Star Trek Movie To Get Vulcan Premiere? September 20, 2007

by Charles Trotter , Filed under: Paramount, Star Trek (2009 film) , trackback

The residents of Vulcan, Alberta are hoping the new Star Trek movie will make its first contact in their town. The idea is the brainchild of Dayna Dickens, the tourism coordinator for the small Canadian community which has been leveraging its Trek sounding name into tourist dollars for decades. Dickens tells TrekMovie.com the idea has the support of community leaders and she is currently working with the Alberta Film Commission on a formal proposal to Paramount. Landing the Star Trek premiere may be a long shot, but it is not without precedent. Dickens noted Fox held the recent premiere for The Simpsons Movie in town of Springfield, Vermont. Vulcan may have some competition from other self-proclaimed ‘Trek towns’ such Riverside, Iowa (’future birthplace of Kirk) and Linlithgow Scotland (’future birthplace of Scotty’). But Dickens is not daunted, observing "the worst they can do is say ‘no.’"

What lives in Vulcan, prospers in Vulcan
Vulcan has been using the Trek connection since the original series debuted. This connection grew throughout the years and in 1993 the town held their first Star Trek convention. Today, visitors to Vulcan will be greeted by a replica of the movie Starship Enterprise at the town’s main entrance. The town receives over 12,000 visitors per year, and the Vulcan Tourism & Trek Station — a tourist information center designed as a landing spacecraft — is the most popular destination in town. Dickens notes that it would be fitting to have the premiere in Vulcan not only because of the name but because 2008 also marks the tenth anniversary of the station’s grand opening. If they don’t get the premiere, though, it is possible they could obtain a sneak preview and they may promote the film in some other fashion. "We’re open to anything," Dickens says.

Firstish.

2. Paul - September 20, 2007

Well maybe they could make it into a contest like the Simpsons did. Off the top of my head there’s the obvious San Francisco CA, Enterprise AL, and being from Oklahoma I know of two small towns named Romulus and Remus. This sounds great!

3. Demode - September 20, 2007

Oh, those crazy Canadians!

…Hey, wait a second… I’m a Canadian!

4. scott - September 20, 2007

Its Paramount,! Saying No, They Shall.

5. Kobayashi Maru - September 20, 2007

Why not, it is Vulcan.

6. Charles Trotter (Chuck Amuck) - September 20, 2007

I would like to thank Dayna Dickens for taking the time to talk with me and for letting us use her images. Vulcan has my vote for the premiere. :)

7. Xai - September 20, 2007

If Vulcan gets it, Riverside, IA gets it.

… and Scotland, SanFrancisco, Russia, some place in Georgia, Africa….

8. Plum - September 20, 2007

It would be funny to have Shatner return to Vulcan! And hey, I seem to recall a friend telling me they have a nice old theatre there.

9. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

Why not HELL !! Without Shatner…..It will Suck!

10. Enterprisingguy - September 20, 2007

#9 Why not HELL !! Without Shatner…..It will Suck!

It will be great BillsFan!!

They couldn’t afford to film the movie in IMAX to get all of Bill’s fat self on the screen. So we will enjoy what JJ and the rest create for us! Just be glad we are getting new Trek. I’m grateful!

11. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

#10 See ….I’m a Fan of TOS…I want to see the Original Cast..I appreciate that we are ‘Lucky’ enough to get a new Film…but why not use The originals that are left, before they are all dead. Fat or not I still want Bill. Did you not like James Doohan when he blew up… shallow…

12. Q - September 20, 2007

“Yeah, we just got back from the Vulcan premiere of Star Trek XI.”

That would be great! I hope that they actually make it happen. Go Vulcan!

13. myspace.com/startrekcasting - September 20, 2007

Has anyone considered the possibility that Leonard Nimoy will die in the movie?

J.J. said during the Comic Con that he was “going to put on the ears one more time.”

It sounds like the older Spock might die in this one to allow the new cast to take over completely.

I LOVE the original cast and it would be very nice to see them in another movie, but I guess that’s what we have Star Trek The New Voyages for. :-)

14. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

hopefully ”one more time”…..not one LAST time..

15. Michael - September 20, 2007

Premier in, (on?), Vulcan would be a nice bit of marketing for Paramount.
I look forward to some interesting marketing to pull in new fans.
You know, the folks that Don’t visit this site 5-8 times a day to see what’s new…(By the way, Thanks Anthony, Chuck Amuck, and everyone!!)

Also, can we PLEASE shoot someone out of the airlock if they say First?

16. Harry Ballz - September 20, 2007

As a fellow Canadian I find it encouraging that they may consider holding the premiere of the movie in Vulcan, Alberta. Talk about a small town, though…..the last time I was there I tried to visit the town library, but it was closed……somebody had checked the book out!

17. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

So…Ballz…I don’t think I’ve read your thoughts on Shatner in the movie…Hit Me!…Thanks.

18. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

You still ‘Hangin’ with us?

19. Kobayashi Maru - September 20, 2007

This isn’t generating a lot of thread play.
How about this:
There doesn’t seem to be anybody in the running
for “New Hotness” Kirk. I say we split the difference and let
“Old and Busted” Kirk play the young Kirk anyway.
That solves the dilemma of bringing Shatner back into the fold,
if not the problem of resurrecting Kirk on Veridian III.

20. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

Works for me..some sort of Radiation/Cholesterol accident!

21. jonboc - September 20, 2007

23. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

24. Kobayashi Maru - September 20, 2007

…Kind of an homage to “the Deadly Years” through the Milky Way (candy bars, that is!)… lots of them!

26. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

Maybe they could have Kirk in that thing like Pike….One for Yes Two for no…

27. Breen dude - September 20, 2007

They should rename their school “Vulcan Academy”.

28. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

Paramount could rent it from that guy in Trekkies…

29. DC - September 20, 2007

I’m surprised that no one’s mentioned Bozeman, Montana as a location for the premiere. I mean it’s where first contact was made/will be made/whatever

30. Kobayashi Maru - September 20, 2007

Kirk could use Pike’s gizmo like a sweat reducer!

So how do you think you guys are going to do against the Patriots this weekend? Good to hear that kid, Everett is getting the feeling and movement back in his extremeties. Why you got rid of your star running back I’ll never know but maybe the defense will shine this year. Just don’t let Belichick tape the coaching staff on the sidelines.

32. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

I can see the Enquirer headline now…”Shatner Electrocuted in on set Accident!”…

33. Kobayashi Maru - September 20, 2007

SURVIVED BY TOUPEE!

34. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

They could send the RUG out on tour…Coming soon to a mall near you…The Hair..The Hero…The Toupee that saved Shatner!!

Grounded by his Weave…

36. CmdrR. - September 20, 2007

7. “some place in Georgia”

That would be Atlanta, where DeForest Kelley called home.
And I’m not just saying that because I live in Atlanta.
Oh wait, that is why I’m saying that.

They could also do a Matrix and premiere at the same moment in cities globally.

37. Kobayashi Maru - September 20, 2007

It could be like Elvis’ limo going on tour, or King Tut!

38. Xai - September 20, 2007

Once again a hijacked thread…

39. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

#31 Belichick lent his recording equipment to OJ’s ‘Friend’…

40. Jackie Chiles-Mugatu's Lawyer - September 20, 2007

Actually the headline will be a real head scratcher since it will be followed by “Incident is particularly odd as he wasn’t to appear in movie.”

41. Jackie Chiles-Mugatu's Lawyer - September 20, 2007

Sorry, Bucko, I was just having some fun w/ your screen tag.

42. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

HA! I think it would be cool to have the Premeir in Vulcan…But do you actually think Paramount would do that…They don’t think that way. Vulcan hasn’t got the $$$ to spiff them..

43. Kobayashi Maru - September 20, 2007

Xai,
Vulcan, Alberta is (yawn) fascinating… zzzz

44. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

Canada in December….nippy!!

45. Kobayashi Maru - September 20, 2007

This is not news, casting reports are too long coming!

46. Jeffrey S. Nelson - September 20, 2007

Sounds logical, eh?

47. John Gill - September 20, 2007

…Loonie

48. Harry Ballz - September 20, 2007

#17 “So…Ballz…I don’t think I’ve read your thoughts on Shatner in the movie”

Here’s what I think….whether people want Shatner in the movie or not…it’s a question of missed opportunities…if we’re EVER to see Shatner reprise the role of Kirk one last time, it better be NOW before he gets too old or passes on us. The launch of the “rebooted” Star Trek franchise with this new movie is an ideal opportunity to have Kirk and Spock “pass the torch” to their reinvented selves. Some have argued that maybe the script doesn’t allow for Shatner’s appearance….well, all I can say is, MAKE the script work, and not because I’m a fanboy, and not because it’s the right thing to do, but NOW, at this point in time, it is the only opportunity to accomplish closure and symmetry to the story arc of THE ORIGINAL SERIES known as Star Trek! Abrams et al should “take one for the gipper” and do what everyone (not just fans, but general audience) wants and expects. The masses who go to see this film, and witness an elderly Spock, will feel DIMINISHED if they don’t have the old Kirk they know and love presented to them one last time! Class should overrule logistics in this one particular circumstance! And a final word of assurance to the beancounters, “don’t worry, it’ll still be a hit!”

49. BillsFan - September 20, 2007

BRAVO!! I SO Agree…It really is a no Brainer…Thank you Sir.

50. Harry Ballz - September 20, 2007

My pleasure!

51. Kirk: The Jack Bauer of Space - September 20, 2007

the Enterprise has a different number, and looks slightly different. I wonder if they did that intentionally in an attempt to protect themselves from getting sued by Paramount.

It is not exactly the Enteprise, no. And the letters? They are the call letters of the Vulcan airport.

53. Jordan - September 20, 2007

I live near Vulcan and went there durring the summer. Nice small town.

And it dosn’t snow much in December anymore…

54. Harry Ballz - September 20, 2007

I hear the town is so small, that as you drive in, there’s a sign saying “you are now entering Vulcan”, and on the other side of the sign it says, “you are now leaving Vulcan”. Ba-dum-bum!!

55. Sleeper Agent X - September 20, 2007

Hmmm… Good luck to Vulcan, but if Paramount has no trouble blowing off Steven Spielberg–I don’t care what you think of him, he’s one of THE major directors of the era!–then I’m not sure what hope Vulcan has.

Any chance of getting an article about the dealings with Paramount and Dreamworks, Anthony? I’m sure it could be spun some way to be Trek relevant….now that Spielberg and Co. are looking to walk, doesn’t Star Trek just become that much more important to Paramount?

56. Lendorien - September 21, 2007

I suggest that Spock will die in this movie, or somehow, either through a mindmild or perhaps a narrative, he’ll recount meeting Kirk et al. Really, I think that’s how it’ll end up. You’ll have this connect between old and new and the next movie round, Nimoy won’t be needed.

I think that having the premier in a town associated with Star Trek would be a great idea, though I’d be against doing San Fransisco (it being a big city that gets plenty of Hollywood stuff already). Do it some small town place. The Simpsons got a lot of good publicity for doing it, and so, shall Star Trek if it’s done in similair matter. Good publicity is good publicity.

And by all that’s good and pleasent, can we please let go of the “Shatner must be in this movie” junk? We’ve heard it. Over and over and over and over and over. We get the point. Now please get the point that Shatner is unlikely to be in it so far as every bit of news we’ve gotten so far has told us, and the constant pontificating about it to people who obviously are tired of hearing it is starting to get tedious. No, more than tedious, obnoxious. He’s not going to be in it. The movie will likely be just fine without him. Move on and deal with it. Seriously.

…Scotland in December…nippier!!…

#48 Harry Ballz
Very, very nicely put about William Shatner…and you seem to be on fire today…

#55 Sleeper Agent X
Didn’t you just get sent to the ‘Nexus’ for a while?…can you tell J.J. and his writers how you got out so soon, or are you an ‘alternate timeline’ Sleeper Agent X?… ;)

#56 Lendorien
I hope your wrong about ‘older’ Spock dying in this Movie, as I still remember the damper that put on ‘Generations’… I always thought that it was obvious there was a ‘way out’ for him in that coda at the end of ‘Khan’, so I wasn’t too unhappy then…

58. Fidgit - September 21, 2007

56 - “the constant pontificating about it to people who obviously are tired of hearing it is starting to get tedious. No, more than tedious, obnoxious. He’s not going to be in it. The movie will likely be just fine without him. Move on and deal with it. Seriously.”

I could not agree more. Tedious, obnoxious and, I might add, childish.

We get the message, already. Can we talk about something interesting?

59. Cervantes ( waiting for that Scotty casting announcement... ) - September 21, 2007

Just a little thing concerning James Doohan…

Now, now…..I was asked for my opinion regarding Kirk’s return and I simply provided it. Fair is fair.

61. StillKirok - September 21, 2007

The only thing that will make things worse about this movie on top of cutting out Shatner is to kill off older Spock. It’s bad enough the writers were full of it regarding their desire to include Shatner, but the idea of using this movie to kill off Nimoy’s Spock would be so bad that I probably would never watch anything Star Trek related that they did again. I’m still leaning against seeing this at all, given their mistreatment of Shatner. But the idea of killing the Spock character, especially after the backfire of Kirk’s death, is just ridiculous.

Fortunately, no one involved in the movie has suggested that and I can’t fathom the idea that something so ludicrous would even be considered by someone who’s name isn’t Rick Berman, Brannon Braga or Ron Moore.

62. Diabolik - September 21, 2007

Maybe they’re not killing off Spock. He just dies. That happens to old people.

But I’d prefer they not let it happen.

63. Kobayashi Maru - September 21, 2007

All this speculation is going where no one has gone before!
I sincerely hope that JJ & Co. are sincere in what they dribble out to the press rather than blow smoke up the fans’ collective tailpipe just to control spin.
Harry Ballz entry about why the opportunity for Shatner’s involvement is the most sound argument that has ever been posed. It doesn’t matter how, just let us know IF there is some smattering of hope for what will truly be a great MOVIE moment, let alone Star Trek moment!
Time is not on our side anymore!

64. StillKirok - September 21, 2007

If Spock dies, they are killing him off. That’s not what Star Trek is about.

A TOS regular’s final appearance, and that applies to any of them, should be riding off into the sunset–optimistic. That’s the reason Kirk’s death failed so badly. It left a bitter taste in the mouths of many, many fans, and that’s why there has been such a struggle to get the character back ever since.

65. Kobayashi Maru - September 21, 2007

#64
Here here, that is probably why it is such a compulsion.
Even Spock’s original death was uplifting!

66. StillKirok - September 21, 2007

No it wasn’t. It was well written. But not uplifting. And they brought him right back in the next movie. THAT was the positive outcome.

Not only did Spock sacrifice everything for his friends, but his friends gave up everything to bring him back. THAT was uplifting.

The story didn’t end there. And the character has plenty of use left.

67. Shatner_Fan_2000 - September 21, 2007

#48 … BRAVO. CLAP, CLAP, CLAP!!!

I agree w/ Mr. Ballz on every point. I’m eagerly anticipating this film and it’s possible I might even love it. But if I walk out of there without having seen the great Shatner, I will view it as a colossal missed opportunity. Nimoy is cool, but Spock without Kirk is like a margarita without the tequila! Unification and the Kirk scenes in Generations felt off balance - because they were. It’s the let down that results when you break up a classic team.

68. Kobayashi Maru - September 21, 2007

“Tis a far, far better thing…”
Matter of opinion #66, but either way, it was far more heroic than being on
a metal fatigue weary bridge when it collapses, and that seems to be the proverbial twist in most fans’ knickers when it comes to the final moments of Kirk’s history in the canon.
And #67, I agree about it all feeling off balance, even if Shatner/Kirk is held off till the end, it will restore that balance.

69. JB Gestl - September 21, 2007

Other places for the premier:

Carbon Creek
Broken Bow

Someone else already said Bozeman.

70. snake - September 21, 2007

Star Trek without The Shat is like a quarter pounder without the fries…

71. Jackie Chiles-Mugatu's Lawyer - September 21, 2007

#70
Not as fattening?

(easy now, I’m just joking)

72. StillKirok - September 21, 2007

#66–I agree–it’s a matter of opinion. The biggest difference between ST2 and Generations is that when the legendary character died in TWOK, it was necessary to the plot. It was well written. It was powerful. And I think that the scene where Kirk has to be held back is one of the finest acted scenes in Trek history. Such a good movie.

But had that been the end of Spock, it would have been awful. But even at the end of Trek II, we were left with hope for Spock.

Hope for Kirk comes in the form of Shatner’s books, and they were great, but since they’re not canon, the disappointment and bitterness still continues, made worse by the producers alleged desires to have him in the movie, despite not writing him a part.

73. Kobayashi Maru - September 21, 2007

No argument here, Kirok.
I believe we all would think it a shame if this was the window of opportunity,
and the new stewards of Star Trek legacy simply let it shut.
I think for me the singular moment of greatness in Trek history was that shot of Kirk being held back from helping Spock. It echoed what he had to do to Bones in “City on the Edge of Forever” perfectly.

74. StillKirok - September 21, 2007

#73–right on the money. They can do it all.

And I never thought about the City on the Edge thing before. Interesting point. I don’t think that was intentional, but you have a hell of a point. There are a lot of differences though, but I see what you’re saying.

75. Shatner_Fan_2000 - September 21, 2007

If the leaked plot rumors are true, JJ & co are using the basic plot structure of COTEOF for XI!

1) accident sends someone back in time
2) time traveler negatively alters future
3) Spock follows accidental time traveler into the past to set it right

So let’s see the Guardian (and Shatner) in this movie, JJ!

76. Xplodin' Nacelle - September 21, 2007

I wish somebody would repaint the correct registration numbers on that replica in the picture. It’s embarrasing. Geeeez!!!

77. Harry Ballz - September 21, 2007

With all the dweebs standing in front of the replica, and you think the NUMBERS are the embarrasing part?? Yikes!!!

78. Xplodin' Nacelle - September 22, 2007

Yeah, it makes it look like we can’t read

82. Harry Ballz - September 23, 2007

Pssst, Jackie…do you know why they’re starting to use lawyers in lab experiments instead of rats?

Answer: There are some things a rat won’t do…………

and you can become emotionally attached to a rat!!

83. Bobsid - May 7, 2008

hi I’m new here, I love Star Trek and i love the Shatner books about the continuing stories of Kirk in starting with the The Ashes of Eden. I think they would be great CGI movies and would be a good alternate universe storie. The Stories are great.
What does everyone else think?
