I just heard he didn’t get the role!!! That is just SO wrong! Especially cause
the actor they did hire is stupid! He only knows how to do comedy for Cripe’s sake! I forget his name but he was in that cop movie and the
zombie flic I saw that was only ok….he’s got red hair for cryin’ out loud!
JJ this is just stupid on your part! The movie is gonna tank now.

As much as I’d like to believe that, its definately NOT true. Paul has said from the moment the news broke officially that he was totally surprised & disappointed at the decision to kill off ‘Beckett’. It was a decision made by the Producers NOT the actor. Hence the massive worldwide fan outcry and campaign which was successful in getting the character back even before the episode airred in the States!!!

Paul DID NOT want to leave SGA and even if he is cast for ‘Trek’ ***still assuming human pretzel*** it shoots over Stargate: Atlantis hiatus, so theres no need.

About Pauls chances of being Scotty: remember his character Dr. Beckett on Stargate Atlantis got killed off last season and I suspect it was done so Paul will have time to film the Trek movie

Hahaha set phasers to Malky! Yeah, but only the Scots or peps with a Scottish connection will have a clue what they’re on about…though hell, I would be laughing hard if I was the only one who got the ‘joke’! Then again, you dont want Scotty sprouting Americanisms with a Scottish accent! I think Orci and co are smart enough to know its not ‘what’ Scotty says, its how he says it (aka the word/sentence structure) and I’m sure if they get a real Scot (like Paul) they’ll help to make sure the dialogue is authentic and not stereotypical. Its one of the reasons I loved Paul as ‘Carson’ on Stargate, he was anything BUT a stereotype, be that as a Scot or a ‘Scifi mele hero’!

I can deal with the trekbabble crap about dilithium crystals etc, but I’ll swing for someone if they make him say lots of twee faux Scottishisms that nobody really says like, infamously, “the haggis is in the fire for sure” etc. Spare me, please. I’d rather they went down the Taysiders In Space route!

Hey, TJ, is there a con vid floating around of him doing the proper Glaswegian accent? With him saying more than “right bloody here, mate!”? I think it would be interesting to see, and it may help prove your point. :D I’ve nought heard anything but his North Americanized Carson accent and the outrageous BombaBoy accent.

On topic, I’ll definitely agree that Paul would be a fantastic choice for the role. He’s one of the most hard-working actors I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching, and you just know he’ll do the role justice. He has the chops and the dedication to do it right.

He’s also pretty alike to the late great Jimmy Doohan in the looks department, which is helpful. :)

Well they’re casting to fit as close to the original cast as possible hence my support of McGillion; looking like Doohan is important! And I know dozens who love Paul for the role (from everywhere from Dennison to Perth). Oh and I liked Jamie Sives in Dr Who! But then it was a fab episode. As for the rest, yup definately agree with you there, I’m hoping that this movie proves there’s life in the old dog afterall and brings Trek back to its prime! Though, please god no OTT crap about dilithium crystals…I agree on the ‘no trekbabble’ comment someone made on another article here.

Oi’ an’ no Weegie bashin’, or Paisley for that mind, its given genre fans plenty to be happy for…David Tennent, Gerard Butler, Paul McGillion…and isn’t John Barrowman original from there or near by? ;)

I think it’s a bit bold to say that Scotland is behind Paul McGillion. I read the article in The Hootsmon (I don’t/won’t buy the other papers, not that the Herald/Scotsman are much above tabloids), and I know a few folk who aren’t too hot on him as a choice for Scotty, but maybe that’s an anti Weege thing!

I think Jamie Sives not having had any major roles and not looking like a photocopy of James Doohan might be a blessing to take this ‘new’ Trek in a new and interesting direction.

Anyway, we can expend hot air here for fun, but Abrams etc will pick who they see fit, and it’s a supporting role as the film will probably centre on Spock and Kirk. And I’m sure when we see McGillion moaning about dilithium crystals we’ll think it was an inspired choice, we’ll just be so glad to see the show back on the big screen.

Paul’s said on many an occassion that when he’s with his family, they tend to talk in the Scottish accent and always have as both his parents have strong accents. So both are normal to him. Plus his ‘Beckett’ accent in Atlantis is adjusted for American TV as was requested of him. I’ve seen him at a con in Glasgow, doing full on Weegie (Glaswegian) and the crowd loving it and totally approving. He apparently has a habit of using the accent when he’s in Scotland too and no one being any the wiser.

And no one can deny he’s got a striking resemblence to Doohan, as well as having interesting parallel’s to Doohan (as he’s also a Canadian) and Chris Doohan’s endorsement (Jimmy’s son) . Plus anyone who is a fan of Paul’s and seen him outside of Stargate like the multi-award winning ‘See Grace Fly’ know he is one hell of an actor too.

And if thats not enough, Scotland is behind him! This weekend alone there were large articles in 4 major national papers here (Daily Express, Mail on Sunday, The Scotsman on Sunday and Daily Star) picking up from TrekMovies’ lead, as well as Scotland’s biggests sunday paper, ‘The Sunday Post’ last week!

Jamie Sives is an interesting actor, I remeber him in Dr Who! But he’s not had any major roles and bares no resemblence to ‘Scotty’ and looks to be the same age as Paul (though he’s 4 years younger).
