Last word on the Star Trek Star Wars issue.

I like them. I love Star Wars and I enjoy The original Star Trek. But some of you made comments that just prove that you are talking without reading.

Spock had green blood and Yoda was green? Really? There were not literally hundreds of little green men films in the 1950s and 1940s?

One said Lucas was not a sci-fi fan. That poster is just wrong. That's why his first movie was THX 3811 a sci fi movie that opens with old Buck Rogers. Lucas said he loved sci fi Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers are but two examples.

Star Wars would not have been made if it weren't for Star Trek. That may be partically true, but Planet of the Apes gets just as much credit. Lucas said he wanted to make a Flash Gordon. He could not get the rights. He made Star Wars.

Photon Torpedos (and I could be wrong but where are they mentioned in any of the original three or three prequils?), words like jettison and parsec were around a long time before Star Trek. (check out some great sci-fi of the 30's 40's and 50's)
cloud city--as I stated in my post earlier, this may have been inspired by Star Trek.
3. creatures in Journey to Babel resembling the cantina in SW. Nice try. Not quite. The aliens look quite different. As they should, Star Trek understandably had a smaller T.V. budget.
4. some sound effects in ST used in SW” Not because of Lucas. That would because of soundman Ben Burndt, I think that's his name. I would have to look that up.

I'm not saying that Lucas was in no way inspired by Star Trek, or never borrowed anything from the show. But my point was that to say he "totally ripped off Star Trek" is just not the case. He was inspired just like the writers from Star Trek from a wide range of films and books sci fi and otherwise.

As for what you like and don't like--don't care. I like Star Trek too. I just happen to like Star Wars more and I really hate reading comments that are not true. Call me a fanboy if you want, but I have never dressed like my favorite sci-fi character--not since I was seven years old.

It is hard to think of one without the other though, isn't it. Whenever Kirk or Spock were in anything without the other it felt very strange to me. And somewhat sad.

I always assumed that this new film would be 'Kirk Begins' until i read that news thread here a few weeks ago about how it would be more 'Spock Begins'

And I've really come around to thinking that they are right to center on Spock...

Spock is the 'quinto'-sential Star Trek character...i mean i know twas The Shat who was hired as the star but its really all became more about Nimoy and Spock...(both in front and behind the camara)

Spock was there in The Cage...He went from being a co-star/character to a total equal to Kirk/Shatner...He even had one of the films named after him...and when he died it was a BIG DEAL...so much so they had to bring him back...In fact movies 1-6 were pretty much more about Spock than they were Kirk...

As one of TMP producers stated on the dvd 'to have Star Trek without Spock would be like having a car without wheels.' Even Meyer said in his commentary on TWOK dvd that he opened the film with coming out of Spocks ear because he felt that his pointed ears were the quinesstinal Star Trek image...

I myself prefer Kirk/Shatner to Spock/Nimoy but theres no denying that Spock is perhaps the slightly more 'Star Trek' character...

James Roday for Kirk??? He'd be worse than that British singer that was being bandied about. And they laughed when I suggested Jensen Ackles.

Well, not to be morbid, but if Nimoy is THAT essential to the film, then they better get on with it! He's not getting any younger, you know! (yeah, yeah, I know...neither are we!)

#70 Anthony -- That's pretty cool. I'd interpreted Nimoy's earlier remark to mean that the older-Spock role was meaty and/or meaningful, but that didn't in itself imply to me that the whole enterprise depended on his participation. It would be possible for there to be an older-Spock bookend role that did also include some good, meaningful character work for him (and maybe even provide a nice wrap-up for Spock's lifelong character arc), but one that could still be excised from the movie without having to rethink the early-Spock storyline. But the idea that they would actually have to rework the story significantly if Nimoy didn't participate implies a whole other level of "ingetral"ness, at least to me.

I'm becoming very interested in this one.

well actually nimoy himself said as much in hiis interview with trekmovie.com...and Abrams said the film was spock centric in his interview with EW.

It is my understanding that (older) Spock is essential to the film and not just a \'bookend\'

OK, I'm going to try to edge past all of the silly fanboy posturing and comment on the article above, particularly this quote:

"We knew the odds that our script would actually lure Nimoy were about a million to one, but it was a gamble we had to take, even knowing that if he said no, the whole thing was for nothing."

This is the first thing that I've heard that really makes it sound to me like Nimoy's older Spock is actually really, really integral to the story. This quote seems to imply that if Nimoy didn't want to do the film, that they'd actually have to rework the thing fundamentally ("the whole thing was for nothing.") I may be reading too much in, of course, but this really does not sound like a "old Spock tells [person X] a story about his youth."
