It was never Kirk & Spock. It was Kirk, Spock & McCoy. Would the character interaction work as well with just the two of them? I’m not sure.

I have said a couple times that I don’t want to be anywhere close to any of you when I see the flick. (Definently not in Kentucky, now…)
But I’ve changed my mind. It may be hilarious to watch some of you fidget, roll your eyes and groan at the parts of this movie you dislike.

I’d just as soon have Trek XI reference none of the post-TOS series at all, but I don’t feel any urge to threaten to bombard my local cinema with antimatter warheads over it. In the last few years, the LotR movies, the Spider-Man movies, Harry Potter, and “Batman Begins” have hopefully shown Hollywood that audiences have the attention span to let two-and-a-half or three-hour movies score big box office. If it takes 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 hours to do Trek XI with a good story and good characterization, then I want them to make the movie with that kind of running time. Heck, “Batman Begins” not only runs two and a half hours, it spends more than an hour before you even see the title character in costume, and I hardly felt that the time was badly spent.

I sincerely hope that no actor in this movie feels obligated or is encouraged to do impressions. Obviously we don’t want blatantly inappropriate decisions like Spock grinning broadly at every turn. But I think few viewers (including those who now complain about the prospect of any recasting at all) are going to be happy at actors doing Shater-as-Kirk or Nimoy-as-Spock impersonations. It won’t seem natural and it won’t do Trek any favors in the longer term.

Actually, I would say that the best humor in a Trek movie was STII: it was gentle, it worked with the characters and it didn’t slap the audience in the face to say “hey, that was a JOKE just then!”
