Patrick Stewart is the best actor who ever did Star Trek. There are Star Trek Actors, and then there are Actors who do Star Trek. He is one of those.

I think he grew immensely as Picard was fleshed out over the years. After Mr. Crabby meats Riker in EAF, moralizing (Measure of a Man), and then to a tour-de-force as Locutus (applause), and then moving on to the bits about aging and loneliness (Inner Light, All Good Things, and even bits of the movies), he did a great job in making the character and his arc real. X-men probably guaranteed his wealth forever. He was also unintentionally funny when he spoke Klingon.

The work must have been tough as well, so now he does what he loves with cash in the bank, knowing it was good work. No margarine ads, and no need to seek them out.

Mr. Stewart has had an interesting career, and has certainly not been pigeon-holed like many actors into certain parts. Some of the roles he has played apart from TNG:

A bad guy (Conspiracy Theory)
A cowboy (King of Texas)
Scrooge
Captain Ahab - a much different man than Picard
An HIV-positive homosexual (Jeffrey)
Numerous Shakespeare roles
Numerous animation roles

Quite a variety. These are all post-TNG, so I'm not much in agreement that he has been type-casted.

I reckon Patrick was very lucky to be associated with a series that lasted so long for him. There are so many actors out there that would have loved the idea of being cast as the Captain of the reimagined Star Trek when it first came out, EVEN if they were to end up 'typecast'...

Patrick is also very lucky to possess such a fine VOICE, as I think this is what has 'carried' him a lot throughout his career, rather than any fine acting. I caught his 'Captain Ahab' in the remake of 'Moby Dick' recently, and his portrayal was as stiff as his 'peg leg' unfortunately...

But Gregory Peck's 'cameo' was mighty fine.
