My two cents' worth: this has to be an AFFORDABLE cast, folks.
CAST LIST (with a few alternates listed ) - taken from here, my own ideas & other places

Kirk: Eric Johnson (SciFi's Flash Gordon), Jensen Ackles, or Shane West (ER) - forget about looking like Shatner, gotta bring the ladies in
Spock IS Quinto (alternate: Topher Grace. Think about it, how ALIEN he could make Spock)
McCoy: Sinise is perfect. They can explain the age diff by saying Starfleet requires all head doctors to be vets with X yrs of experience due to heavy responsibility of relieving Capt of command in a crisis.
Scotty: Chris Doohan. It is only right, and he is known by the Trek 'family'.Alternates: Sean Bean, Dougray Scott
Sulu: Shin Koyamada of The Last Samurai (he played Ken Watanabe's character's son) - black belt in karate and about the right age
(Y'all do know that 'Sulu' is a totally bastardized and nonJapanese name, right?)
Uhura: FREEMA AGYEMAN. She is HOT in the UK, will bring in Dr Who fans as mentioned here. Alternate: Naomi Ryan ("Mile High")
Chekov: who cares, any ACTUAL Russian actor will be better
Rand: Laura Vandervoort (Smallville's Supergirl)
Gary Mitchell: Justin Long (Live Free or Die Hard, Mac commercials)
Captain Christopher Pike: Neal McDonough (Third Watch, Traveler, Lt. Hawk in ST: 1st Contact) - projects authority with every line

Whaddaya think?

#258 - Maybe McCoy was all "danger-loving" before he got nearly killed in that big dangerous mission with a young Starfleet officer and his half-breed Vulcan colleague. After that early mission, he learned to take it easy and yearned for the days where things were safe.

I have a few casting suggestions;
I know everyone loves sinese for McCoy but I would prefer to see Greg Kinnear in the role. I think there is a good resemblance and even though he does not typically play the crusty grizzled annoyed type, he has shown moments of good intensity and I think he is an actors actor who could almost certainly do the role a great deal of justice. I know everyone wants to see a high profile glam girl like Beyonce play Uhura, but I have always been stunned by the very strong resemblance of Chilli from the R&B group TLC. Don't think so? Look at her photos and cover her hair! Plus as a singer, she would have the vocal qualities to pull the role off beautifully. A lot of people think of her strictly as a R&B or Hip Hop ghetto girl, but she does have acting talent, an expressive face and a great resemblance to a young Nichelle Nichols, which I think is an unbeatable combination. Plus it couldn't hurt drawing in new audiences to this genre of sci fi. My choice for Scotty??? Angus McFadyen from Rat Pack and Spartacus etc... has the chops and the range to make scotty really live. Nuff said about Scotty... I won't touch kirk because he too controversial. The only thing I am absolutely certian of is that no 2 people would share the same choice for this role. I'd love to see Gary Mitchell in this movie as I feel he would be an important lynch pin to the series. Kirk & Mitchell were VERY close, and that friendship would be a great insight to Kirks character the same with his brother Sam. Those characters could help define kirk the same way that the one great scene in the undiscovered country defined Spock, you know that one where a younger Sarek comments on Spocks birth. Pike would be another great one to show if for no other reasons than it would help to fill & round out the historical plotline and also highlight the major differences between Kirk & Pike as captains as well as friends to Spock. These things in my opinion will show the evolution of the Star Trek "family" because families grow over time and by sharing experiences not just with each other, but with the other people they encounter along the way, through comparitive relationships.

I LOVE TOS. LOVE! Ya hear me? L-O-V-E. It was brilliant and awesome.

But as much as I love the original, I don't care if the new films keep the cannon or not. Just like Comic Books and the Bond franchise, Star Trek simply cannot stay cutting edge and relevant if they bow to the whim of every one of us uber-fans who know the history of the Federation better than we actually know the history of the 20th Century.

I know "reboot" is an ugly word in these parts, but if the new films (there will be more than one, right?)- anyway, if the new films are, say, 80% cannon and 20% re-imagining, that should be good enough. Heck, even 50-50 might still be a wonderful product.

At the end of the day, this is a fictional time-line we're talking about here people! Don't shackle the creative vision of Abrams and crew just because you can't handle re-writing the history books of the 23rd Century. Just go watch the gosh-darned movie and let it entertain you instead of going all Comic-Book-Guy and pulling out your Memory Alpha Prime crib notes and craping on the parade.

#57- Regarding Blish's novelizations.

The novelizations that JB did have a LOT of problems with them. First of all, the original idea was to do just a few of the 'best' (Hugo nominated) scripts. The novelization of EVERY episode was an afterthought. Because of this the order of the episodes in the novelizations was quite random. However, JB at some point decided that the stories came in the order he was writing them. Also, he did not work from the shooting scripts. And JB, for some reason (perhaps to fill in background) tried to fit ST into his Cities In Flight chronology, which screws up the whole mess.

About the only thing that can be said about JB's novelizations is that they WERE done, and he did try to explain McCoy's dislike of the transporter (in Spock Must Die!).

Just curious if Leonard McCoy's description of "Danger-Loving" is well.. he loves a little danger? If so, this doesn't sound like McCoy because Leonard always wanted to seem to stay out of harm's way. He didn't even like using the transporter (I didn't read through all of the comments but some of these points have probably been made.) He just had this sort of had this country style charm and very friendly.

The new film might work, but here's the thing (Rich Vos opening line)... Enterprise will likely be better because the whole cast was new and many episodes (not all) looked like feature film work. Jesus JJ don't frack this up. You ain't no Ron Moore and this ain't BSG. My goodness don't make this a Shark Sandwich.
