I think in this case fading the ship in and out would have worked much better. Yes, the original effect wasn't spectacular, but I don't think the intention was to show a "ship" necessarily even though they mention one--these are incorporeal beings and their ship oriiginally was just a hazy suggestion of something. It makes the Thasians seem far less mysterious.

#33: "I thought that WAS the old one."

(Yeah, I'm responding to my own post.)

I went back and checked the original version, and I see that the Thasian ship wasn't really a ship at all. It was just a faded green blob. So, while the new Thasian ship isn't anything to get excited about, I still think it looks loads better than the original. I'm not liking how it moves, though. It would have looked better if it zoomed into the distance, like when ships are shown going to warp (on the other Trek shows). But, whatever. Maybe CBS Digital doesn't know how to do that effect.

I'm still a little dumbfounded by the new Tholian ship...I'm willing to give the CBSD crew the benefit of the doubt on most of these because you can usually argue that the new shots are at least AS effective as the originals, at worst unrealistic in a different way, at best big improvements. But this is a rare case (and in an episode where all sorts of beautifully subtle enhancements were done) where the new effect dramatically HURTS one of the best scenes ever done for the original series. You can't focus on the drama because you can't help wondering what in hell that green thing is DOING. The design IS interesting but the movement...wow. Fred Steiner's scoring of that scene (and the whole episode) is one of the highlights of year one, and his use of a bell for the disappearance of the Thasian ship worked dramatic wonders and was timed beautifully with the effect (or vice versa!), but now it sounds as that green slide is pulled away by unseen fingers on the viewer...

Here is a positive post for this weeks Charlie X's redo. The shots of the big "E" were fantastic. These were much improved over previous efforts. The only problem is the end of the nacelles still look a little to CGIish. It is hard to imagine what this thing would really lool like out in space, but you guys have done a splendid job. Make you get eight hours of sleep.

I watched it last night. I have to echo most of the posters. The syndication edits were terrible. The Thasian "ship" was laughably bad and no improvement over the 60's blob. Robert Walker Jr. gave probably the most memorable guest performance in all of TOS - perhaps all of Trek.

Mini Rant:
There are probable a couple dozen really good jumping off points for great sequels in TOS and I find it heartbreaking they were ignored by future Treks. Following up Khan in TWOK was genius but what would Charlie have been like as an adult? Would the gangsters of Iotia really come looking of a piece of the "Feds" action? How are the gladiators of Triskelion doing since Kirk "liberated" them?

TNG was really a complete reboot disguised as a continuation. In GR's original bible the Klingons/Romulans/Vulcans etc were passé and were not to be mentioned. DS9 was trying to define it's own turf and was largely successful because it mined TNG. Voyager - meh. Enterprise stank for 3 years until they started to tie it into TOS continuity.

I would really enjoy a Trek production that builds on TOS and has the same Action/Adventure format as TOS. Maybe the new film will have some of that spirit, but I reserve judgment.
