You can never please everyone in a fanbase and to try to do so only as far as your vision of the film will allow because they are not telling the story you are.

#63: Granted, people have for years voiced and aimed their dissent at Shatner… or Berman, Braga or Crawley, for that matter, or any other you –fill in the blank– subject. But it seems to me that phasers are, all too often, set on kill on the internet.

Gee, no one has been criticizing him for his TV commercial endeavors (I think they’re a hoot). Although I wouldn’t call him bad recording artist… his relatively recent “Has Been” was actually pretty good–for what it is. And you are probably right, I am sure Bill can most assuredly defend himself. But I digress.

I think it is really VERY easy to be a snot online because no one knows your real identity (in most cases). Without a face for us to associate with the author it is so easy to let loose a barrage of disparaging remarks and not worry about suffering any consequences (except maybe getting banned from the list, which I assume Anthony has had to do on occasion).

I guess what I am trying to say is that I have no problem with folks saying what they feel, but why not use some tact and exercise good manners? Some of the pointed remarks just seem too poisonous and radioactive.

Is it too much to ask that people voice their opinions in a respectful fashion?

#50–Doug, what is it about the internet that makes you assume that people will only voice their opinions in anonymity?
The truth is, doing things that people often make fun of has made Bill alot of money over the years, and keeping his face in front of people (whether it was self-depricating or not) has actually helped to keep him relevant even today. Those SNL parodies helped him become just as recognizable to people who have never seen Star Trek, TJ Hooker, or Boston Legal as to those who cannot get enough. You can say that he wears a bad toupee, is a jerk to fans and co-workers, a mediocre actor, a horrible director, an even worse recording artist, an egomaniac, a ham, a soulless sellout, a self-centered ass, or whatever else has been said, but you cannot say that he is unintelligent and be so sure of yourself (whether you like him as a person or not). He knows that even bad publicity is publicity. I doubt that anyone here could hurt Bill’s feelings.

Doug, my friend, that would be the safety of anonymity and simply a lack of good manners. I try (not always succeeding, tho) to conduct myself here and elsewhere on the web in such a fashion that if I were to meet an online acquaintance in “real” life, say, from Trekmovie.com, I would be *proud* to say, “Hey there! I’m The Vulcanista.”

And for Vulcan’s sake, stay safe when you’re finally deployed! And please nail Osama’s ass to the wall and take a pic for me when you find and kill him! :-)
