Okay guys, here is the deal. I am 42 years old and have watched Star Trek for most of those years. I agree that really no one can replace Shatner as Captain Kirk but lets get serious. He is 76 and there is no clone. Cut Chris some slack and lets see how he does. When the new Trek comes out, I'll be there to watch it. It's not about who plays Kirk or dont. It's about traveling to new worlds and new civilizations to Boldly go where no man has gone before. Dont get lost in who plays Kirk. As long as they keep Roddenberrys vision in tact... does it matter ?? It never was the acting that kept me watching. I thought Kirk was cool, Spock and Bones was funny, and Scottie had everything...under control. Even when I thought the engines were going to blow and there was nothing he could do about it. Give this a chance. I dont think ayone will regret this.

I guess it's better to cast someone no one knows than to cast someone everyone knows because it would ruin the whole character i think it just wouldn't be the same. It would seem too hollywoodish if it was a really popular actor

I've read the lists of the top sci-fi tv shows here, and unless I'm wrong there's no mention of a major milestone in Sci-Fi:
Space 1999 (first season)
Before someone says the special effects were not up to today's standards let me me say that the acting and scripts more than make up for it. What's more the senior command staff is made up of people in their late 40's-50s. And the viewing audience is treated like intelligent adults, not kids with a 30 second attention span!
The Space:1999 episode Black Sun features an encounter with the Supreme Being outside of space and time after the moon falls into a Black Sun. This encounter is far more effective than Star Trek V, despite the improvement in special effects by that time(1989).
Now of course the year in which a lunar base was supposed to be fully operational(1999) has now come and gone but I will blame that on the unfortunate lack of interest in manned space exploration since the Apollo program.

How about Lee Pace as Kirk? I mean, Pushing Daisies is probably his priority, but it can be worked around, I'm sure. He'd be a great Kirk, I think.

I mean, I have nothing against Pine, I think he'd do great in the role.

So is this casting definate? I have heard on some sites it is. The casting so far has been interesting. I have no strong opinion yet as I was not watching the auditions. Remember if this group of actors really get into the script and mesh well together it should be a fun or at least interesting STAR TREK film unfolding. Well that is my hope next Dec. Remember it is only a film and not one's life. Rick beaming out.

285. Cygnus-X1

I agree that the looks are not as important, although to have a guy with a different hair color would look pretty strange. I think all you need is to retain the intensity and attitude of Kirk, which was largely due to Shatner's energy on screen.
