They will certainly come up with season sets containing Star Trek without these new CG effects in HD. Question is: Will these be sperate releases containing only the original version of Star Trek or will they eventually come up with HD DVDs making use of seamless branching etc. and containing both versions. But of course these sets will only be released after the TOS-R-only sets have sold well. Lucas did the same thing with Star Wars on DVD (well, not quite since picture quality of the original versions of the Star Wars films is rubbish). CBS wants to sell these incomplete sets in order to have something to offer to the fans in a few years. No doubt, there will be better HD-Disc versions of Star Trek (either on Blu ray or HD DVD) in the future. Remember the single disc versions of the Star Trek films on DVD. These were quite expensive and did not even offer good picture quality (some of them weren't even anamorphic). Eventually, they came up with "Special Editions" of the films on DVD offering improved picture quality and many more extras. This won't be the last release of Star Trek.

Besides that, Compassionate God, you are absolutely right that it's a shame that the original versions of the show aren't included. I won't buy a set not containing the original versions of Trek in HD. I hope many more people won't either.

#87 - Anthony--No, i'm not advocating it, or telling anyone else to engage in the act. Furthermore, you seem to see things clearly, but n this case, I think suggesting I want to trigger a flame war is over the top, especially when you consider the majorty of my posts here have not contained flame-bait of any kind.

#88 Okay, M. Hall, thanks for being honest enough to admit your past actions. Moreover, to everyone, if I had things my way, CBS would not be so aggressive about pushing TOS-R, and respect the millions of pre-TOS-R fans enough to provide the series sans CG as well as the "R" version. If a profit is the real concern, then catering to one of entertainment history's most established fan (read: money) bases would seem....logical.

Consumer "comfort" counts too. That is why after the old days of buying the laserdiscs which only featured 2 episodes per disc, when the early DVDs (also containng two per) were released, I took a step back..because I knew full well Paramount would sit on that for awhile, then release season sets years later, which I purchased.

Companies can & will always place the consumer in 2nd place.

...but my "beef" is that they want many plain old DVD users with basic DVD players to convert to a dual players or single format players, replace a dozen -to-1000-to-whatever number DVDs on HD (or Blu-Ray), and in the case of Trek, only offer the "R" version to the very loyal fans who may also want the version which made them fans (and Trek merchandise consumers) in the first place!

Yes, CBS owes us nothing, and we are certainly not forced to buy the forthcoming set, but if money is the centra motivator, why would you deliberately omit something (HD TOS sans R") that would stand to earn even more millions?

"Compassionate," I'm not avoiding anything; I simply have a life outside of this site. And to answer your question: yes, I have downloaded programs and videos on (rare) occasion that I shouldn't have--but I didn't outright boast about my intention to do so or couch my rationalization for it with the remarkable contention that it was the fault of the party I was stealing from anyhow, since their work was shoddy and they "already have enough of my money." No, they have enough of your money when you pay them for the services they've rendered--in this case, for those DVD extras you apparently can't live without. Anything less is stealing, period, regardless of how you choose to justify it to yourself. I don't myself have any great love for the way corporate capitalism is practiced in 21st century America, but those are the rules, like it or not.

Anthony, thanks for injecting a little sanity into this discussion. My last word, I promise.

<p>actually God it seems you are still advocating the piracy of this set and trying to spark a flame war while you are at it...I suggest you stop...and everyone else too

#84- Anthony: Of course, i'm not avocating posting info/links to illegal content/whatever.

#85 Commodore Z: My statement in #81 and #83 still stands. The TELLING part is revealed when others point fingers, but suspiciously AVOID answering my question, which speaks volumes and reveals THEIR hypocricy, more than anything else.

#79: If you want to "share" your purchase with a friend by loaning him/her your copy of your legally-purchased DVD, then there is, indeed no thievery concerned.

If you make a copy of that same DVD (or a copy of a recording from TV), then you are indeed stealing, no matter what rationalization you might make, and no matter what fingers you might point at others. The world isn't always the way you'd like it to be.

Receiving copied DVDs you did not pay for is illegal and is stealing. It will not be advocated on this site and anyone who ever posts information or links regarding this will be banned without warning. You can chose to buy or not to buy, but piracy is not a legitimate alternative choice.

I suggest that people just calm down. Paramount are not requiring you to buy. You can watch them for free on syndication, buy them off itunes and xbox live (more episodes will eventually show up), rent the DVDs or buy the DVDs...or do none of the above. No guns are being held to any heads and some of the anger here is just absurd.

#82: "I didn’t say the rest of us have never shared a recording or two, but at least we’re not in denial about the action we have taken"

That's just the point you MISS; #77 (Hall) posted a charge as though he did not commit such acts, which led to my response. You see, i've already admitted to a desire to get rip of the HD extras, but recognize it for what it is--one friend sharing with another. It was not until Hall tried to play Paramount Attorney that the conversation took another step forward.

If he cannot say he's avoided media duplicates during the course of his life, then he realizes he was the true hypocrite for pointing accusatory fingers in my direction.

Compassionate, you have a unique perspective on things. You're pointing the finger of blame at us for suggesting that you are taking something that you didn't pay for.....I didn't say the rest of us have never shared a recording or two, but at least we're not in denial about the action we have taken. It's not a question of hypocrisy, but rather one of self-honesty. We recognize the transgressions we have committed in our life, the question is, do you?

#80: Nice try, but the judge is not buying it, Harry. Unless anyone here can say "I have never shared or received a copy of any kind of media EVER", then all arguments against are pure, steaming BS.
