Trek Gets Into Bill Gates CES Keynote January 7, 2008

by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: Humor, Trek Franchise , trackback

Listen for the Trek ref in this excerpt from Bill Gates CES 2008 Keynote.

Here is the extended version of Gates ‘last day’ video
(no more trek, but kind of funny)

This is just a silly thing…dont turn this into a political fest. Just another example of how Star Trek, and yes William Shatner, are still part of the today’s culture.

1. TOS Purist - January 8, 2008

The Shat is King of all. :D

2. S. John Ross - January 8, 2008

Clear proof that he should be, not only in the Star Trek film, but in every film, about everything, ever, from this day forward and (with a little help from Romulan time-travel technology) from this day backward, too.

Except for the megabudget William Shatner Biopic Trilogy, of course, in which modesty would prevent him from appearing, as he might draw some of the limelight away from Chris Pine’s portrayal.

3. siridi - January 8, 2008

shatner, you are and always shall be my god

4. MotoQ9mQueerUser - January 8, 2008

Is this a youtube video? If it is, mobile users can’t see it. Can you provide the specific link too?

5. steve adams - January 8, 2008

Shatner undead have trolled the post!
^
Danger Danger….

6. James Heaney - Wowbagger - January 8, 2008

“Bill… Bill -Shatner-?”

Oh, Barack… if only I didn’t disagree with every one of your policies, you’d have just locked up my vote.

7. gord - January 8, 2008

Ah Mr Obama, if I was American I’d be voting for you!

8. Dom - January 8, 2008

Chris Pine should star in a William Shatner biopic!! ;)

Makes sense when you think about it!!!!

9. Dom - January 8, 2008

Very funny video, btw!

10. jonboc - January 8, 2008

That was pretty funny, and he has good comdeic timing! lol

Glad I got to the posts early, before all the Republicans and Democrats use this to start spinning their inevitable “my guy is better than your guy” rhetoric.

11. doubleofive - January 8, 2008

I have several friends who support Obama, and now I know why.

12. Captain Dunsel - January 8, 2008

Not sure how Clinton will take to being called the other Bill but on this board he doesn’t even appear on the long range sensors. The only Bill that matters is Shatman.

13. Lt. McFibberich - January 8, 2008

I am really getting sick of that dragon popping on, even if it is due to my own carelessness…

14. Kirk Thatcher - January 8, 2008

#13: Hate the ad, not the Dragon. I’m trying to figure out what exactly triggers it - I’ve been careful not to roll over any of the movies ads

15. SolFlyer - January 8, 2008

The first Bill to come to Mr. Obama’s mind was Mr. Shatner?!? Sweet!!! I know who I’m voting for.

16. DJT - January 8, 2008

“Never doubt the magic of software!”

17. Scott Gammans - January 8, 2008

No politics here, but can we start a b!tchfest about those obnoxious pop-over ads for “Dragon Wars”? I **hate** those things.

18. Woulfe - January 8, 2008

Billy Bob Gates is leaveing Micro$oft ?

* faints *

Who’ll be the bigest nerd in the world once he’s gone ?

Sorry Anthony if this has nothing to do with the current article, I just felt it was big enough news to put it at the top.

On a personal note, I own a blu-ray player, so this is fantastic f’n news if true.

20. Iowagirl - January 8, 2008

‘The other Bill’ - priceless.

I’ll vote for Shatner! :)

21. JBS - January 8, 2008

And another accolade for Shatner:
In last Sunday’s newspaper magazine “Parade”, Mr. Shatner’s smiling mug was shown in the middle page 4 with the following Q & A
Q: You asked readers to vote for the funniest man on TV. What were your results?
A: Most didn’t endorse our pick: Alec Baldwin of 30 Rock. Instead, they voted for William Shatner (Boston Legal), Steve Carell (The Office), Jason Lee (My Name is Earl), and Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men).

But, this still does not mean we have to have him in the new movie; he’s now known for being a comedian, not an action hero or dramatic actor.

22. Scott Xavier - January 8, 2008

Is that phone real???

23. CmdrR - January 8, 2008

Isn’t it great that when you have billions, you also have friends?

Hell, if Gates wants to, he can certainly bankroll a little $150M movie and put the Shat back in uniform. Make it $175M and Gates’ iPhone can probably CGI Shat back to his 1960’s look.

24. Nathan - January 8, 2008

In the spirit of Election season, I’d like to offer this simple statement of togetherness and unity:

“This land isn’t your land, this land is my land,
From California to the New York Islands,
From the Redwood Forests,
To the gulf-stream waters,
This land was made for me not you.”

Touching, isn’t it?

25. doubleofive - January 8, 2008

22.

It’s a prototype Gates showed at the end of his keynote. It’s impressive, to say the least.

26. Pragmaticus - January 8, 2008

Barack is awesome!

27. nscates - January 8, 2008

Slow news day, I guess.

28. Iowagirl - January 8, 2008

#21

Obama asked ‘Bill Shatner..from STAR TREK?’

This is what Shatner’s known for first off - Star Trek, and the GENERAL public knows him for ST.

So, if you want to target a wider public, there you are.

As regards the comedy factor, versatility’s no hindering factor for an actor, especially if the other acting area is not that far-off as one might think from the adventure playground Shater used to act on. After all, Kirk always had a funny bone.

Anyway, Shatner’s already proven his dramatic acting quality and he’s still being very well recognized for his most iconic role as not only the above video demonstrates. People now coevally recognizing him for different portrayals would only appeal to a broader public as well without depreciating any.

29. Andy Patterson - January 8, 2008

Maybe I’m missing something but I’m not able to access the bottom video.

30. Litenbug - January 8, 2008

oh please… it’s a parody, not a demographic sampling of America saying what they want. Every story on this site seems to make someone think they heard Shatners name.

It all goes back to greed. He shouldn’t have killed the captain for money. He’d likely be in the movie and shooting TODAY. And before you scold me… maybe you should be mad at him first.

every whisper in the wind says….

Denny Crane, Denny Crane…

Maybe I’m missing something but I’m not able to access the bottom video.

Probably a Microsoft application

32. toddk - January 8, 2008

Um, I thought political stuff was banned from here… I recall someone last week being banned for endorsing a candidate after being warned, I would expect that the same thing will apply to these people as well..or is it because they are democrats?

33. Shatner for president - January 8, 2008

That was great. It looks like Bill G. is holding a hand phaser for a pointer. He can never leave Microsoft. He is too much of a workaholic. Is anyone going to the Macworld expo here in the Bay Area next week? I’ll be there as a guest of Microsoft. I’m also seeing the Star Trek friendly band DEVO, which is a private concert just for Microsoft employees, although there a few seats for some fans. The guys at Macworld and Microsoft are of course huge Star Trek fans and DEVO fans. It also looks like they are all Democrats as well. I am a registered Independent myself. I’d like to see an Obama / Clinton ticket myself. They’d be a shoe in.

34. JBS - January 8, 2008

Dear Litenbug, I think Iowa Girl was responding to my post at #21. I do regret the last setence - it looks like Shatner bashing - my bad (to quote Orci). I like Shatner - if they can find a way to bring him in that adds to the story, not distarcts from it - then great!

35. JBS - January 8, 2008

Litenbug #31 “Probably a Microsoft application” - priceless!

The bottom video played fine for me, and I do use MS applications.

36. i Litenbug - January 8, 2008

Litenbug #31 “Probably a Microsoft application” - priceless!

Thanks, but now I am likely being spied on by “Big Brother” for my comments on their religion…um…. business! Yes, Business, that’s it. Sorry, Mr. Gates….

I forgot to mention that I feel that the classic “Mr. Bill” of Saturday Night Live fame (Ooooohhh Nooooooo!) should be in the film, at least as a cameo! His trademark exclaimation would be perfect in the film as enemy torpedos pound mighty Enterprise just before Pine and Quinto instruct Pegg to invert the dilithium chamber to form an inverse warp field allowing big E to escape and destroy the warbirds attacking.
I’ll bet the house the Enterprise main computer is a Mac!
Zzeeennn…

37. Daoud - January 8, 2008

Fascinating…. even as “actors”… Obama really nailed the lines well… so natural a delivery there, so sincere. Clinton’s delivery of the response to Bill made my eyes bleed.

The Al Gore bit was funny too. Perhaps Bill should have thought that Al was running. That would have tied in with his out-of-touchness.

Anyway… still ROTFL from:

“Bill… SHATNER? From Star Trek!?!”

38. Allynd Dudnikov - January 8, 2008

#13: Its called AdblockPlus.. Get it or keep riding the Dragon.

39. Anthony Pascale - January 8, 2008

32: this article is not endorsing anything except Star Trek.

the article also comes with the usual dont turn things into a political debate warning…which you ignored.

got an issue…then say it in feedback

…VOTE TREK in 2008!

40. Ivory - January 8, 2008

Funny how the leaders of our nation only need to hear the name Bill and they think of Star Trek. Yet, the writers of the new film don’t want to be bothered with the man.

Bring back Shatner in ST XI.

41. Ivy - January 8, 2008

Shat for President 8D

42. jfh100970 - January 8, 2008

Gates is sooooooooo funny.

NOT.

43. Aaron R. (Sisko would not agree with the closing of StarTrek.com) - January 8, 2008

Obama!!!! That was so funny.

Aaron R.

44. Oregon Trek Geek - January 9, 2008

Regarding pop-over ads–try Super Ad Blocker. I’ve been using it for over a year, and hardly ever see ads anymore. It took me some time to figure out what you guys were talking about with the dragon.

As for the video of Gates–it was kinda cute. Sorta funny. :)
