Chris Doohan To Appear In Star Trek + Interview

EXCLUSIVE: Last February we ran our first article about Chris Doohan (son of the original Scotty, James Doohan) about his somewhat tongue-in-cheek quest to land the role first played by his father. Doohan later publicly endorsed the selection of Simon Pegg for the role, but that wasn’t the end of the story. In November we reported that Doohan auditioned and we can now report he will appear in the film. Doohan speaks to TrekMovie.com about his upcoming Star Trek role.

TrekMovie.com When do you shoot and do you know where you will appear?
Chris Doohan: At this point, I’m tentatively scheduled to go in later next week to film, but, like James Cawley, I still don’t know exactly what I’m going to do. I can tell you that my father would be happy with my position on the ship.

TrekMovie.com Have you seen your costume yet?
Chris Doohan: I went to Paramount Studios a couple of weeks ago for my fitting. After my déjà vu moment, I stood there in awe of the rows and rows of Star Trek uniforms that seemed to be everywhere. The uniforms are incredible and extremely well made. When it comes to wardrobe, they definitely spared no expense and I can only imagine what the Enterprise set will look like. I can’t wait to see it.

TrekMovie.com Have you met Simon Pegg (the new Scotty), or (director) JJ Abrams yet?
Chris Doohan: Simon Pegg and I have exchanged a few emails and we may get together to toast my Father. I guess I’ll need to bring some green food coloring to put in our drinks. I’m really looking forward to meeting the rest of the cast and J.J. Abrams. I not only think that he was the right guy to do this movie, I believe he’s the only one who could do it in a way that respects Gene Roddenberry’s vision. The fact that he asked Randy Pausch to be in the film proves that for me. Definitely a class act. Being on this film is a dream come true and I can’t thank him enough.

Trek déjà vu
This will be Chris Doohan’s second appearance in a Trek feature, the first being as a background character (along with his brother Montgomery) in Star Trek The Motion Picture in 1979. This makes him the only other person besides Leonard Nimoy to appear in both films and possibly the only other person to appear in the new Star Trek and any other Trek film.

Scotty lives on!

This is great news, I’m very happy for Chris.

James Cawley, Chris Doohan…will an “Anthony Pascale to Appear in ST” article be next?

I have a good friend whom I’ve known most of my life who was also in the scene above, but I don’t think he was aware that he was sharing the rec deck with Scotty’s son. My best to Mr. Doohan, who comes across in these forums as a really nice guy.

(BTW, I met your father many years ago when he appeared at a comics store another friend a friend of mine owned in Fort Lauderdale. I’ll tell you this: he was a crazier character–in a good way–than most fans can probably imagine.)

JJ is cool.

another good word on the uniforms – can’t wait!

Chris, this is fantastic. You bring it full circle, bro. I’m guessing that J.J. had the presence of mind to make you an engineer, if I’m reading between the lines correctly.

#3 Etha Williams –

‘James Cawley, Chris Doohan…will an “Anthony Pascale to Appear in ST” article be next? ‘

Don’t go there. Fearless Leader’s head is big enough already.

j/k ;-)

I say Trek coolness to this news! Chris you seem as classy as your father was great! I really enjoyed his work in his role as Scotty and I enjoyed seeing him in other things through the years. A true hero on screen and off! I know you had the classic trio of Kirk, Spock and McCoy, but there were some great quad scenes in the shows with Scotty joining in as well!;) Anyways I am glad Chris is in this and that I hope he and Simon have a fun evening toasting his cool dad!

PS: Now if Mr. Pascale gets a part in the film what total fun! Hey running this site has to be quite an effort so I feel this makes good karma for such an idea to happen. Just my opinion Mr. Abrams if you happen to read this. ;)

Do your father proud!!! Lad! Hey! would it not be a cruel joke if Shatner’s daughter’s was cast in the movie???? Ha AH..

LMAO@ #10 – the blade’s already sunk in to the hilt. Twisting it like that is just overkill, don’cha think? ;-)

Great for Chris!

Excellent!
Chris, you are a class act and it’s great to see good things come to you.
Your dad would be proud!

You should start listing the people who aren’t going to be in the movie. The list will be shorter. But Doohan seems an appropriate choice.

its going to be a whos who film whats the bettin ull see some tribbles .
ps i really think a tribute to matt geoffries would be nicee in the film and has he asked majel barrett yet is there any st she has nt bin involved in !!!!

MAJEL BARRETT IN ST XI !!!!!!
MAJEL BARRETT IN PLEASE IT WOULD BE THE NICEST TOUCH

Well, I just burst out a’smilin’ at that news. Not only for Chris, but for all of us fans. We have a production team that is willing to listen to us and care about our concerns. I realize this is also about the bottom line and making scads ‘o money for the film’s investors, but it’s just too cool that JJ and Co. are making this motion picture, (not movie, mind you…but a real motion picture with all that entails) for us just like they would want someone to make it for them.
I scanned through Star Trek: Insurrection the other day and remembered how it felt like just an ordinary episode of TNG. A Motion Picture, on the other hand, compels you to watch and absorb everything. Each day, I am feeling more and more that this Christmas will restore my faith in the franchise. Nothing against the old regime, they had their hits and misses, but I am stoked with the fresh take on the scene.
Congrats, Chris Doohan and James Cawley. I don’t think you need reminding that you are living out a lot of our childhood dreams for us. Soak it all in and remember to HAVE FUN.

Doh in all this fun casting news I did not think about what Anthony stated below. Yes it would be great for some of us and you to have had a part of some sort in this film, but your are correct you need a touch of distance so you can report and probably review the final work. So I guess it is better for you to be a visitor to the set instead, if that is in the works. Of course being a possible visitor to the set what fun that could be! But then there is the NDA issue again with even with that. I have signed many NDAs myself in the past so I know the drill.;)

Still it is great to have some Doohan legacy in this and Anthony keep going with the great site as it pulled me and I am sure a few others back into the TREK fun!

“As I said in a previous thread…I am not certain I would want or be able to really do anything on screen. Certainly not a line. And it would be hard to be impartial if I was literally on the payroll, plus if I signed an NDA that might be really bad news for all my other work here.

so no tony cameo for you “

Congratulations, Chris!

What a beautiful piece of serindipity!

I’ll bet your shirt is red and your character is really good at making things go. :)

Best of luck, and break a leg,and be assured, Dad is proud of you!

Peace. Live long and prosper.

Since everybody is seeing the costumes, can’t they at least say whether the miniskirts are back?

Oh and Chris — my lawnmower won’t start and the grill needs a new combustion inducer. Would you mind? Thanks.

21.

No combustion inducer, but I do have some dilithium

17.

You made me smile too.

Shatner’s Hairpiece To Appear In New Star Trek Film As A Tribble!!

Chris,

So pleased for you……ENJOY!

Way ti go Chris!!! Will the Muddflaps be performing on the Enterprise?

Entirely awesome. Break a leg, Chris Doohan; can’t wait to see you (again) on the big screen :)

Hey, MY name is Chris too!

With a bit of luck I might get to be a redshirt :P I wish

Congrats on getting the part Chris! A wonderous send off to your dad :D

Talk about generating big buzz!
We’re a year out and these cool announcements just keep coming!
Break BOTH legs, Chris, and have a blast!

as we all know u are a very talented man, do u believe ST XI will be ur biggest sucess so far and how will u on a personal level judge it as a sucess or failure ? Also is there anything u could nt do that u wanted to do with the film ( dnt say put shatner in it ) ?

Congratulations Engineer Doohan.

“Here’s to ya lad!” All the best, Scotty will be proud!

Chris,

Your dad was the nicest, & truly genuine TOS actor that I’ve ever met at a convention. He honestly enjoyed meeting every single one of his fans that day. I toast to his memory (raises glass), & wish you all success. Qua’Pla!!!

Also, thank you for being my MySpace friend! See you in Trek 11

Congratulations Chris! I look forward to seeing you in the movie.

I really, really, really, hope that Majel is used as the voice of the ship’s computer. It has to be to sound right. I’m betting we will hear her. Come on, JJ! Gene would want it… and what a nice bit of continuity.

Congratulations Chris… but of course, I still wish they’d had you in that other role ;)

Hey, if they haven’t named your character, may I strongly recommend that you suggest your character’s name should be one of the characters your dad voiced in TAS (see http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/James_Doohan )

I’d suggest if you’re retaining your facial hair a young O’Shea, later captain of the Huron. ( http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/O%27Shea )

If they have you shave, then certainly Clayton could work. ( http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Clayton )

Maybe our friend Mr. Orci will fix this right up in his role as a producer: since he can’t write anything. It’d be a simple ad lib to have you commanded to do something by one of the TAS names.

Then you WILL have played a character your father played. :)

It wouldn’t be Star Trek without a Doohan and a little di-lithium! Good luck! I was fortunate to be one of the thousands that sent memorial sentiments on the rocket flight of your father’s remains. He always brought a smile to Trek fans’ faces! It’s a real irony his best outing as Scotty came in the Next Gen episode, “Relics!” He was so full of life and energy, he blew the regulars on that show off the screen! His memory will live long and prosper!

Well congrats to you chris. Im sure youll do your father proud serving on the grand ol enterprise. BTW I am one of your many freinds on Myspace.

WOW!

The legacy lives on! Congrats Chris!

I always loved the character of Scotty! Mr. Doohan’s passing was indeed a sad day for the world of Trek, but his memory certainly lives on.

I’m really beginning to see that JJ Abrams cares a great deal about how he is handling Star Trek by the choices he is making. I’ve said it before, I sure wish he could get Shat in, but I do appreciate that he’s not trying to “crowbar” him in there, just for the sake of doing it.

“May the wind be at your back”!

Awesome! Glad Chris is in it!:)

Good on ya’ Chris! Balance is acheived. This JJ dude seems OK.

BTW, could you talk to him about my death scene?

(I will let it go soon, I promise)

A sweet gesture. JJ is all class.

Oh, yeah; and if you have a scene with Nimoy, well, I’ll just …

Could somebody pass me some Kleenex, please? I’ll be okay. Really, I will… {{SOB}}

Peace. Live long and prosper.

But lo and behold
From on high we were told
Chris’s role in Trek is a don’t-miss!

I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Doohan recently, and I just wanted to say that he was such an unbelievably nice man. He desperately deserves to be in this movie.

Hey, Roberto,

You going to be at the interview tomorrow? I’m viewing the whole thing as an exercise in self control: How much work can I get done while still attending the interview? HA! There goes the weekend. :(

Peace. Live long and prosper.
The Vulcanista }:-|

How about that. This is yet another cool new bit of news.

In addition to the statistics… He was in the first movie after the original series… Now he’ll be in the first movie before the original series.
