Oh ya - I forgot about Joanna (McCoy's off camera daughter). I agree that too much family stuff has no place in a movie though - it would just slow it down!

I'll be very happy if they give Rand and Chapel more than a cameo. I'd be happy to see a face from Kirk's romantic past and Number One would be cool.

I'll be very annoyed if they ignore the existing female characters (especially Rand) in favour of some new and pointless love interest of the week. After 40 years I would hope that the writers have sussed that the recurring female characters in the sci-fi genre deserve to be treated as equals. It's a lesson the writers of Star Trek seem to have come to a lot later than other shows. I'll despair if they still haven't learned it by now!

#95: You're forgetting McCoy's daughter (granted, never mentioned in the series, but McCoy says something about 'my grandchildren' in one of the movies). Of course, McCoy was divorced, so your idea is backed up here, also. There of course is still Peter Kirk (and his brothers) to deal with, and any other nephews/nieces besides Peter Preston that Scotty had.
Notice also that few of the Star Trek crews EVER visit family or have other friends to phone or write or visit (Picard's visit home in that one episode stands out as an exception- and then they killed off HIS family in Generations!. Tied in with this is that no new characters were ever introduced that made it to a sequel (except Savaak and some background characters).

Nooooo. Cheesy goody-two-shoes characters are what is killing Trek. Characters need to be 3-dimensional and a dysfunctional love-hate relationship might help do that. However, Carol wasn't really bitter - she got her son after all. David was bitter that he never got a father.

Why Kirk and all his crew never commit to any kind of long-term relationships except Spock, who married after he retired, and Kirk, who was married for a year (TMP novel by Roddenbury) and who shacked up with Antonia for a brief period when he retired briefly after the second 5-year mission. None of them has any descendents in the 24th century that we know of, Kirk's only known child died, Rand's child (implied to be Kirk's) died (non-canon in the novel the Captain's Daughter), and we don't know if Demora Sulu had any children. If nobody ever breeds it makes you wonder why the human race is so prevalent in Starfleet... And thinking about it, why are so many of the children who do pop up born unplanned and out of wedlock... OMG this isn't utopia after all!

I just don't like the Carol Marcus character deciding to keep David in the dark about the identity of his father.Going back to see what she was like when she was younger is kind of like going back to see what made her so bitter.

I think the Carol Marcus relationship has the most potential in terms of back story so my suspicion is that she will be the one appearing. I think that young Kirk was rather shy and bookwormy so I hope they show that side of him rather than the gung-ho womaniser he becomes later on.

Janice Rand MUST be in this film! While it is true that she was assigned as Kirk's Yeoman after the pilot lets not forget that Chekov was fresh out of the Acadamy (off camera part way through season 1) and McCoy was not the CMO until part way through the first 5-year mission.

While Rand only appeared in 8 episodes, that was 8 out of 13 or so in the first half of season one (before Grace Lee Whitney was fired... grrr). Her character was intended to be the principle female lead (appearing in the promo pics with Kirk and Spock). She was the best defined of the women and the only one suited to running around planetside. I would love to see her potential realised.

A prequel should also definitely include Gary Mitchell I hope, Pike (confirmed) who should go hand in hand with Number One plus Chris Chapel who was a biologist and not just McCoy's sidekick.

Sorry about that. Occasionally, this board likes to randomly ignore my posting. I posted something earlier and was checking to see if I was an outcast.
BTW, that's why I changed my screen name.

#87/88 Ummm, Carol wasn't the dumpee, she was the dumper. She's the one who put Kirk out the door, not the other way around.

I'd say have *mention* of her, but Kerri as Janet (hmm, needs a maiden name: perhaps Tucker!? Archer!?) I think would make perfect sense. No sad castoff here... both of them left Earth for deep space missions.... Janet with Dr. Theodore Wallace's project, Kirk with command of the Enterprise.
