I’m cautiously optimistic about the new movie and this interview gives me more reasons to be optimistic. Of course, they could be a bunch of lies, but I don’t think so. I’m especially happy about the comment about filling in gaps. It would also be cool if a post-Generations Kirk (having been revived a la The Return) will be in the movie reminiscing about old times with Spock.

Either Kirk,Spock and McCoy are ‘classic’ characters or they aint.
If like Shakespeares work they are classic, then they should be able to be re-interpreted by many different actors, in many different styles.

If the characters are not ‘robust’ enough to be open for new talent to portray, then they should be left alone, for ever linked to the actors who co-created them.

I would like to think that the characters are strong enough to stand alone, without for ever being tied to one actors interpretation.

We shall see

“Some kind of Kirk…” sounds a lot more like there won’t be a character named “Kirk” in the movie at all, but a character that fills the same sort of leadership position. After that comment, I wouldn’t expect any known characters in the movie at all, except possibly for cameos.
