I guess Mark A(nnoying) Altman never saw classic TNG episodes like "Deja Q" or "Fistful of Datas" if he thinks TNG was never funny.
Oh, that's right, he despises TNG now because it had the audacity to kill his god Kirk in the 1st TNG film.
GET THE HELL OVER IT MARK! Shatner will never play Kirk again. Hell, even he has accepted that(if his recent Emmy wins are any indication).
So, just accept the fact that TNG is a bona fide TV classic and forget the less than inspired movies that came out of it.

Ok - a bit off topic but sufficiently worthwhile: an outgoing cell phone voice mail greeting in Spock's voice, “There are no life forms present to answer your call.” What's cool about it is that I only play it for a few of my closest friends based on their CALLER ID.

IMO - one of the reasons for the bum scene in 'City' was to remove the phaser from a deranged McCoy. Can you imagine the havoc he could have wreaked before Kirk and Spock could get to him? Talk about divergent time lines . . .

I don't like the CGI Enterprise. Although I don't agree it looks like a cartoon, it does lack a certain spark of realism.

Who is this Altman guy??? He's right on!!! There is intelligent life in the Star Trek universe, not just lap dogs willing and eager to slurp up any incarnation or new twist of a science fiction classic.

I think some of the matte paintings and planet shots have been incredible. To the point where I've enjoyed a lot of the CGI stuff. Some of the effects in Space Seed were great. But overall, ship exterior shots go from looking like cartoon imagery to brooding video game screen shots to Alan Dean Foster-looking book cover artwork. There's no way to re-create the 3-D qualities of a real model. Plus you lose the graniness and "feel" of film to the cold metal sheen and paneling effects of the new starship. (eg: the ruined Romulan Bird-of-Prey)

Doomsday Machine was indeed a disaster, and the final point where I stopped lapping up the revamped episodes and proverbially allowed Dr. McCoy to reconnect my brain. The crayola cartoonists effectively scribbled out the laws of physics to allow the Enterprise to swoop, arc and sway through the time/space continuum as it battled the planet killer. Total cheese. (I would be embarassed to show this kind of stuff to the many of friends I preach original Trek to [who have never really seen the original]). This should be completely insulting to a thinking version of a Star Trek fan, and anyone who enjoys even mediocre special effects. It is where I started to take things personally. Did you see the shuttlecraft take off from the hanger bay and then pitch and roll basically before it even clears the doors? For crying out loud! I would expect more from a Buck Rogers scene or a run-away Ming ship.

For any of you who are having a hard time processing all this, or contemplating a web-based version of whoop-ass, I will say this:

I don't care what kind of computer you have, or how much money you have, whether it's the stone age or the space age...you just can't manufacure charm. And TOS is full of it. As much as I think it's cool they're attempting to recreate some of this stuff...the best I can do is wish them luck the rest of the way.

I have long thought that one of Oxmyx's guys looked like Kent McCord (Reed from Adam-12). In the opening scene, he's the 2nd guy with Kalo. He wears a hat with a blueish color and has no speaking lines, and is shortly out of the story thanks to Krako's drive-by. I didn't see his name in the credits though. Can anyone confirm this?

Just in case anyone missed the sarcasm dripping from the above post, I think the ship looks lovelier than I've ever seen it. They are doing a good job of balancing between creating somethine new to update the series without it being so flashy it clashes and looks out of place.

The CGI Enterprise in this episode is so bad...

...that my five year old could do better with an Etch-A-Sketch.

...I could do better videotaping my old AMT model hung with strings against a black posterboad with stars painted on it.

...that I prefer the old animated series ship over these new shots.

yaddayaddayadda... there, I've said it for you, save your typing energy and go get a job, then work long enough to buy a clue.
