yep, we'll have to agree to disagree on this..and I agree with Stanky, please no remakes of "Green Acres". The Beverly HIllbillies film was a huge misfire, just underscoring the dangers of remaking a beloved classic . The move was terrible miscast. Let's hope STar trek 08 fares much better.

Cedric the Entertainer as Oliver Wendell Douglas and Paris Hilton as Lisa Douglas. I bet someone's already got it in the works!

Green Acres is one of the few shows I like as much as Star Trek.

I hope they don't try to make a recast version of that.

"Green Acres," "Petticoat Junction" and "The Beverly Hillbillies" do occur in the same universe. Hooterville, Pixly and the rest occur in the same reality.

You are really stretching...I suspect this disucssion is at an end.

Those examples simply underline the fact that they all take place in the same fictional universe, not unlike "Happy Days" and "Mork and MIndy" or "The Beverly Hillbillies", "Pettycoat Junction" and "Green Acres".

Can, or should, "The GIrl from U.N.C.L.E." be called "The Man from U.N.C.L.E" because it has some of the same co-stars and gadgets as "Man fom U.N.C.L.E."? What if Robert Vaugh shows up in an episode? Does that connection turn it into "The Man from U.N.C.L.E"?

Of course not and "Star Trek" is no different.

Cross promotion between the various spin-offs is common and somewhat expected because they do exist in the same fictional universe. But just because all the Trek series operate in the same fictional universe doesn't entitle them all to be called "Star Trek" any more than "CSI" can be called "CSI: Miami" because David Caurso makes a guest appearance or "The Beverly HIllbillies" be can be labeled "Green Acres" just because Granny took a trip to Hooterville and has a crush on Sam Drucker.

66. jonboc - July 22, 2007

That would fly if the series were not connected. In TNG there was reference to TOS and TOS Movie Era ships and types were seen Including The USS Bozeman and USS Enterprise-C which used constumes form the TOS movie era. Also, in Naked Now they Original Enterprise was seen as a graphic and James T. Kirk was mentioned.

Spock and Serek came out, along with Dr. McCoy, reprising their TOS roles. Let's not forget Scotty in "Relics" and the reconstructed TOS bridge.

In DS9, they actually went back in time to a TOS episode and INTERACTED.

VOY episodes, like "Flashback" we saw Sulu and the Excelsior.

Then in ENT the USS Defiant came out a TOS ship from their alternate "Future." Also a host of Characters, like Zephram Cochran and Data's "acestor."

All these show existing in the same "existance" and frame of reality. The same way you and I exist in the same "frame of reality" as Nazi Germany, The Seven Year's War, Ancient Egypt and the 1960s.

I am beging to believe that people have allowed themselves to become so enthralled with "what is wrong with that OTHER series" they have become blinded and are therefore ignorant of the other series.

It's all the same...different times.

CSI is not a parallel to Star Trek and to make that claim is a specious argument.

#64 -
By that rationale, shows like CSIL Miami and CSI: New York are all CSI. Sorry, I just can't lump them all together like that as they are all completely different shows.
When I say I can't stand CSI: Miami, it has no relation to CSI, which I happen to like very much. Same with STar Trek, despite what's in the title, the spin -offs are not all STar Trek...it's just more convenient for people to refer to them as that.

Being a DC fanboy first and a Star Trek fan second, I've been loving these new IDW books. I also like that Tischman has been trying to unify the universe.

The stories are generally strong, and Star Trek was seemingly made for the comic book format.

Great stuff.

63. jonboc - July 21, 2007

Those series you mentioned...the Norman Lear and Jerry Paris ones...occur in basically the same continuity. But they did not have names like... "Happy Days: Beer Factory Girls" or "All in the Family: African American Dry Cleaner," but we did have "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Star Trek: Voyager" and yes, even after they tried it with out it a while "Star Trek: Enterprise."

Star Trek includes all this.

I even enjoy "The Great Gildersleeve" as part of "Fibber McGee and Molly."

For all that like to acknowledge all the post-TOS series as being "Star Trek", do you also like "Happy Days" with Penny Marshall and CIndy WIlliams?. Or would you rather watch "Happy Days" with Robin WIlliams as that zany Mork? And whats your favorite "All in the Family" series? The one with George Jefferson or the one with Maude?

Me, I prefer "All in the Family" with Carrol O'Connor, "Happy Days" with Henry Winker and "Star Trek" with WIlliam Shatner....but that's just me.
