Shatner – Cooler Than The Fonz – Not As Big As Lucy November 13, 2007

by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: Shatner , trackback

William Shatner hasn’t said anything about not being in the new movie in the last couple of days, but he can still make news. The Shat made the list of ‘50 Greatest TV Icons’ put together by TV Land and Entertainment Weekly. More details below

Shatner came in at #18 on the Icon list, ahead of names such as Kermit the Frog, Jon Stewart and Henry Winkler (The Fonz from Happy Days). Johnny Carson came in at number one and Lucille Ball was number two (who, as owner of Desilu Studios, was partially responsible for the creation of Star Trek). No other Trek vets made the Top 50, but Kelsey Grammer (aka Frasier aka Captain Bateman – TNG: “Cause and Effect”) came in at #66.

The “50 Greatest TV Icons” special airs on TV Land on Friday the 16th of February. More info at TV Land.

Great, he should be up there!

2. VOODOO - November 13, 2007

#1

He should also be in the new movie

3. I AM THX-1138 - November 13, 2007

I have an inside source that tells me that the star that is on the walk of fame is a temporary.

The new one will feature wings and it plays the theme to T.J. Hooker when you step on it.

4. Richard Daystrom - November 13, 2007

I’m not giving up on a “SUPRISE” at the end of the new movie.

5. mattniss - November 13, 2007

#18, huh? He would have cracked the top ten if not for “T.J. Hooker”.

6. James Heaney - November 13, 2007

Heh. I always get a kick out of seeing the quote from Five-Minute “Return of the Archons” as it continues to spread around the ‘net. FiveMinute.net, peole!

Excuse me, now; I have to go to a zoo where rabid Trekkies are locked up in front of a large screen. One might even call it a menagerie.

7. Alex - November 13, 2007

Charity, the Shat says? The Bajoran war orphans, I suppose (minus the 5% compensation for expenses, of course)… :-D

8. Classic trek - November 13, 2007

deserves to be in there and deserves to be in the new movie.
richard daystrom #4 i hope your right. someone else said that to me the other day too :o)

#2

If half the rumors about the new movie are true, the Shat can consider himself lucky of not be in it.

10. JBS - November 13, 2007

Hey, how come Spock didn’t make the list? I demand a recount!

11. Ripped shirt Kirk - November 13, 2007

#10

Only shows that if anyone, kirk should be the main focus of the new movie and Shatner should also be in it.

12. dalek - November 13, 2007

I actually entered this for fun via the website having no idea Shatner was in it. It was a toss up for me The Fonz VS Shatner; of course I’m more of a Trek than Happy Days dan.

#9 What puzzles me about the plot is we already have Kirk die a horrible death which is a big stab in the gut for me as a fan. But they go and add ANOTHER death for Kirk earlier in his life, and ignore the one that a lot of people are still not happy about.

The lack of hope now the script is locked is decreasing and if the script is locked THEY have a definite answer — so the silence is to either avoid negative publicity, or to avoid revealing a surprise (the latter tho, if older Kirk is in the script, aint gonna be held secret given the current state of leaks)

All I’ll say is that If Spock doesn’t save Kirk’s future as well as his past; its not the Spock I know lol

13. Gene Coon was the Better Gene - November 13, 2007

That list, like most lists, is bogus. Look at where some of the top names ended up, and you can debate for hours. Well, minutes. Carson is definitely #1, but Oprah is ahead of Jackie Gleason? Roseanne beat out Dick Van Dyke? Calista Flockhart, John Ritter, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Sarah Jessica Parker make the list, but Jack Klugman, Tony Randall, Tom Selleck, Leonard Nimoy and Art Carney don’t? What kind of alternate universe am I in?

As I said; bo-gus, BS

#4 Big surprise has been my position all along. Hope we’re right!

14. Richard Daystrom - November 13, 2007

#12

That is what I have said for a while. If Spock goes back in time to save Kirk from the Romulans and doesn’t drop a hint to young Spock about what happens in “Generations” to Kirk would be a waste and totally stupid for a logical Vulcan.

15. Tim Handrahan - November 13, 2007

“If there was that much at stake, Spock would have found a way!”

“You come back for me”
“You would have done the same for me.”

“If I hadn’t tried, the cost would have been my soul.”

All quotes from STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK.

Time to return the favor:

BRING BACK WILLIAM SHATNER AS CAPTAIN JAMES T. KIRK!

16. YUBinit - November 13, 2007

#18 huh? JJ… hint hint THIS is Kirk and your retarded. Now let’s see The Enterprise with landing skids, wings, and the Omega 13 cannon already!

17. Pragmaticus - November 13, 2007

20. Tim Handrahan - November 13, 2007

No, the trainwreck was Nemesis!

Now is the time to make things right!

21. dalek - November 13, 2007

#19 lol there was nothing wrong with this thread until post 16. A few of us were having a discussion about older Kirk and the latest plot details.

22. YUBinit - November 13, 2007

Sunflower seeds and a coke for me, and starting up ST:TMP to get me some REAL Trek. ;)

23. Richard Daystrom - November 13, 2007

Spock: If I may be so bold, it was a mistake for you to accept promotion. Commanding a starship is your first, best destiny; anything else is a waste of material.
Kirk: I would not presume to debate you.
Spock: That is wise. Were I to invoke logic, however, logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
Kirk: Or the one.
Spock: You are my superior officer. You are also my friend. I have been and always shall be yours

This says it all!

24. YUBinit - November 13, 2007

Please no need to let any statement interfere with a good conversation. Ignore the man behind the curtin… JJ IS THE GREAT AND POWER OZ! ;)

25. navamske - November 13, 2007

“Lucille Ball was number two (who, as owner of Desilu Studios, was partially responsible for the creation of Star Trek).”

Lucille Ball’s other connection to Star Trek: She was the mother-in-law of Laurence Luckinbill (Sybok).

Shatner will be in the movie and it will go down as the best kept secret in the history of Hollywood!!!

27. Anonymous Gasbag - November 13, 2007

True. Perhaps I jumped the gun with that observation.

High five to the Shat.

28. navamske - November 13, 2007

#12: “If Spock goes back in time to save Kirk from the Romulans and doesn’t drop a hint to young Spock about what happens in ‘Generations’ to Kirk would be a waste and totally stupid for a logical Vulcan.”

SPOILERS FOR A TREK NOVEL

Preventing Kirk’s “death” on the Enterprise-B could have some interesting consequences. In the novel “The Engines of Destiny,” 24th-century Scotty decides to go back in time and pull Kirk out of the E-B just after Kirk executes the maneuver that saves the ship, figuring there’s no harm in removing him from the timeline (and taking him to the 24th century) since he’s just going to die anyway. The minute he pulls Kirk out, they find themselves in an alternate universe in which the Borg control most of the Alpha quadrant, including Earth. The explanation is that only Picard, because of his connection to the Borg, could defeat them in the events of “First Contact” — but unless Kirk is in the Nexus and available to help defeat Soran, Picard stays in the Nexus and thus isn’t around during the events of “First Contact.” I’m not saying it’s a good novel, but (within the context of sci-fi and Trek of course) the premise is reasonably plausible.

29. Oregon Trek Geek - November 13, 2007

William Shatner should be #1 on every list ever made about anything. Top 50 production cars ever made? #1–William Shatner. Top 100 female opera sopranos of all time? #1–William Shatner. And so on. :D

Why keep such an icon out of this film?

Shatner wants in. The writers claim to want Shatner in and still this icon is still not in this movie.

I don’t get it.

This film will not be complete for me without William Shatner as Kirk.

32. chain of command - November 13, 2007

34. Daoud - November 13, 2007

Logically, the list was made while Nimoy was photographing the rarely seen, obese Harlatans of Forever… and as a result, ceased to exist in the timeline.

Thus, when the Harlatans of Forever slither back into their hole, Nimoy will return to the timeline, and Spock will sit atop Kirk. Sitting on the Edge of Forever….

And show up on the list again, too.

35. Batts - November 13, 2007

“There are always possibilities” It could be a very surprise ending with adding Shatner to the movie. Achance for Captain Kirk to go out with style if he goes out at all.

Using the principle Stallone wanted for Rocky, one more chance to do it right!! My Opiniion…

36. Andy Patterson - November 13, 2007

Although Shatner is king…………if you’re putting Victoria Principal on any list she’s tops for me. What a poor fool Andy Gibb was. “Give up the drugs or me” is the quote from her. He gave up her. Shame.

41. reptileboy - November 13, 2007

If Arnie can be mooted as a possible candidate, why can’t the coolest Starship Captain ever not be given a chance. Laws can be changed. And if Shatner wanted them, they would be.

That’s what happens when twits who have not the faintest idea of television before 1990 have a say in these things.

I’m from Jersey and have fond childhood memories of New York’s channel 11 and their 11 pm to 1 am weekly line up.

The Odd Couple followed by The Honeymooners and finally Star Trek!

Good times!

56. Red Shirt - November 13, 2007

Roberto! Is it not too early to start some blogging from the set? Many of us are digging J.J.’s Cloverfield viral marketing tactics…why not something for the Trekkers? And where the heck is our cast photo in full wardrobe? Do we have to wait for an EW to debut that sometime after the first of the year? Many thanks, and remember the “needs of the many.” We ARE the many!!!

57. jonboc - November 13, 2007

67. Ron Mosher - November 14, 2007

I can hear Shat’s ego growing……..as if it’s not big enough.

68. Olympus1979 - November 14, 2007

Shatner is great, end of story. Hes greedy you say? So what, in this industry who isnt. He has a big ego you say? At least he has a track record to back it up.

And for those who constantly praise Nimoy for being such a good person (which I believe he is also), remember that his BEST FRIEND is Shatner. so how bad can he really be?

Oh, and there are now WAY too many conflicting stories from every party involved in this situation to believe we know anything. Something is happening, and none of us have a clue what it is. Personally, I prefer it that way :)

The more secrets, the better!!

69. ZoomZoom - November 14, 2007

#18? thats gona hurt The Shat, big time! LOL
So have I correctly understood- Bill is NOT in this new film thing?
Ironic really, cos it sounds like just about EVERY other actor out there is!

I’ve heard a rumour that Joe Pesci is playing the Shore Leave white rabbit. Obviously he’ll be playing it a bit more psychotic than we saw before. He’s going to go back to the 20th century and mate with an ancestor of Kirks pet rabbit. By doing so he will insert the psychotic gene into the line, which will turn little Jimmy’s pet into a mad, bad and dangerous to know fur ball. Will Jimmy survive the onslaught? Will he go on to get command of the back yard back? Will the rabbits hutch have wings? Will the rabbit have pointed ears?
Roll on December ‘08!

70. Ivory - November 14, 2007

I would really suck if Shatner is not in this film.

Why have just the original Spock when the original Kirk wants to be in the film?

It’s like saying lets sign Bud Abbott but not Lou Costello to do the new Abbott + Costello film.

This concept (Guardian of Forever) is so wide open they could easily write Shatner in if they truly wanted him.

I am starting to think they never really wanted him + just said what they did to shut his/Kirk’s fans up.

71. Ivory - November 14, 2007

I agree with who ever said that this film will not be complete w/out Shatner as Kirk.

72. Trek Nerd Central - November 14, 2007

#68. I agree.

On the subject of ego: You show me a performer (or any creative person) who doesn’t have an ego, and I’ll show you a performer without a career. It’s required for the job.

On the subject of greed: You show me a performer (or any creative person) who doesn’t want to get paid what they’re worth, and I’ll show you a performer who never waited tables while living on Kraft macaroni & cheese in a cockroach-infested sublet.

Shatner has an ego? He wants a decent role? He wants to be paid as much as possible? Why the heck wouldn’t he?

73. Trek Nerd Central - November 14, 2007

But. . . re: #71:

I don’t see how we can decide whether the movie’s complete without Kirk if it just started filming. And we haven’t seen it. And we haven’t read the script. Don’t we kind of have to WAIT AND SEE before we pass judgment on it?

74. ZoomZoom - November 14, 2007

#73 nah, it WILL be incomplete without Bill in. Don’t need to see it to know thats true.

75. Ivory - November 14, 2007

If Shatner is not in the film it will be incomplete.

76. Ivory - November 14, 2007

To me the essence of S.T. is Kirk, Spock + McCoy.

Unfortunately, we can’t have D.Kelly in this film, but we can have William Shatner + Leonard Nimoy.

With only 1 of the 2 it seems like the film isn’t complete.

GIVE KIRK A BETTER ENDING THAT FALLING OFF A BRIDGE.

77. Jeffery Wright - November 14, 2007

shats da man, this movie will be a little less special without him, too bad.

78. I am not a merry man! - November 14, 2007

81. Ivory - November 14, 2007

78

I don’t think it will necessarilary tank w/out Shatner (it will live or die on it’s on merits) but the film would be a lot more special if Shatner is in it.

To your point. I do think Shatner would help at the box office. I just wouldn’t say the flm wil flop w/out him.

I really hope they can work something out.

82. I AM THX-1138 - November 14, 2007

84. ZoomZoom - November 14, 2007

#82 where, exactly, did you see the thread going? Its a Shatner story about how big a celebrity His Shatness is, so obviously people can’t quite understand why the powers that be are overlooking his- NOW PROVEN- appeal and how it could help this new movie.

85. I AM THX-1138 - November 14, 2007

This film will probably make box office history without Shatner, but it won’t make ST history.

I love the man. He eats the screen.

But I don’t hunderstand how anyone can pass judgment on a movie without seeing it. Before it’s even been made!

#18? Nice.

Chill about him being in the movie already. I love William Shatner, think he’s a great actor and would love to see him in ST XI, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. Especially with the writer’s strike. Does it really make that big of a difference if he’s in the movie or not? Give ST XI a chance…
If you really need to see more of him, Boston Legal is fabulous… (”Spot the trek reference!” is a really fun game to play during it, too… there’s a whole wikipedia section listing all of them.)

- Several episodes of ”Boston Legal” allude to ”[[Star Trek]]” and its various spin-offs. [[William Shatner]] ([[Denny Crane]]) gained fame for playing the role of Captain [[James T. Kirk]] in the original series and seven of the ten feature films that followed. [[Rene Auberjonois (actor)|Rene Auberjonois]] ([[Paul Lewiston]]) previously appeared as Security Chief [[Odo]] in ”[[Star Trek: Deep Space Nine]]”. Auberjonois also appeared in the film ”[[Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country]]” in the uncredited role of ‘Colonel West’ and in an episode of ”[[Star Trek: Enterprise]]” entitled [[Oasis (Enterprise episode)|"Oasis"]] in the role of ‘Ezral.’ [[John Larroquette]] (Carl Sack) appeared in the film ”[[Star Trek III: The Search for Spock]]” as ‘Maltz’.
- * [[Jeri Ryan]], the actress who played [[Seven of Nine]] on ”[[Star Trek: Voyager]]”, appeared on two episodes of the second season of Boston Legal: (Spring Fever) and BL: Los Angeles.
- * In the second episode of the third season, “New Kids on the Block”, the husband of a murder victim, a judge, is played by [[Armin Shimerman]], who appeared along with [[Rene Auberjonois (actor)|Rene Auberjonois]] on ”[[Star Trek: Deep Space Nine]]” as [[Quark (Star Trek)|Quark]]. The pair have a scene together and reference the idea that they are old friends.
- * In the tenth episode of the third season, “The Nutcrackers”, [[Michelle Forbes]] guest stars as an attorney. Forbes had played a recurring role as [[Ensign Ro Laren]] on ”[[Star Trek: The Next Generation]]”. [[Clyde Kusatsu]], who played Admiral Nakamura in ”[[Star Trek: The Next Generation]]”, also appeared in “The Nutcrackers” as a judge.
- * In several of the third season episodes, four ”[[Star Trek]]” regular cast members appear together: [[William Shatner]], [[Rene Auberjonois]] ([[Odo]] in ”[[Deep Space Nine]])”, [[Armin Shimerman]] (the [[Ferengi]] barkeep [[Quark]] in ”[[Deep Space Nine]]”), and [[Ethan Phillips]] ([[Neelix]] on ”[[Star Trek: Voyager]]”).
- * In the Season Two episode “Finding Nimmo”, while Denny and Alan are on a fishing trip to British Columbia, Alan refers to a sea-lice ailment suffered by some local fish as ‘cling-ons’; Denny, as though recalling something from vague, distant memory comments “Did you say [[Klingons]]?”
- * In the Season Two episode “The Cancer Man Can”, Denny tries out a new cell phone. The clamshell-style phone flips open and makes the exact sound made by the old ”Star Trek” communicators.
- * In the Season Two episode “There’s Fire”, Denny’s new wife Beverly suggests that they move to [[Hawaii]]. Denny asks her, “What am I supposed to do? Beam myself to Boston every morning?” (a reference to using the transporter system on ”Star Trek”, commonly referred to as “beaming”).
- * In the ninth episode of the second season, Denny shoots a homeless man named Kirk, another reference to Shatner’s ”Star Trek” character. Later in the episode Alan Shore calls to Mr. Kirk while seemingly speaking to Denny.
- * In episode 14 of the first season, “‘Til We Meat Again”, Alan makes reference to Paul establishing dominion. In ”Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”, Rene Auberjonois’ character Odo belonged to a race of people who led a political and military regime known as the Dominion. It is unclear whether this reference is intentional.
- * In the Season Two episode “There’s Fire”, [[Patti Yasutake]] plays Dr. Claire Simon. [[Patti Yasutake]] is best known for her portrayal of [[Alyssa Ogawa]] in ”[[Star Trek: The Next Generation]]”, ”[[Star Trek Generations]]”, and ”[[Star Trek: First Contact]]”. She had also originally auditioned for the role of [[Keiko O'Brien]] on ”[[Star Trek: Deep Space 9]]”.
- *In an argument between Denny and Paul over who controls the company most, Denny calls himself ‘Captain of the ship’.
- * In the Season 3 finale, while walking through a crowd of reporters clamoring for a quote, Denny Crane says he once captained his own spaceship, a reference to Captain Kirk’s [[USS Enterprise NCC-1701]] of [[Star Trek]] fame.
-
- The following actors have appeared at least once in both ”Boston Legal” and somewhere in the Star Trek Universe: [[William Shatner]], [[Rene Auberjonois]], [[Jeri Ryan]], [[Christopher Carroll]], [[Scott MacDonald (actor)|Scott MacDonald]], [[Armin Shimerman]], [[Patti Yasutake]], [[Jack Shearer]], [[Michelle Forbes]], [[Steven Anderson]], [[Thomas Kopache]], [[Robert Foxworth]], [[Leon Russom]], [[Daniel Roebuck]], [[Leslie Jordan]], [[Richard Riehle]], [[Gregory Itzin]], [[Art Chudabala]], [[Lou Antonio]], [[Megan Gallagher]], [[Corbin Bernsen]], [[Andy Milder]], [[Jennifer S. Yeah, I noticed my link didn’t work. Apparently TV trivia is not an acceptable topic in Wiki [GUFFAW!]

And AFA Wikipedia in general, here’s a good definition to remember:

Wikipidiot (n): Someone who relies on Wikipedia as a sole source of reliable information.

Memory Alpha excepted, of course! :-)

Peace. Live long and prosper.

Captain Kirk is the icon. The Shat was great in his day, but the character lives on in the prequel (of sorts). Shatner is old and fat, with no business in a Star Fleet uniform (Maybe he could play Cyrano Jones!).

107. Harry Ballz - November 18, 2007

The Shat is very popular and all that
Even though he’s grown old and quite fat
Of his accomplishments much has been said
Most of which have gone to his head
Still, his career has had more lives than a cat!
