeavor.

Going back to JJ and the proposed idea of young Kirk and Spock may sound appealing but JJ needs do one of two things. He can be bold and take Star Trek in a new direction and start from scratch or play within with what has already been established. I opted for the former because I believe the franchise can survive the proverbial reboot. If JJ looks at the treatment and gears the movie in that direction, I can't wait to see what JJ can bring to Star Trek.

Shatner did say he liked to 'play captain janeway' in the new legacy game...so you never know

on the topic of the feature. one thing that Alias shows is that the Abrams teams likes to wrap their dramas with a lot of romance and of course strong (and totally hot) female characters. I think that Star Trek XI may end up with a character like that. In MI3 Abrams gave Ethan Hunt a wife (who had starred in Abrams 'Felicity')...so maybe it is Jen Garner's turn for STXI??? Love interest for Kirk? for Spock???
