I’m pretty happy with the new cast. I must admit to being a little surprised by the Scott choice. But I will reserve judgement.

I was quite skeptical of Leonardo DeCaprio as Howard Hughes. But he did an incredible performance. So we’ll see what they do with “Shaun of the Dead” as Scott.

#37 & all other model proponents:

The most recent example of model usage I know of is Peter Jackson and Weta Workshop’s use of models in LOTR. They referred to them as “miniatures” and “bigatures.” (really BIG miniatures, i.e., Minas Morgul, Isengard) I thought they looked great! Whether that’s appropriate for Trek shots, I can’t say.

In the LOTR Geek — er, 12-disc Collector’s Edition DVD set, there’s all sorts of goodies showing how they combined models and CGI in each of the films. If you’re into FX, it’s quite fascinating.

No matter how detailed you get with CGI, it still has an “cartoon/computerized” quality to it.
Of course I’m old fashioned and like my models hanging from strings with Xmas lights for background stars.

Rather than arguing about the cast, look of the Enterprise etc I’m going to reserve judgment until I see the movie.

The writer’s and producers seem intent and staying as true to the original series as possible and from what I have seen and read on this site it seems the movie is in good hands!
