Nimoy Readying His Return As Spock December 3, 2007
by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: Nimoy, ST09 Cast , trackback
Over the weekend Leonard Nimoy made a surprise appearance at Lightspeed Fine Art’s 8th Annual Celebrity Charity Benefit in Orange County, CA. According to a report at StarTrek.com Nimoy joined Trek alums Robert Picardo, Nana Visitor, Garrett Wang, and Connor Trinneer signing autographs and helping with the auction. The actor also told the crowd that he will soon be donning the pointy ears for the new Star Trek feature currently in production.
Nimoy talked about his preparations to play the character of Spock again for the first time in over a decade:
I was on the set of the new ‘Star Trek’ movie a couple of days ago. I was doing some tests on my makeup and my wardrobe. The movie is gonna look fantastic, and we’ve got some wonderful people at bat and a great script. I start filming in about two weeks, and then we will be in the theaters Christmas ‘08, so I assume you’re all looking forward to it. I certainly am.

Can’t Wait!!
First!
first :)
:(
Doesn’t it just make you happy to hear him say that?
Fourth is good!
Or 5th
what is it with this “FIRST” stuff? I don’t get it. say something intelligent or don’t say anything. who cares what number you are…give insight, give your thoughts, but stop with the “FIRST” comments. I don’t even look at your names, i just skip to real comments.
I’m looking forward to seeing Nimoy on the big screen again….
…almost as much as I look forward to seeing SHATNER!!!!
Hahahahahaha!!!!!!!!
It’s ironic that Nimoy, playing a Vulcan, may just have the last laugh! :)
#7 I look at their names- as I then know to take any future posts they may make just a little less seriously.
I’m so excitedddd!!!!! :D I can’t wait for the first spy photo’s of Nimoy as Spock again.
I can’t wait to hear somebody call Spock by his first name…..Timmy! :)
Awesome stuff…very exciting to know that THE mr. spock will be in action in as little as 2 weeks. Wish Christmas would get here so we can count down from the final year. And to those with their “First’s”…nobody cares, leave something worth reading or go away
It’s going to be great to see Leonard Nimoy back in action.
7, 13:
I’m with you. I have been first a few times and not only did I not trumpet it, but it made me the first in that thread to overlook something which a later poster pointed out.
Anthony–how about changing the rules that all posts that even mention being first are deleted so we can stop wading through this muck once and for all?
I love that in the photo above he’s wearing a bright blue V-neck shirt with black shirt underneath — looks like he’s in his old uniform (with a jacket over it)!
Come on JJ get Mr Shatner in there too !!!
I hope he grows the sideburns even though old Spock is probably not in Starfleet.
I want pix NOW!
Peace. Live long and prosper.
The Vulcanista }:-|
Oh, I can’t wait!:)
Leonard’s back in town as Mr. Spock!:)
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah I agree with #7 #10 #13 #15. This first bs reminds me of little kids in preschool running to a pole the first one there says first,,, and then we all go inside for cool aid.
^
All you first ers.. Its lame….we think your infants.
^
Evolve….for sake of mankind.
I’m looking forward to the movie. I hope it doesn’t involved old Spock saving a young Kirk from 24th century Romulans. That won’t make any sense to me considering that he already bit the bullet in Generations.
Luckily for Leonard Nimoy, they’ve just discovered a new drug that will keep the ears on an old man very pointing and firm — Vulcangra.
#12: It would have to be Timmqqqqqqqqqqqy, since his name is unpronounceable.
Of course, we could just say the q’s are silent. Hmmm…
yay!!!
#24 — No, it’s spelled T’ym93*i’iy, but the 93* is silent.
It’s really sad to think that McCoy is all decomposed and Scotty is all burned up, but at least we still have Nimoy to carry that classic Trek flag into the 21st century.
That’s “alumni”, not “alums”.
I can’t wait to see him in costume again. It’s been too long.
re 4
“Doesn’t it just make you happy to hear him say that?”
What else WOULD he say?
re: “First” Whiners
It’s no big deal.
30- I’m with you Stanky. Big deal. I can’t imagine why anyone would bother to be SO troubled by such things and then expend the entergy to write a post about how something so trivial gets on their nerves. Very anal to be sure.
No babies or animals are are harmed when typing the word “first”.
No harm no foul, life goes on.
32nd!
What is the carbon footprint of doing the “first” thing? You will receive your bill in the mail soon. >;>}
If Leonard’s satisfied so am I.
#22… but he dies in Generations a long time after. Surely Spock would go back to save the younger Kirk if he learned of a time-travel plot to kill him before he did all his exploits.
It’s amazing. We haven’t seen Nimoy as Spock since TNG’s “Unification”. It’s going to be a great experience to see him onscreen one more time.
When I first heard about this movie and the recasting of all the TOS crew, I was concerned… But if Leonard Nimoy is willing to participate, then I know it will be OK. I cannot imagine Leonard agreeing to be involved in anything less than a quality feature, given his long and well-documented concern for the integrity of Star Trek overall and Spock in particular.
Is Leonard in costume in that pic? Heh.
#31:”No babies or animals are are harmed when typing the word “first”.”
Every time you post “First,” God kills a kitten.
Please, think of the kittens.
Everyone who has a problem with “first”, get over it. Any of you who’ve ever visited aintitcool.com should know about the whole “first” thing. Stop wasting space with your complaining. This is supposed to be for comments regarding the story in question, but like so many chatrooms out there it becomes a place for people to yack about anything and everything. Please, remember what this space is for.
That said, I’m looking forward to the movie more and more each day. My only real concern is what the Enterprise is going to look like. I love the cast and what I’ve seen of the costumes and I think Leonard Nimoy’s comments regarding the film are extremely encouraging. I don’t recall him having quite so many nice things to say about any of the other films with the possible exception of The Voyage Home and The Undiscovered Country.
Since Leonard said it was a great script, it is going to be a great Star Trek movie!
Spies, post the pics here! :)
I cannot wait to go to watch this great movie! :)
@39 - must be a lot of dog lovers here, then! ;)
What’s with this “Spock’s first name is Timmy?” Jane Wyatt herself once said that it was HAROLD!
Mother knows best, y’all.
As for the movie: “Leonardo locutus, causa finita.” (Leonard says so, case closed.) It’s goona be great!
I like how Leonard (I’ve been watching him on tv since I was born Im allowed to call him that) had been limiting his Trek movie parts until something he deemed worthy came along. That should be a sign that this will kick butt!
So Leonard is digging the sets and costumes and makeup?
Very cool.

“I cannot imagine Leonard agreeing to be involved in anything less than a quality feature, given his long and well-documented concern for the integrity of Star Trek overall and Spock in particular.”
Star Trek V, anyone??!!
Thank you all for keeping Timmy alive. If I hear the name uttered in the film, my life shall be complete.
OK, maybe that’s overstating it, but how cool for me would that be. I liked Anthony’s suggestion. T’meh.
“What else WOULD he say?”
Well, judging from the past (i.e., GENERATIONS), if he wasn’t enthused by the script or other aspects of the production I expect he would say, diplomatically, something on the order of, “The producers approached me to play the part of Spock earlier this year for the upcoming Trek film. I had some concerns about script, however, and we were unfortunately not able to come to terms on that. I wish them and the film every success.”
That’s quite a far cry from signing on to a film after a ten-year hiatus from acting and enthusicastically endorsing the script. Nimoy’s own artistic judgements aren’t infallible, of course. But he’s clearly excited about participating in this project, and for my money that’s the best omen this film has going for it thus far.
There is a new rumor about the Big E on Trekweb and the link is:
http://trekweb.com/articles/2007/12/04/Rumor-Mill-New-Redesigned-Starship-Enterprise-Revealed-.shtml
Am I the only one who’s less than excited about Leonard Nimoy being in this movie? Nothing against him or the original Spock…I like the both just fine…I just wish this wasn’t a time-travel story. Time travel has been done to death in sci-fi and Trek. How about we focus on the *new* and tell a completely *original* TOS story?
Just sayin’.
49.I hope that image is a hoax.
Guys, just to let you know, the “First” posting habbit is not just here and aintitcool.com, its a common message board thing through out internet culture. It gives some people kicks to get in first because it means they were ontop of the story when it was posted. Why does it bother so many of you?
#50 “How about we focus on the *new* and tell a completely *original* TOS story?”
If “new TOS stories” are what we’ll all be seeing for the next however many years, then I consider it very appropriate to kickstart this new era while simultaneously bringing closure to the old. So I welcome the return of Nimoy, and would welcome the return of he AND Shatner even more!
#52-”its a common message board thing through out internet culture.”
Internet culture. That’s a good one.
If typing “first” as the initial poster means you are on top of the story, then you should also type a relevant comment. Just typing first makes you a game show contestant that can hit the button quickest but offer no answer.
But if looking like a stupid tw#t is how some get their jollies, then I say “Have at ‘er, Tiger!”
#54, There is an internet culture, and it growing in size and influence. You might want to check it out, its your futre, like it or not.
“internet culture’
Hmmm, I once grew a culture in a petri dish for science class………..is that the environment they cultivated the “internet” one in?? Just askin’….:)
#55-And there is a spell-check in your future. You might want to check it out. Like it or not.
The initial comment was a joke. Please debate the rest of my post.
As for me, I find the definition of culture to be different than yours. But I imagine that there are degrees to everything.
#41
IMO, a script alone doesn’t make a good film. The script is just the clay the actors must bring life to. Nimoy definitely is able to do so; the other person who would be able to perform the required transformation isn’t even in the film yet, and as regards the young ones - it remains to be seen if they’ll be able to cope with the task.
The funny thing is that the comments talking about the “First” posters are exponentially greater time wasters than the ones who actually commit the offense.
I have to ignore one word when someone posts “First.”
In this thread I have to ignore 30 posts because of the reaction. Tell me…who is causing the most clutter?
If no one reacts to a child’s behavior, it soon goes away, or loses its power. Let’s act like adults and just ignore it, rather than stoop to their level and create an even larger problem.
Rich, your parenting skills need a bit of dusting off. Ignoring a child’s behavior is like giving him carte blanche.
And you have also contributed to the clutter. I still stand by what I said about the “firsters”.
Anyhoo, just how pointy are old Spock’s ears going to be, anyway?
Am I the “first” to ask the question? :)
#60: I think you are misunderstanding my statements. I agree with you regarding the “firsters.” However there is nothing we can do about it, so can we please stop compounding the problem by commenting on it? It is simply a fact of Internet life, and name calling will get us nowhere. Just let it be. This is all I am saying. No personal attacks were intended, and my apologies if you took my comments in the wrong way. This is my last post on the subject. Best to you and to all.
No offense taken, pally. I will probably bitch about this in the future, so no promises. Posting comments on the internet, as a whole, has gotten me nowhere (the Timmy thing was cool, though). But I do try to say something, or have an opinon. What I like to do is jump a topic so I can be first and actually have something to say concerning the subject matter. Just to spoil someone elses attempt at being first. I am petty like that.
And Harry, come over here and I’ll show you how pointy Spock’s ears are going to be.
I think it’s great that we’re going to get to see Nemoy as Spock on the big screen again.
What they should be doing though, is a Captain Sulu of the Excelsior movie.
Side note: people complaining about the “First” stuff are as annoying and useless as the people saying “first”.
Take THIS message for example. I am in no way helping or inspiring or making people laugh…
THX-1138……….as the old saying goes, “you’ve got a point, but if you wear a hat, nobody’ll notice!”
sixty-sixth
Sorry, I did’nt mean that really
Harry, of all the people here, I really think you’d be the one best suited to tell us just how pointy old guys are able to get.
46. Captain Fantastic - December 4, 2007
“I cannot imagine Leonard agreeing to be involved in anything less than a quality feature, given his long and well-documented concern for the integrity of Star Trek overall and Spock in particular.”
Star Trek V, anyone??!!
I don’t know if this is getting too far off the topic at hand (though I suppose the “first” chatter is worse), but the situation with the Star Trek franchise was much different then than now. Star Trek IV was a huge hit, ST:TNG was new to the airwaves and going strong, and Shatner was signed to direct. Leonard would be in a much better position now to pass on a new ST movie than he would have been then. How would it have looked for Leonard to pass on a film that Shatner was going to direct? Pretty damn bad I’d say.
Not to mention that a lot of the problems that plagued Star Trek V did not become apparent till the principal photography was already done and in the can. How could Leonard have known that the effects were going to be terrible (except that shot of the 1701-A hanging in front of the moon is still one of my all-time favorite images), or that the climax was going to get messed up due to budget issues, or that they were going to open in theaters against horrendously strong competition? Sure the script was not the best ever, but Star Trek V could have been better than it was with some help in the postproduction phase. All of which was completely out of Leonard’s control. I wish Shatner would get the green light and get a chance to go back and re-do the effects for V the way Robert Wise did with ST:TMP.
Besides, I actually LIKE Star Trek V. I stand by my statement before, my respect for Leonard Nimoy remains strong.
I AM THX-1138, I apologize for my spelling errors as I am typing fast at work between tasks. However snide remarks about spelling aside,
“If typing “first” as the initial poster means you are on top of the story, then you should also type a relevant comment. Just typing first makes you a game show contestant that can hit the button quickest but offer no answer.
But if looking like a stupid tw#t is how some get their jollies, then I say “Have at ‘er, Tiger!” ”
The part of this you are failing to grasp, is, it is not about the giving of information on the contents of the article. This is a message board, not a piece of note paper or other resource that has a strictly enforced resource limit. There is time and room for article commentary later. Rather it gives information about the person posting. Saying that they were here first after the article posted. Its a tag, or badge, like ranking in a competition. You don’t have to compete in the competition, or like it but it is there and part of the afore mentioned culture. You may feel that they are a “stupid tw#t” but I am sure the feeling is mutual towards a person who doesn’t even try to understand the real meaning of things they are not used to. Learn to understand the world you have to live in.
“IMO, a script alone doesn’t make a good film.”
No, it doesn’t. It’s even possible for a great script to make an awful film in the wrong hands, and a minimal script (e.g. 2001: A Space Oddyssey) to make a great film in the right hands. Such exceptions are, however, rare.
#68 “Harry, of all the people here, I really think you’d be the one best suited to tell us just how pointy old guys are able to get”
Okay, I’ll “rise” to the bait……..even us old farts can still point and shoot when the occasion presents itself…..slow is sometimes better than fast…..and the word “pointy” seems like a misrepresentation…..it’s more along the lines that when I get a “head of steam” going, I worry that if I swing around suddenly, I might club her to death with it!
To put a spin on the old Groucho Marx line, “I wouldn’t want to have a a ‘club’ that would be mistaken for my ‘member’”.
What, too subtle?? :)
#50: I share your distaste for time travel stories, in Trek and elsewhere. Never been to my tastes.
However, if you’re going to put Nimoy-as-Spock into a movie about his younger self, and have him interact with charactersw set in the same time frame as all those younger characters, you’ve got to do time travel. Ig he doesn’t interact (e.g., narrates a flashback) then you don’t.
In any case, Spock has always been my favorite Trek character. Nimoy and the writers continued to build multiple dimensions into his character over the years, more so than in the other characters (even Kirk). The problems and challenges Spock faces, and his responses to them, are, I think, much more human than any facing his colleagues.
(I don’t think Kirk was allowed to grow much beyond the womanizing male blowhard that, in retrospect, he appears to be in many TOS stories. Yes, he was given certain tokens of advancing years. Yes, he was given a son, who was then taken from him. Yes, he had to swallow a bitter pill and make nice with the Klingons. But, the writers usually did not show us how his personality changed in response to those crises.)
#70-”Rather it gives information about the person posting. ”
Yes. That they have nothing to contribute.
#70-”Its a tag, or badge, like ranking in a competition.”
Then I offer my congratulations on their great achievement. Huzzah.
#70- “Learn to understand the world you have to live in.”
I beleive that I do understand it, old saw. I don’t necessarily have to agree with it. Or commend it. But I do feel like looking upon it with the disdain I feel it deserves. If others want to keep mum and just go with the flow, well, then, groovy. Myrth, you don’t know me. You don’t have to like me. I don’t really give a rip. But I think that if you want to comment on this site you should have something more to say than an indication to the rest of us that you are speedy with a five letter word. Take that stuff to AICN where it belongs. I chat on many other boards on differing topics and if some doofus were to jump in at the top with a vapid “first” comment, they would be banned.
The old saying, and forgive me for butchering it so badly, goes something like:
It is better to remain quiet so no one can question your intelligence than it is to open your mouth and confirm that you have none.
THX…..I LUV how you employ British civility while cutting someone off at the knees!! Nicely done, old bean! :)
69. Lyal, on Star Trek V — I think the visual effects problems were a writer’s strike, and just not enough time. Plus using blue screen — Trumbull’s subtle lighting was possible because of his “double pass” motion controlled matting system.
I know The Shat wanted to do a “Director’s Edition”, but Paramount nixed it.
Boy, would THE DAVE SCHOOL of New Voyages do a great job.
Maybe for an HD DVD release, but I think it won’t happen, especially with the new film, nothing to detract.
Anyway, maybe this version will be fun; Transformers was “full of sound and fury”, I expect better things. But don’t have too high hopes.
Interesting pic of Nimoy up above. Looks to me like he’s got a Romulan ‘do going on.
Peace. Live long and prosper.
The Vulcanista }:-|
come on JJ - throw us a spoiler-photo!
Very glad to see Nimoy as Spock again. Sorry to say I won’t miss Shatner as Kirk. He stoppped playing Kirk with Wrath of Khan, and just became a parody. I wouldn’t trust him to play it straight anymore. At least, that’s my opinion. But I’m full of crap and smell badly.
You may smell badly, but you make sense!!!
#79, 80
- But I’m full of crap and smell badly. -
It always makes sense to finish a post with a credible statement.
“But I’m full of crap and smell badly.”
Perhaps these two items are related?
p.s. I apologize to everyone who reads this site for my role in bringing Harry’s “head of steam” into the discussion. BLECH!!
;)
What did you want to hear…..that when you get older, having sex is like trying to shoot pool with a rope?:)
I AM THX-1138, I’m not sure how you have taken me out at the knees as some have said, all you have show is that you are a very elitist person. Being elitist, I’m sorry to say, is not intelligence, its arrogance. If you really wanted to show some wisdom you would not let things like a “first” post bother you.
Cheers
Yep, nice subtle wardrobe choice Mr. Nimoy . . . . WINK! WINK!
Myrth, if you really wanted to show some wisdom, you would not let my annoyance at the “first” posters bother you.
You are correct. Being elitist is not a sign of intelligence. Please present me with evidence as to how I am being an elitist. Perhaps you have questions to your own sense of self that you are super imposing on your perception of me. I have every right to think that people with nothing to say should say nothing.
“Drawing on my fine command of language, I said nothing” :)
