hmmm ok
Is it just me or is he even thinner than last time?
Back to shoulder-roll weight!?
Man, I miss that original crew.
This PIne fellow has his work cut out for him.
Love that they are such good friends.
I wonder if Pine is aware that it took an actor of Stewart’s caliber to replace Kirk.
I wonder if Picard will ever be re-cast.
Nice tribute to Stewart. The two were good together in Generations. Too bad we’ll never see them together as captains again.
oh jesus…can we please not START talking about Patrick’s recasting…not only will it heart my head…but also my heart (as one of those who grew up with TNG).
hurt*
I enjoyed that tribute video, the editing was quite good. I thought it was interesting that there were so many bites and stills from ST:V and so few from TWOK. I wonder if there was a rights and clearances issue… Maybe Paramount charges big bucks to use TWOK footage but they’ll actually pay you to use footage from TFF. LOL. Actually that’s kind of a cheap shot, ST:V wasn’t terrible, it just wasn’t as good as the other TOS films. I liked it better than Insurrection.
They shpuld put Shatner + Stewart in ST XI.
What I meant to say was…
They should put Shatner + Stewart in ST XI.
ST V was not only the WORST of all the trek movies – yes even worse than Nemisis. It is one of the worst movies period.
I remember leaving the cinema on opening night (2 hours of my life that I’ll never get back) and my wife and I were listening to almost everyone remark on how bad it was. I’ll never forget one guy telling his 2 buddies that he thought it was OK. They laughed at him like, and said he couldn’t be serious. I know there are people who eill defend it, and say it was good. I guess they are really able to suspend any possibility of belief. I commend them. I just can’t do it for that mess.
Sorry for the Typo still not eill, and I didn’t mean to leave that “like” in there.
11. “…it is one of the worst movies period.”
Oh come on. Really? Worst movie ever? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it was good, but worst ever? Surely some other clunkers suck worse than that. Ever see Freddie Got Fingered? Talk about 90 minutes you’ll never get back – there was so little comedic material in that they couldn’t make a :30 trailer funny. Or how about Beverly Hills Cop III? Or Jaws 3? How about Basic Instinct 2 or (gah!) the truely awful Batman 4 with George Clooney. I saw every one of these flicks and ALL of them pissed me off far more than ST: V.
Just my 2 quatloos
I can’t believe I left off The Phantom Menace. I was truely pissed leaving the theater after that one.
The last time I walked out on a movie it one an Oscar a few months later, so I don’t bother throwing stones :)
Cool Shatnervision. Classy and nice.
He does look a bit thinner….and for what it’s worth…his hair piece is looking long….I mean….that is ….er ..um……his hair has grown out …a bit like…it’s moving away from denny crane and towards a kirk like length….just sayin….
Fantastic tribute video.
Star Trek V, may have been boring at some ponts but it examined and brought to the big screen the beauty and friendship that made star trek great. The Sub Par special effects were campy but it made it wonderful. It was great.
#16 i got the same impression…the hair….reminds….me of……kirk…
The tribute video made me feel really nostalgic. I miss the original crew…
I love how THE two captains (sorry but Janeway, Archer, and Sisko just don’t cut it for me) of Star Trek are good friends in real life. Very cool.
Where is TekWars? Where are the other sci-fi Shatner works? Bill did had a life outside Trek, so let them show it.
And please, no TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT recast. We will suffer a lot xmas day 2008.
Nice of WS to appreciate Stewart’s participation but unless PS is coming over for another reason, it’s more than giving up a day. He’s living and working in England these days.
As for Trek V, I’ll be reviewing that here soon.
Too much V, not enough TOS or II. The bits of III were nice.
#16 & 19, I must concur. It’s a total Kirk do.
The tribute video was so great. Of course they will favor V, as that was Shatner’s. Those were great clips from a mediocre movie.
I am not saying he’s in it…but …weight loss….kirk hair after YEARS of denny crane short cut……I am just sayin…
Shatner’s a nifty guy… it’s nice to see that he and Stewart (the two captains of the Enterprise) are friends in real life.
Also, watching the tribute clips made me realize what a good movie Generations really was… the beginning was one brilliant and heart-felt tribute to the old film, and the interaction between the two Captains (like the “make a difference” line) was really spot on. If it weren’t for one or two plot holes, and Kirk’s untimely death (which feels strangely ‘tacked on,’ and is clearly more of a studio decision than something flowing out of the story), then it would definitely be one of the best Trek films. Ah well…
Kirk should grow out his hairpiece regardless if he is in the new trek film or not I hate the short look he adopted in 2000 or whenever.
He’s in fighting shape for TJ Hooker 2007 !!! Watch out ….SCUM!!! Hookers on …the case!!!!
Seriously he must be drinking dragon blood he looks a good ten years younger his actual age. It’s dropkickin time!!!
16, 19, 25
Totally agree.
Shatner’s kind words made up for all the BS he was spouting a month ago. Congrats to him for his award.
“jonboc – December 5, 2007
Man, I miss that original crew.”
Yeah, me too jonboc…
Just speaking from my own perspective though; as talented as they all are as Actors (the new crew), there will be some part of it all that just can’t be, nor do I personally feel, should it be reproduced to a tee. It just won’t be. the decades of chemistry just isn’t there. Pine isn’t Shatner, Quinto isn’t Nimoy and as hard as they try, there will be a difference. Different voice, different walks and so on. Thats Okay as far as I’m concerned. I’ve resolved myself to that now.
I still like Sean Connery the best also as Bond, and nobody, absolutely nobody can ever fill his shoes entirely in my mind. I suppose I feel the same about Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty and the rest. I have to face the fact that my generations Kirk is dead and gone with no reprieve. I guess its time for a new generation…
Good thing for DVD’s and good memories.
I have a soft spot for Star Trek V. Might not be the best Trek movie, but its way better than Insurrection or Nemesis.
I just hope we get a special edition of that film in the next few years. Wouldn’t be that hard to replace to ship shots, or fix up the “God” alien at the end. Oh, and get rid of the scene were Scotty bangs his head, out of respect for Jimmy! I would rather use my imagination and believe he was stunned by a phaser.
Congratulations to our collective child-hood hero, William Shatner.
Kirk and Shatner, warts and all, represent the best parts and the parts we would like to work on, in all of us.
In the film or not, I am happy that he get’s his props at THIS time.
hmmmm,, so many hints in that
Come on Shatner,,, where are yaa!!
re: 4
“I wonder if Pine is aware that it took an actor of Stewart’s caliber to replace Kirk.
I wonder if Picard will ever be re-cast.”
Don’t think Kirk was “replaced” or that Stewart holds a candle to Mr. Shatner in regards to being “the” captain.
I know nothing of Mr. Pine, but I can’t imagine any situation in which I will believe in him as being Captain Kirk.
What a wonderful tribute video!
Thanks for sharing that, Anthony.
Peace. Live long and prosper.

My word, that truly was a beautiful tribute. Very touching. Just goes to show the power of Shatner. He will always be the one true Captain.
I think there’s a chance the re-casts will do a respectable job, but there’s no chance they will ever be able to live up to or even replace those classy archetypal role models we know and saw in the tribute. The magic delivered is unique and, therefore, cannot be re-enacted.
10# … I agree. It would be great if they could get Stewart in the new movie to do a cameo as Picard. With most of the TNG cast leaving for new assignments in the last movie, the only TNG actors they would need would be Picard and Worf and Geordi if the Enterprsie-E was involved in transporting Spock to the Guardian (or whatever McGuffin the film uses to get Spock into the past.) Would be a fitting tribute to TNG, and a nice cameo in the film. Its also a good way to get TNG fans who might otherwise skip this to go see the film, knowing their dear Captain is in it too!
Doesn’t matter how hard I try I can never get over how awful the score for ‘Generations’ is. It’s the worst thing about that movie, and it’s a film with a lot wrong with it.
Anyone dissing Shatner’s acting chops should be made to watch the moment when he realises David Marcus is dead. Superb work.
You guys are really letting your nostalgia influence you. Shatner was a hammy actor plain and simple
Its kind of embarrassing really.
Have to disagree. Hammy? Maybe. But with a style all his own–an originality, a uniqueness. For every speech like the Sargon challenge we have ten more which are truly remarkable. Catch his Twilight Zone work as well if you want to get a different perspective–Nick of Time, Nightmare at 20,000 feet. Truth is, those seven TOS actors made us buy the premise and buy the bit. As the guy at the top, Shat more than held his own.
I really disliked parts of V (Scotty’s head banging is one for sure), enjoyed others. But if I never have to hear another similar rendition of Row Your Boat I will die a happy man.
41- Sorry trektacular, you really should watch an actor’s entire body of work before issuing such blanket generalizations.
Certainly, Shatner was capable of what can be percieved as “hammy”. He even delivered some ham on occassion, but he wasn’t a “hammy” actor. More often than not, especially in Trek’s first season,, his performance is rather subtle.
#31- “still like Sean Connery the best also as Bond, and nobody, absolutely nobody can ever fill his shoes entirely in my mind”
Same here, the way I look at it, When those characters were born, they were born into the bodies of Shatner and Nimoy…then as those actors grew so did the characters. 40 years worth of growth to be exact. In my mind, Shatner is Kirk and Nimoy is Spock. Pine and Quinto will simply be playing Kirk and Spock. I’ll reserve my judgement of their effectiveness until after I’ve seen them on screen, but I’ll still be there on opening day and won’t have any problem enjoying the film as long as it delivers the goods.
#41
trektacular, you’re entitled to your own opinion as all of us are. I’ve no problem with that. And as it obviously was Shatner’s partially shown ham acting that contributed to Kirk becoming the hugely iconic and most recognized scifi character (alongside Spock) he is today, eternalized in the minds of people from 4 decades, I’d say: well-done, Shat!
Sorry, I forgot to mention that he’s even being awarded the Jules Verne Lifetime Achievement Award for Ham Acting. ;-)
makes one feel very nostalgic. If only they were making another Trek movie they could give Bill one more shot at playing Kirk. That would be great!
Oh wait, they are making another movie…….
Too much movie stuff in that tribute.
It will be very interesting in ten years time. will this new Trek film give the francise a great boost, with these new actors becoming these characters for a new generation of trek fans e.g. new Doctor Who (yes i know the regeneration aspect makes it a different case) or the Adams Family movies with Raul Julia
or…
If it will be one of those footnote regigs that fails to rock established boat even a little. e.g. the new Dukes of Hazard film, or Starsky and Hutch, or The Munsters Today (Anyone remember that?)
unforgettable times!!mr JJ dont you read history?the original crew will always live in our hearts!thank god i have the original series and the 7 movies!!!!!
STAR TREK !KIRK ,SPOCK,BONES ,SCOTTY ,UHURA,SOULU,CHEKOV….USS NCC 1701!!!!!
Why is it when I watch these shatner videos..that I notice how little shatner smiles. It all kind of seems like a hassle for him to speak about his acting, others, trek ..so fourth..I try to keep an open mind about this stuff…but after each of his sentences.. He sighs or smacks his lips..
I remember back when star trek V was released, We went to a theater the day after and it was showing it on two screens..(most theaters didnt do that back then)..and we found the theater nearly empty. I didnt fall asleep but it was clear that something wasnt right. It wasnt til a couple years ago with the dvd release of STV special edition that I learned about what shatner was able , unable, or what the studio wasnt able or willing to do to make the film complete. Then to learn that the studio still wasnt willing to fix the movie or let shatner fix it. I would be interested if shatner would share his original or updated vision of STV through storyboards.. and dispay them here and let his greatest fans have a look and give our opinion. Then he can take what he learns here and again bring it before the powers that be at paramount. then maybe we will all finally get to see STV for what it was meant to be and lift it out of the Worst Trek List.. same goes for Nemesis. All they have to do is reshoot patrick stewart as shinzon..Stewart with a long beard would work nicely..I have no solution for insurrection sadly….:(
Trek 5 was great.
Hmm…not so hot effects…kinda like the TV series. It mostly centered around Kirk, Spock and McCoy and how they are like family to one another…kinda like the TV series. And the story…some evil force hi-jacks the enterprise for his own personal gain….sounds like a plot from the TV series. And for the first time, since TMP, circumstances put the crew back into its familiar configuration…Kirk commanding an actual starfleet mission, with his old crew by his side…kind of like the TV series.
Seems to me, of all the movies, trek 5 captured more elements of the TV show than any other film. Trick references to Sam Kirk, original series sound FX, the Galileo…even tthat crazy 3 pronged engineering instrument was brought in. On top of all that, we can add De Kelly’s best perfomance ever.
Yep, this movie felt right. If you don’t or can’t understand why this movie worked so well, then you simply don’t understand the original Star Trek, it’s structure or it’s characters. It’s not a bad movie, not by a long shot. Bad STar Trek? Not even close.
jonboc – “Yep, this movie felt right. If you don’t or can’t understand why this movie worked so well, then you simply don’t understand the original Star Trek, it’s structure or it’s characters. It’s not a bad movie, not by a long shot. Bad STar Trek? Not even close.”
Gee, here we go for a second strong agreement jonboc, lol. I think what you state here is exactly what has concerned me about this new film. With many years of Trek evolution, new generations of Thinkers, Writers, Producers, and yes Directors who might be strongly swayed away from what the entire chemistry of the original series and crew had become to everyone who saw them as Iconic in their lives, Hollywood does love to tinker and destroy good things sometimes. Look at the colorization of Casablanca, but thats another topic entirely.
I think what you say is so true of ST-V. I think given the demands and short sightedness (Dollar Stingy-ness) by the Exec’s at Paramount that Mr. Shatner had to deal with at the time, he carried off a fantastic story in that film. It remains extremely under-rated by many people, and was a great attempt at some masterful story-telling on Bill Shatners part. That script “was” original Star Trek genre. Many of his detailed thoughts regarding exactly what had happened in the course of trying to make that film, Mr. Shatner tried to detail in his books on Star Trek. He was struggling with pocket deep Executives. In Hollywood? Naawww. lol.
Regarding embarrassment; I rather think its not embarrassing at all to honor someone in words and admiration for what has amounted to almost a lifetimes work on a character and a storyline. Few other actors have dedicated this much of themselves to something. I’m not embarrassed at all, just in awe as I was over 20 years ago. Bill Shatner deserves every accolade he receives. Hammy? Well, yeah at times he has been, but thats what sets him apart from everyone else. He’s a genuine individual and not afraid to be himself despite others judgments. How many of his detractors are receiving a Jules Verne Lifetime Achievement Award?
Keep on going Bill, your doing just fine in your fans opinions.
I was truly moved by this tribute video. Very inspirational. I need it. I live in Omaha where yesterday a young man went homicidal in the Westroads shopping mall and killed 8 people, before turning the rifle on himself.
Some of us Trek fans value the inspirational in film to help renew our spirits.
In Trek V Shatner provided many inspirational scenes, especially in the “Godshow”. It’s regrettable that he wasn’t able to bring his vision to full realization due to the studio execs.
The Shat deserves the Jules Verne Award. Absolutely.
That guy in Nebraska probably saw some of the Shats acting and well you know…
#56– in light of yesterday’s horrific events….your attempt at being clever isn’t working. Come back when you develop a bit more tact and compassion.

True, that. They won’t be a replacement, but maybe they’ll become something new which we old fans and new fans alike can embrace as a work that’s worthy of the original.
That’s *my* Christmas wish for 12/08.
Oh, yeah; and an IKEA kitchen.
Peace. Live long and prosper.

#53, 54
Agreed.
I’ve always liked STV, too, as it’s troika-centric. It may have some weak points concerning the elaboration of the story itself, but its strong point is the character interaction which is beautifully delivered throughout the film.
#56
Incomprehensible.
I love Star Trek V. A Piece of the Action was one of the worst sci-fi scripts imaginable, but it made for a great episode of Star Trek.
#56 trektacular:
As a citizen of the City of Omaha and a long time patron of the Westroads Mall here, I think your comments are way out of line. Attempting a clever Trek joke about the profound suffering “that guy in Nebraska” inflicted is simply unacceptable. Period.
Re: #11 (Krik Semaj ) et al:
Well, I know that ST:V was not the best but I love these guys so much I’d almost sit through anything just to see them in action. (A friend of mine joked about them continuing the series too long and said one of the movies could be called “ST:22: Escape From the Home” as opposed to “The Voyage Home” for those of you new to the franchise)…
Greg2600: You have a point. A lot of the scripts in the original series were really lame (as I’ve mentioned before) but I was desperate to see them. I was only 11 when the series started and was hooked from the start. Have been watching all series of all episodes since. Am very curious about this new one. Hope it won’t let us down.
I’m sorry for what I said, I have no excuse.
My name is Corey Becker and I was the editor on the tribute video. I spent the majority of three weeks digitzing and editing variations of it at home.
Thanks to everyone for watching and your thoughts. To answer some of the discussion above – there weren’t any rights issues on the content. V was used a lot due to Shatner directing it. Generations due to the presentation of the award being by Malcolm McDowell and Patrick Stewart.
Also, V featured some great topics of exploration and preservation, which were the focus of the festival.
Again, thanks for watching.
