Has anyone here ever read the Horatio Hornblower books that Roddenberry cited as an influence, i.e., "Hornblower in space"?

And the even more literate, but yes, not easy reading Aubrey Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian -- I understand there are Trek fans who enjoy both works.

My point is that such writing would have been great for any potential movie. Now, Peter Weir, who at least was faithful to the spirit of O'Brian in his film "Master and Commander" -- now he would have been a great choice to direct!

http://www.meridianmagazine.com/bestbooks/010118obrian.html

Conclusion: if the movie doesn't work, there are always great books. And of course the "remastered" original series...

Wow praise for STV?? Who would of thought it!

Star Trek has not lost its "fan base". So this idea of finding a "way to open Trek up to an entire new generation" is nonsense. Everything in life has its ups and downs. Does everyone think that people over 15 don't watch TV? Getting rid of 40 years of Trek to do some revamp is not only laughable but incredible dumb. Shall we redo Star Wars with a short black girl wearing a white costume in a white vail? Instead of what has been known for almost 30 years in order to make a some number of people who are never happy with anything....happy?

Bring back Shatner as Kirk!

"Fortune favors fools, small children and
starships named Enterprise."

Dstutz... I like that quote and have since Riker said it. Thanks for bringing it up again.

Good or bad, the Star Trek universe will survive for the people who enjoy the stories, the lessons learned and the humor.
Think about how big this one creative thought has become. Star Trek is in our language and in our inspired thoughts toward new technology. Five TV series, 11 movies, an animated series, novels, short stories, webisodes. And it's not slowing down.

My point is... I want the movie to be all our hopes for a really GOOD Trek... but even if it's not... I insist that the magic never went away.

Give me that old haunting theme piped in over a slowly moving starfield and I know I'll get a chill up my spine...

#16 Bob,

I am afraid I cannto accept your judgment of Enterprise as an analogue to TOS. I found the acting to be over-the-top (every alien sounded like some goof from WWF!) and unrealistic (prancing about with weapons drawn in a manner that proves no one on the set ever handled a real firearm in their lives...)

And the stories were so farcical I couldn't stand to watch! I mean, entire seasons were dedicated to made-up problems about made-up races with made-up physics and made-up ethics. TOS, as Jim and Dom point out, really was about the *American* United States Ship Enterprise and her American crew, veterans of WWII. This is because the entire company were themselves WWII or Korea veterans and knew what it was like to kill-or-be-killed!

And to the others who have commented on the involvement of Roddenberry: it is a business school truism that most entrepreneurs hold on to the daily management of their companies far too long, often destroying them through their incompetence. The wise entrepreneur knows when it's time to hand his creation to another. Roddenberry never did understand this, although Desilu did.

I like the idea of a new movie. The remastered TOS is great.
Not since TNG have I felt this passionate about something
old and new. Fortune favors fools, small children and
starships named Enterprise. Its a great time to be alive.
