i think Simon Pegg is inspired casting - mark my words he will be absolutely brilliant!

They said the same thing about Pat Morita and the Mr Miagi character, he's a comic? how can he play gravitas...

Its so easy to imagine Simon portraying the tech loving infectious enthusiam of Scotty with the conservatism of the great Scottish Engineers.

Hair isn't everything, look what happened to Patrick Stewart.

I can't wait!

First of all, I'm shocked that I'm the first and only person here who HATES
this casting choice, no I LOATHE this casting choice but where are all the other Paul McGillion fans?! I am for Paul as Scotty all the way!!! As it stands, I have now lost all faith in the casting choices in this movie and therefore won't be seeing it! It's too bad too because I wanted to see Zack
as Spock and Paul as Scotty, the other actors, I didn't care about. What happened?! Paul was in the lead and had the majority of fan support and now comes this out of left field hiring choice of a red haired comedic doofus! JJ you lost it! No pun intended but this film is gonna tank now because you've lost the majority of people who wanted to see it ONLY if
Paul was hired! Chris, stop flip-flopping! If you hate this Pegg guy then just say so! You were such a strong Paul supporter, too! I loved your dad
as an actor and person by the way! I'm just disappointed in you for not
standing up for your choice. You let Paul and us Paul fans down.

To be honest with you, I did not think about his accent as bad or good having been exposed to it as a little kid. Now that I am older, yes it seemed like a bad impression. That's nothing against James Doohan. As for their intentions....I don't know. I mean, later on Sean Connery would play an Irish cop in the Untouchables, as well as a Spaniard, while Chris Lambert was cast as a Highlander....huh?

Just for the record, the guy who played Trip Tucker did not sound anything like a person from the part of Florida that his character was from. He said peacon all wrong, for example. In this part of the US, we pronounce it pee can.

I had a Canadian friend who did not think Canadians said "about" or "sorry" differently than most Americans; but they usually do.

But if you want to see--or should I say hear--a bad English accent check out Al Pacino. He doesn't sound English nor did he sound Columbian. Yet the sad thing is he seems to think he's great with accents. At least that's how it seemed on Larry King. But , if I recall right, didn't the call sheet ask for someone who could do a flawless Scottish accent? I don't recall anymore.

Here's a fun fact, there was an actor who played an American Indian in an old add here. For years people identified the man as a Native American actor. A little known fact is that the man who played the crying Indian was actually something like 100% Italian.

I'm amazed anyone thought Scotty's accent was a good scottish accent.

I thought it was supposed to be deliberately bad, as a joke… didn't the Americans get that?

Nice job there by the way, but I've just realised...that pic now makes Simon Pegg look like Ewan ( 'Spud' out of 'Trainspotting' ) Bremner, which is the last person on the planet that I wanted to get the 'Scotty' role...AAARGH! Oh cruel fate...

I saw James Doohan in Norfolk Va. in 1991. A class act. One of the nicest guys I ever met. Kudos for the Doohan's kind words about Simon Pegg

I'd just like to clarify that I really don't have anything against English Brits in general, or Simon Pegg in particular, at all...

For the sake of even-handedness, let me confirm that I would be equally disenchanted with this casting decision if it had gone to a Welsh Brit, Irish Brit, African Masai Tribesman, Innuit Eskimo, or Australian Aborigine, comedian or not...because the fact remains that the now-icon character of 'Scotty' is the one that is SPECIFICALLY so 'nicknamed' BECAUSE of his 'Scottishness' as well as it being a play on his 'surname'...and it is naturally a disappointment to find that a Scots actor hadn't been chosen this time around.

I blame the excellent ( yes, I have seen, and DO like a lot of his body of work ) Simon Pegg for going for the role in the first place! Heck, couldn't he have been content with going up for a 'red-shirt' cameo instead to satisfy his inner geek?... ;)

Still, it's down to the 'casting deciders' at the end of the day, but like some others, I find it strange that this particular casting doesn't seem as snug a fit as their other crew choices, when compared to the original actors that originally played the roles...
