I agree with everyone above, I like the colored tail running lights below the shuttlebay. Why aren't we seeing these on more often?

The original ameoba was more convincing, they should have kept the look more fathful:

The 1701 really looks like a CGI model in those shots, they could have done a better rendering job, look at the new Battlestar Galactica or the old Firefly series for competent 3D modelling and rendering.

#23 Neal
Sorry Neal, but I myself absolutely always LOVED Star Trek's shots of the "E" from above and directly behind (and don't recall many comments saying it's the least photogenic angle either), which sometimes gave a menacing viewpoint of the "mysterious obstacle of the week", like the example seen in the TOP photo above does. In fact, I actually prefer a CLOSER IN shot of this angle which gives us a BETTER look at the top of the "saucer" with it's blinking red and green lights. Surely this imaginatively designed Starship looks great from ALL angles? I hope that CBS-D continue to give us as many varied angles as possible (while keeping some ALREADY excellently "composed" iconic ones!) in the future, as too many "shot from BELOW" angles would become VERY boring and unimaginative to this viewer...
However, I absolutely agree with your point that the team are missing out on great opportunities for long shots of "encountered menaces", such as "The Doomsday Machine", which could have shown us the far smaller scale of the "E" to these overpowering objects.

#35 CommadorZ
These lights DO indeed seem to come and go inconsistantly as #31 Tom pointed out, and if you go back to some of the side by side video comparisons done previously here, you will see how much they are MISSED. To me, as someone who sorely misses nicely photographed actual Miniatures (or even "Bigatures" as Peter Jackson's "Weta" effects team calls some of the ones they thankfully still use for certain scenes), the LACK of some of the vibrant, blinking or otherwise, coloured lights seen on the original Model in most of it's shots, is one of the details that is making some of the new "E" CGI shots look inferior. Bring 'em ALL back, and make them stand out as much as the originals did for VISUAL, dramatic effect!... Please?

I've been one of those guys generally supporting the work of CBS-D, (except for the recent Tholian ships) but those two shots of the E as it was about to penetrate looked like crap.
It was like something out of Tron.
I'd give this week's effort a B-.
The best effect was the E in total darkness. THAT was cool- AND it worked.

Kudos on this one, and from somebody who usually prefers the untouched show. I still like the original amoeba, but the new one was very good. What stood out here was the first ship shot-- very nice. And the shot of the ship entering the amoeba was spectacular and looked very much like what they would have done at the time. Also, the "lava-lamp" viewscreen shot looked very good and fit the show's style. Yes, the movement of the ship was kind of awkward when they went in; maybe the left to right bow shot could have just gone on longer. The directing of the changes is better and many of the new FX are matching the show's aesthetic. That makes STR an enjoyable experience for me and a worthy addition to the original episodes. I will save this tape. Nice work.

I wondered if the new amoeba would hold up against the superb original effect, and it did. They truly improved the realism of traveling through the amoeba with the excellent aforementioned shot of protoplasm striking the dorsal, the ship in darkness shots looked much better than the original ones, the shuttlecraft looked great as usual, etc.

But what stood out most to me was not the fancy later shots, but how the early space normal shots looked so close in style to great 3rd-season ship shots, but with proper color, beautifully clear ship rendering, and subtle camera moves that enhance the old shots without breaking the style.

They have really got the ship shots down at this point, showing strong improvement over the early remasters. I wish they had held off on Balance of Terror, one of my favorites, until later in the remastering but such is life.

As for the denigrated ship wobbles upon penetration, remember that the crew was being flung about like crazy, so the ship had to be acting pretty strange. Kirk was enjoying the carnival ride in his rotating captain's chair while the rest of the bridge crew was probably cursing him for not ordering those new Bose turbulence-canceling inertial dampers.

92-Have you ever noticed how good that ship looks in ..."Mirror, Darkly"? It really was well done on short notice. However, in "Trails and Tribblelations" the nacelles look all wrong to me. Perhaps CBS-D's inspirations with their first Enterprise model? lol

Geez, I said the "n word" again.

How sweet it is to see those red impulse engines LIT UP! Thanks, guys!

But how about taking another step? See the Defiant from "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II": At warp, the impulse engines are a "cooled down" blue color, not "black" as if they're completely off.

I think you guys should do the same for Enterprise in the Remastered Series: When not in use, color the impulse engines blue! Please!

I'll fall in line with Scott and other posters above about the jerky penetration shot, but overall thought this was one of CBS-D's best efforts. I'd have liked an entrance shot that really showed the surface of the amoeba as the E entered it, but once inside, I thought the effects were top-notch and very convincing. Lots of "pause and rewind" moments in this one!
