Instead of an asteroid the people live inside a giant cylinder which spins about one end in order to generate artificial gravity along the length. Heinlein also wrote a sequel, which I haven't read, that chronicles their arrival at the destination planet. I think its fairly obvious that it is, for a number of reasons. But I don't agree that the whole season can be written off as garbage compared to the first two. There are many very entertaining episodes and some wonderful character moments, particularly for McCoy.
