Nero Gets A Henchman – Hemsworth Confirmed

Khan had Joachim, Shinzon had his Viceroy, Goldfinger had Odd Job, and now Nero has Ayel. Trekmovie.com earlier reported that two of the central characters still to be cast for the new Star Trek movie were henchmen of the villain Nero, played by Eric Bana. Tonight Variety reports that Emmy-nominee Clifton Collins, Jr. has signed on to play Ayel, “the cohort and general to Nero.” Variety also confirmed the earlier story that 24-year-old Australian actor Chris Hemsworth will be playing Kirk’s father, George Kirk, Sr.

Who is Clifton Collins, Jr.?
Collins is the grandson of popular character actor Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez. The 37 year-old actor has worked with J.J. Abrams before, having played Javier Parez in three episodes of Alias. He has been acting in film and television since 1990, with a breakthrough role in the 1997 film One Eight Seven opposite Samuel L. Jackson He has since starred in such films as Traffic, The Last Castle, The Rules of Attraction, Mindhunters, and Dirty. In 2005, he played serial killer Perry Smith in Capote, which co-starred Bruce Greenwood (Capt. Pike in the new Trek movie). In 2006, Collins was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the short-lived series Thief. He currently has four films in post-production, including The Horsemen with Star Trek: First Contact‘s Neal McDonough.

Almost done
The casting for the new Star Trek movie is almost complete, with just a few loose ends to tie up like Spocks father and Kirk’s mother (then again either Rachel Nichols or Jennifer Morrison could be playing Kirk’s mom). Check out the our Star Trek cast page for the latest cast list.

FIRST!

Interesting news, wonder why the actor playing Kirk’s father is so young. A flash back to Kirk’s youth maybe?

And the first thing is getting a bit old.

He was amazing in Capote.

Hmmm, two aussies so far. Cool cool!

Thanks Charles!

First is fun…its just one post out of a few hundred…..just let first go.

cool, interesting to see these guys on screen

“Hemsworth is known in his native Australia for his role in the soap opera Home and Away, for which he won a Logie Award (an Australian Emmy). ”

He won a Loogie? lol, those crazy Aussies.

“Logie” after John Logie Baird, the inventor of television…
And yes those awards are a stupid as they sound. ;) They’re voted for by idiots, mostly, who seem to watch nothing but soaps and talk shows.
I personally wouldn’t have thought that Chris Hemsworth could act his way out of a wet paper bag, given what little I’ve seen of his “acting” on Home and Away… But I guess that there must be something there :S

2. The ‘First’ thing getting a bit old.

Thank you!! That is so frickin’ annoying! Say something, an opinion, a comment, anything–but please stop saying ‘First!’ What is this? Sixth grade?

Tenth!!!! Or Eleventh depending on when this actually posts.

Yes, the “first” thing needs to go away.

Anyway, this movie looks like it’s turning into a mega-film. I like that! Can’t wait for the trailers.

Now, lets see some snippets of the Enterprise. That’s what I’m really looking forward to!

TENTH!!

or not…

#1. Why don’t you try for LAST? Now that’s got to be a real challenge.

After 13!

Anyway back to the point, I seemed to remember Clifton on Alias now that I think about, and from what I remember he’s really a terrific actor.

My mouth is watering right now.

re: 10
“Now, lets see some snippets of the Enterprise. That’s what I’m really looking forward to!”

Why? So you can vomit?

seems all good to me :)

Home and AWAY!

I don’t know much about this cast as I tend to NOT watch many current TV shows.
[I’m usually watching Netflix DVDs, or one of the classic movie channels, CNN, Basketball, History Channel, Science Channel, Discovery Channel, etc…]

I just keep hoping that JJ&Co. “get it”…

So far I’m planning to be at the movies on Xmas night, 2008. I hope that I still feel that way next year…

[I will admit for ST-X I waited for the DVD because everything I saw told me it would be OK to wait and I wouldn’t miss anything.]

Why do we always have the same constellation? An evil guy with henchmen? Can’t they do anything alone? We had this over and over again… It is getting old.
And why do the evil guys have to be evil? Why do we always need to have good guys and evil guys?
I realyy hope that one day we will have a story where there are no dark, evil guys who want to kill or destroy… a misunderstodd person who is acting out of desparation and maybe it is revealed that he is right and is not the evil guy at all!
But I think this would be too much thinking for average moviegoers and Star Trek fans ;)

19. There’s been just as many of those antagonists you describe throughout all the incarnations of Star Trek. V’ger wasn’t evil in STTMP & neither was the vessel trying to communicate with the whales in STIV. If you look at it, even the Borg are not evil. They simply assimilate as a means of survival just as a lion does not discriminate on what it might kill to eat.

OMG I’m Australian and let me tell you they’ve chosen one of the worst actors in our country I’m so embarrassed.

More than likely these characters will only have a line or two the entire movie. Acting ability is probably not required for their roles for the most part.

By the way, I watched The Deadly Years last night, and Sulu said that he had served with Captain Kirk for 3 years. Now this might not fit within the timeline for the new movie, but I really don’t give a flip for those small continuity details. Just tell a good story.

Furthermore, I don’t get this FIRST business. It reminds me of when we used to line up to go to the potty in Kindergarten. It was a very big deal to be leading the line, the highlight of one’s life. If being first on a message board is a big thrill for people, I guess that tells you something about them.

Besides, everyone knows that being 22nd is much cooler. You have to time it just right. Plus there is the phrase Catch 22, there are 22 players on the football at the same time, it’s two hours short of 24 hours, and the numbers 2 2 sound like Tutu. Which is just a fun word to say. For example, if Dorothy’s dog wore one, Glenda the good witch would have said, “Toto in the Tutu too.”

(rolls eyes)

#22 has clearly become the new #1. bravo.

#21 Meh

At least you didn’t get Simon Pegg pretending to be a Willie the gardener ‘Scotty’… ;)

13. Spock’s Brain – November 14, 2007

#1. Why don’t you try for LAST? Now that’s got to be a real challenge.

Yeah, and try to post last on one of the long “Bring Back Shatner As Kirk” threads. That would be the ULTIMATE challenge!

More on topic, forget the henchmen, bring on the REDSHIRTS!

Off topic:

Wanna see some pretty cool, HIGH DEFINITION shots of the Earth as seen from the Moon’s perspective, just taken by a Japanese probe?…

http://www.jaxa.jp/press/2007/11/20071113_kaguya_e.html

As to these two actors, as far as their ‘look’ goes, they seem okay to me…but it’s the look of J.J.’s ‘Enterprise’ that I worry about…

Anthony, I’ve never spoken directly to you — GREAT site, BTW — but how about whenever you post a new article, you also go ahead and post the first comment too, which shall always read, “FIRST!”

Of course, then everyone will fight to be “SECOND!”

Just remember, Everyone, second place is first loser.

Scott B. out.

P.S. The above actor playing the henchman has a nice Larry “Decius/Stonn” Montaigne look to him, don’t you think?

#27 – Cool pictures. Thanks for sharing. Of course, whenever I see a shot like that the first thing I think of is, “is that the future location of Moonbase Alpha?”

#19:” An evil guy with henchmen? Can’t they do anything alone?”

Because the core of drama is people interacting with one another, not shooting at one another.

At worst, the villain needs someone to explain his plan to – but at best, the way a character treats the people around them tells us a great deal more about who they are than any other technique available to playwrights or filmmakers.

Well, I’m guessing if Clifton Collins is a general, Eric Bana’s Nero must be Praetor.

Collins was great in Capote. Excellent actor.

We saw Romulans in Nemesis. I have to admit I’m not too excited about them being re-used in this movie. Oh well, hopefully Abrams knows what he’s doing. I remain optimistic.

Henchmen are vital if you are going to take on a group of people you need an army and a leader. An army of one won’t cut it.

Who said they were “evil”. No man ever does anything others consider “wrong” without feeling right and totally justified.

If there reasoning is the destruction of the the Federation via wiping out Kirk, then there justification is in strengthening their expansionist empire.

Someones bad guy is nearly always another persons Hero. Look at Hitler. Many considered him evil. But that was REAL LIFE and MILLIONS followed him!

Nothing’s ever black and white, and no ones seen the script to say that these guys are portrayed as anything but protagonists yet.

I don’t think the use of Romulans is a problem at all. I don’t think we saw enough of them in the TOS era.

#34 we barely saw the Romulans in Nemesis it was mainly Shinzon and the Remans. The Romulans were little more than a cameo.

Hey we’ve seen Klingons, technically, in every single Star Trek film, and humans too.

Romulans and Klingons WITH Bumpy Heads!

I’m all for Romulans being the villians in the movie for once.

Sexiest!

What makes everyone think the bad guys are ROMULANS? No one has said so officially as far as I know and speculation is just as bad as assuming without some facts to support it. I am still not sure this movie will fly off the ground let alone deep space. Pretty good cast (well, I still don’t get Wynona the shplifter) but then a lot of movies have had excellent casts and made a lousy movie.
Also, what is this Trekkie obsession with wanting every single character from TOS? Another thing, don’t expect Kirk to go from Leutenant to Captain in a 2 hour movie; unless he gets a battlefield promotion which I doubt. You people really crack me up!

Matthew, you crack us up. Right in the article it says (and it has been reported before) that the villivan, Nero, is a Romulan.

The Romulans were misused in Nemesis. I think that the Romulans also make a great foil and haven’t, to this day, been used to their potential.

And can we please change the stupid Nosferatu Remans? That had to be the dumbest thing in Star Trek ever. Well, at least to me.

“villian”

Jesus, I need coffee.

#27 – Clearly those photos are fake. There are no stars in the background.

Looking forward to the movie! Looking like a great cast!

FORTY-FIRST!!! (The actual first number of the forties!)

Well, we had two movies where Kirk was really neither a captain nor an admiral; he and his crew were fugitives.

So if Kirk does not hold an official rank in this movie, it wouldn’t be the first time as far as the movies are concerned.

#42 Chief, would you believe ‘villain’? :) Jesus needs coffee too

I’d like to see the Remans addressed in a simple line by Nero as “We put them back in their cages.” The idea of him being the post-Shinzon praetor is a great idea… especially if Spock has been working with him on the reunification….

It makes sense that if Nero learns from Spock how vital Kirk was. “Tell me of this Kirk you served with a century ago.”

And Spock, nearing Bendii syndrome age, doesn’t pick up on Nero’s plan. Or perhaps Ayel is a Reman with the same mental powers the Viceroy had and forces a meld with Spock, learning of the Federation’s collection of methods of travelling through time (Guardian or Orb of Time, or the slingshot, or the Orb of Time or whatever — IT DOESN”T HAVE TO BE SHOWN, it can just be telegraphed… thus removing the Harlatan factor)…

Having been the source of information for Nero might be the motivating factor for Old Spock (or “Cousin Selek” as he ought to call himself) to enlist Young Spock to help stop Nero’s interference with Kirk… Young Spock and Kirk never need to know Old Spock’s real identity… “Selek” works fine.

It’s all starting to come together, eh?

OK, I concede.

I know that no-one remembers, but it’s here in the archives if anyone cares… but I predicted a couple of months ago that this story would reflect “Yesteryear” in that old Spock and young Spock interact via the Gaurdian, and that it would be similar.

I still might be right, according to the leaked plot details.

who is this guy and what’s with the smarmy look on his face in that picture?

Seriously, I don’t know who most of these poeple are, but I have faith in JJ & Co. Alias rocked, Lost rocks…good enough for me.

Now I only wish they’d cast Jen Garner.

this guy looks like Mr. Pete, if you don’t know who that is, trust me you don’t want to know, lol.

“#42 Chief, would you believe ‘villain’? Jesus needs coffee too”

Thanks for watching my back there, sport. Whatever they do with the Remans, if they do anything at all, I just hope that they don’t look like they’ll turn into bats and sleep in coffins during the day.

I can’t get over all of this primitive hatred towards Evil Henchman — I thought we had all evolved, but I guess not. Actually, I’m a reformed Evil Henchman, been to all the meetings, and I have the card to prove it. It’s this bias towards Evil Henchman that turns people into Evil Henchman in the first place. If they got some love, they wouldn’t be Evil Henchman! So just back off already!!

So before you bash those EH’s out there, remember that they were all cute babies at some point and somebody was probably their mother (at least for a few minutes). Besides, if it weren’t for EH’s, movies wouldn’t have throw dummies to fall off the sides of buildings, targets for the good guy to shoot at, or body parts to be spewn all over the place in explosions. It’s a hard life, I tell ya, and trying to get Worker’s Comp coverage is just nearly impossible nowdays.

Just think about it.
