Sam Rockwell, who played the quintesential ‘red shirt’ Guy Fleegman in the Trek parody "Galaxy Quest" wants to have a big upgrade. The actor tells MTV "I would love to play Captain Kirk. That’s a great part,…Great costumes! I would love to be a William Shatner reincarnation,” [But] I don’t know if I could copy Bill Shatner. I mean, he’s just too genius. I don’t know if I could copy that cadence.” That doesn’t stop him. MTV also have a video where Rockwell shows off his best Shatner Impersonation. He also has some suggestions for who should play Sulu, Spock, and Uhura. Go to MTV to see it.

Sam Rockwell is a superb actor and would probably be as good a choice, as any, for the iconic role of Kirk. Ignore the baggage of Galaxy Quest and let talent prevail!

Rockwell is a solid actor and will bring us many good movies. I think he was only half-serious about playing Kirk, but we’re so starved for news, we’ll treat it as legit.

Do you guys even know who Sam Rockwell is? The first few comments indicate that the posters are completely oblivious… as if his appearance NOW has anything to do with what he could look like for the role. Go watch Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Rockwell is a BRILLIANT actor and a muuuuuch better choice than Matt Damon, who despite the Bourne movies, STILL looks like a wimp.

I really don’t think these folks know who Rockwell is, or what he is truly capable of. My first run in with him was in ‘The Green Mile’, he was disgusting in that..in a good way. :) He played a good guy…who was really the bad guy in the first Charlie’s Angels…of course, Galaxy Quest, Matchstick Men…the guy is just a superb actor. He could pull of playing a hero like Kirk in his sleep.

I think a unknown is only way to go. They are better off spending the money on the special effects for the action sequences. .

3rd Season Kirk was noticably different to 1st and 2nd season Kirk – he was beefier with thicker, darker hair – in fact looking more like The Motion Picture Kirk…
I guess if Trek had contined for a 4th and 5th season kirk would have had longer hair and looked like Shatner during his Columbo/Singing years

Could it be a Brit? By all that’s holy, I sure hope not! I’m a Scottish Brit myself, but if some young whippersnapper has to emulate the Shat, then let it be another CANADIAN say I, and an UNKNOWN one at that. Kirk is too good a starmaking role to waste on some reasonably known actor who just happens to have a bit of space in his schedule.
