I'm a year late in watching this episode, but I noticed a subtle but really well-done effects update. The effect of Charlie disintegrating the security guard's phaser has been re-done. The effect has been smoothed out perfectly. Looks like they took the frames after the original transition (after the guard's hand is empty) and inserted a new phaser with a new 60s-style disintegration effect. I'd say that's a credit to CBS-D that nobody noticed.

After watching this episode, I could only wonder whether or not the Thasians knew anything about human behavior and whether or not they tried to teach Charlie anything about what is and what is not appropriate and acceptable behavior in "normal" human society.

I understood Charlie's anger and frustration, being in a strange environment, not knowing how to behave and not knowing which questions to ask - and going through puberty makes it more difficult - but he killed 20 people on the Antares, made people on the Enterprise "go away" and even "disrupted" anyone and anything he didn't like!

I was RELIEVED that Captain Kirk was smart enough to listen to the Thasian who told him that Charlie's powers and temper made him "too dangerous" to live amongst humans. I, myself, would have done the same thing!

55. KT - July 18, 2007

We could speculate that there is some regulation governing proximity...maybe to promote the use of the transporter. It might, however, have more to do with the "small" screen, to insure both ships are framed in the shot.

We can assume that the Antares is a Starfleet ship...if not Starfleet merchant marine. That might explain the older uniforms.

This is always going to be one of the episodes that makes Trek what it is in all of our hearts.

Even as a kid, I could remember identifying with Charlie's redolence. I imagined what I would do if I had unlimited power and no way to check my behaviour. Would I use my powers to benefit others or just myself? I hoped that I would excercise my desire to do good and thus came a lesson learned directly from the show. I was young, but I knew that what Charlie did was wrong. At the same time I felt compassion for him because he was left without his checks and balances to give him a moral center. I remember how haunted I was by his voice echoing as the Thasians took him away. And don't get me started about the nightmares that came from the girl whose face he erased. All in all, wonderful images and memories.

#54... it also showed a nice contrast between the way that Spock handled the teasing by Uhura and the way Charlie couldn't.

The CGI Antares was cool, but it always strikes me as unrealistic to see any other ship in such close physical proximity to the Enterprise. The image isn't unrealistic...the concept is. Why would any ship need to snuggle up alongside a starship in that manner?

I'm with you. I missed the "devil ears and devil eyes" song. It was a nice character moment.

I for one enjoyed every micro-second of Uhura's singing and hated the cuts for syndication they made of it. For me the highlight of "Conscience of the King" was Uhura's singing in it.

Love all the ideas about the fleet back in the day. Would've loved to see a retroTrek show that exanded on this era or one right around then. The Dreadnought was always something I wanted to see as well, but wasn't that a Franz Joseph thing? There's a big debate as to that being canon. Not only could a revisit allow more ship-space stuff but you could show things like Mr Arex from TAS as CGI or more imaginative species.

Chalie X had TOS' own "old model" on display, as you can see from the deflector and the nacelles. To me, I always cringed when "another space shot" came along, and I"m glad for the repacements that were needed even back then (all right, so I'm a pilot model hater, you got me). Generally the only time the pilot E worked was in the pilots, which were different in many ways from the series, and "Mirror, Mirror", where there was motivation. So I'm always glad to see those shots get replaced (there's a couple in next week's "Squire of Gothos") at least Charlie X uses(ed) it consistently.

CBS-D did a great job on the Antares, as many have said. A departure shot would've been nice. God the colors are gorgeous! I remember being irritated at them for their lack of verisimilitude when I was young (the eyes masks, which I love now, were particularly galling then. Oh and silk screen for the women, I hated that, heh.), funny how that changes.

The Thasian ship is another area of agreement: cool "ship", lousy animation. It seems to be governed by an offscreen anchor; I feel like I can "see the man behind the curtain" with little dramatic effect. I see what they're trying to do, kind of like the ship is a lens flare that comes in like a ray of light, but it's clumy and feels like a rush job. I hope this sort of thing isn't creeping into the coming DVD set as they get the other Season One stuff done for release.
On balance I feel like the E is really solid now, with the lighting, texture and scale all singing along, and god knows the remaster is gorgeous, so I'm hopeful the coming surprises will be mostly of the good variety.

Can't wait for week after next! "This Side of Paradise" was always one of my three favorite episodes, with everyone being insolent to Kirk - particularly Mr Leslie, LoL!
Quote haters run!

"Jim boy, j'ah eva have a real, cold, Georgia-style mint julep?"
"Yes, I see now. We can't evacuate the colony, it'd be wrong!"
"Does she know what she's getting Spock!?!"
"I didn't want to, Jim"
"I... can't.... LEAVE!"
"You couldn't pronounce it."

Okay, I'm stopping. I still can't believe that love music was made for Ruth in "Shore Leave"; for me it will always be the "Spores Love Theme."
