They didn't update the FX enough, the little FX that they did do only pleases the old fans,it won't make any new fans from the lack of FX.You wouldn't be changing the stories by updating the FX,how does it change the story if Kirk actually fights a cool looking lizard creature instead of a guy in a horrible lizard costume, how does it change the story if the phasers actually look like a weapon of the future?

Great re-master... I wish they would clean up the sphere shots. You can still see the shadows of the light bulbs in the spheres.

I wouldn't disrespect the folks at CBS Digital too harshly. I think they've done an admirable job for a task that they had almost no time to prepare for (I've heard that Balance of Terror was only given a month to be worked on before it aired; likely due to the 'surprise' nature of this whole project). Any shortcomings in this project can almost surely be lain at the door of Paramount/Viacom/whatever they're called nowadays for not planning or budgeting this properly.

That being said, I like the conservative approach that's been taken by these guys. Yes, it's sort of a copout and a bit overconservative by my estimate, but I'll take this over some Star Wars-esque 'Special Edition'-ing of the series. If they overcompensated to avoid the backlash that 'remastering' caused, then I think it's entirely understandable. And the HD transfers, FX aside, have been more than worth the effort, IMHO. It's nice that we'll soon have true, DVD quality video of this series as opposed to something that looked like it was transferred off of a video master, like the original DVD release was.

Of course, this at least paves the way for future projects of this sort. A further remastering of TOS at a far future date, perhaps. Of course, another decade or two of CGI evolution could yield all manner of amazing ideas.

Personally, though, I'll be waiting and hoping for a TNG remastering. In some ways, that series needed it more than TOS did.

The title shot with the Enterprise passing by and into orbit was absulutely incredible. I think I have watched it about 20 times on tivo. That was one of the best shots of the ship yet. Awsome! Yes, ending shot of the E leaving was cool too. The ship keep looking better!

"so the zappy attack of McCoy in sickbay was unchanged?"

They added some purplish energy between the "flame walls." A bit disappointing since those energy flames still look like... well... bits of fabric blown by a fan. I was hoping they might make the flames looks better. It wouldn't have taken that long to add a bit of a corona and some swirly bits to to the flame tips. That's what I was imagining they'd do.

The CBS Digital have indeed done some VERY nice work in places, however it wouldn't have needed prohibitavely time consuming and costly effort to redo many backgrounds and sets. Rock sets left as they are, but with the odd "cloud swirl" or "moon" or "flying critter" here and there would have added immensely to the livelyness of this project.
The subject of original film stock has been raised numerous times in the past, and it SEEMS that CBS Digital are stuck with elements that had already got the old handphaser beams on them. However, any time that the team has ADDED some kind of enhancement to certain ones, it has been a big improvement, but they just haven't CONSISTANTLY added to them, thus leaving an eneven feel to the project. Just my opinion.

I think the Enterprise and the planet shots in this episode are the best i've seen of the new FX. The planet in particular is impressive. They seem to have gotten the atmosphere ring just right.

I must admit that the editing is quite skillful in keeping the essential story lines in tact. One of the bad edits that comes to mind was in "The Omega Glory". Tracy orders Kirk out of the makeshift lab and they immediately cut to Kirk punching him. That was a little too severe.

Still, I am patiently waiting for the full episodes to be released on DVD (and moreover reasonably priced...)
