People, please. To all those that believe Frakes could've saved Nemesis, you're seriously misguided. As it was written, nothing could've polished that turd. The fault for its failure falls squarely on Logan and everyone who were in on the concept of "paying homage" to TWOK. Frakes at best would've been more capable of paying attention to canon and getting the little details right. Does anyone remember Insurrection? While it's not the worst film ever made, it's no masterpiece. Conversely, to put all the blame on Baird is just plain wrong. He's an excellent editor, and if anyone here has seen Executive Decision you know that it was a decent, taut thriller. Just because a writer or producer isn't a fan or isn't familiar with the material doesn't mean that they're incapable of producing a good film. And as proof, just look at TWOK. Before they were hired to create TWOK, neither Harve Bennet nor Nick Meyer barely had a clue as to what the hell Star Trek was, let alone were familiar with the lore and established canon, yet to most people they produced and directed the greatest Trek film.

Rhett Coates has nailed it

the entire film is about Kirk\'s first mission...which is to find the rare paint for the bridge railings. He and Spock will search all the Home Depots in the galaxy to find the exact matching paint. They will face many perils from surly clerks to not having the exact change. Act II will focus on the actual painting of the bridge railing and all the trials that entails. And of course the final act will just be 45 minutes of watching the paint dry

...but in the end all purists should be happy because they got their red railings, but of course they will not because they will note how the color is exactly right as it was viewed on the original Zenith Spacemaster TV set circa 1965...they will demand the heads of JJ Abrams and all the studio heads and when those are not forthcoming will hold a protest where they paint themselves red in front of the Chinese theater. But they will get upstaged by the other protest of those protesting the nacelle caps as they immolate themslves using pyrotechnics with the exact right matching colors.

Cervantes wrote: …”the 40 year history provided a ’sort of guard rail’ for what they could or could not do.” … But will that be a RED guard rail or not?…

I am getting the distinct impression that if this film follows what has been SEEN on film, we will likely see the PAINTING of bridge rails in Safety Red, as this apparently takes place when Kirk was a cadet (presuming the rumors hold true in some form). Look back at THE CAGE (cut into the 2-part TOS episode THE MENAGERIE. The bridge of the NCC-1701 was rather drab gray, very similar to the Enterprise NX-01 in ST:Enterprise. The bridge railings were not gray yet, but had been re-painted by the time Kirk took the ship across the galactic barrier to find out what happened to the SS Valiant ("Where No Man Has Gone Before", the second pilot episode that sold NBC on green-lighting the show to Desilu).

We may see gray railings on ships at the beginning of the movie, and red railings at the end of it. Maybe being painted with some wild, futuristic spray paint device (that someone might be speculating on and that Paramount's research department for 'Trek looked into). Maybe.

I'm really looking forward to this!

One story I would like to see, that I think would be worthy of a motion picture, would be the origin of the Prime Directive. It's something that "Enterprise" should have covered, but didn't. What colossal f**k-up did the young Federation inflict on some unsuspecting society by interfering, that non-interference should then become its most important principle? That would be an epic story, grounded in Star Trek lore, that has not been told in the visual media, and would be something greater in scope than a glorified TV episode. But setting the movie in the Kirk-era is probably too late to tell this story. (I'm sure *a* story is told in one of the books out there - maybe even a Kirk-era book - but it's unlikely the majority of movie-goers would know or care)

to me the magic of TOS was its ability to amaze people with things (behaviours, technology etc) that they never dreamed of. That's why each spinoff went one step down imho. There were nothing exciting or even surprising left when Voyager came out. So, to revitalize the franchise or to go with new series (i hope they do that too) they have to come up with something(s) big and surprising. Else, we may see a good movie but not the shockwave which the franchise needed so badly.

#33 Anthony

Thanks...I try.... :D

Reboot, restart, rejuvination,rehash,whatever... one of the biggest areas I am interested to know about is will it be an over REDESIGN? Taking for granted for a moment that the story and script and acting will be fine...I wonder what the "look" of this Movie will end up like. Will this "TOS era" Movie really look somewhat like the TOS series did, or will many areas be given a radical makeover? The TOS series has some excellent production design and I hope that J.J. and his production designers don't depart TOO far from some of it's iconic, colourful imagery. Personally, I'm NOT demanding bright red Bridge rails, ( but equally would take them if offered, and yes I know they weren't originally red in the beginning ) for this thing to honour the original source, but hope that the imagery isn't OVERLY changed from the TOS designs and vibrancy. If we don't get the same colours of everything, fine, as long as we get a colourful "look", reflecting what remains the most colourful television series in history.
