International Trailers At Official Movie Site [UPDATED] January 30, 2008

To get to the int’l sites and trailers, scroll down on the official site and click on the flags. The countries available so far are: UK, Italy, Ireland, Spain, Russia, Australia, and New Zealand. The UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand sites and trailers all cite Boxing Day as a release date. All others only have ‘2009′ for now. TrekMovie.com is trying to get a full list of international release dates and will do an update when Paramount provides one.
UPDATE: More flags/sites/trailers added
In the last day Paramount have added flags for the sites for Mexico/Latin America, France and Germany (but for now the German site has the UK trailer…but Paramount will be adding a German trailer soon).
The trailers are fundamentally the same with the audio translated into local languages. This means that the original clips from NASA in the 60s along with Nimoy’s “space the final frontier” are in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand versions. However, the Spanish, Italian, French, German and Russian versions all have the titles and the audio in the local languages. At least in the case of the Russian, it appears that the NASA clips have been replaced with those from Russia’s space history. (hopefully some international TrekMovie.com readers can translate what is in place of the NASA clips for these versions).
Going global
It is nice to see that Paramount thinking globally for this Star Trek movie. With this big budget movie, they will need to bring in big bucks outside the domestic market for the film to be a success. Although Star Trek is often thought of as a global phenomenon, the Trek films have not really done that well overseas (especially in non-English speaking countries). These days your typical ‘tentpole’ movie is expected to do at least as well overseas as it does domestically, with some doing many times more overseas. Yet every Trek film has made around 60% of its sales domestically. One exception to the non-English speaking world is Germany, where Trek is very popular (making it ironic that the German trailer is not up yet). One area where Trek really needs to get more traction is in Asian markets (so hopefully Paramount gets cracking on trailers and sites for Japan, China, Korea and beyond).

As far as I see it, the German version has not yet been translated, it’s simply the UK version… and for some weird reason, the website’s font has been changed from the TOS registry font to the one used in the DS9 and Voyager credits. Also the German’s expect the movie “soon in cinemas” - probably no reliable release date yet.
BTW: The French website is not linked properly.

I’m from Germany too. I love this site. I want to say hello to all the other fans here. I’m following the discussion here since the beginning. Thats help me to practise my english. I know it’s bad but my reading is better.
I hope the release in cinema is worldwide the same day. This would more recognized by the tv news and others like the releases of harry potter or star wars. And so some new people say “oh my god that ist awesome this boom about the film maybe I watch it to to unterstand this boom”. I hope you can unterstand my bad english.

I’m crazy to get home and hear who is voicing for nimoy in this movie here in Spain.
I found recently that his voice in our TOS DVDs is the same voice of Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s LOTR.
Australia did have a fledgling Space Program, we even put our satelite into space decades ago, we were one of the first countries to do so I believe “During the heyday of rocketry research in the 1960s Australia was the fourth nation to launch a satellite, WRESAT, into orbit, and the third from its own soil.” Straight from wikipedia but our Govt gave up on it.
Just watching those trailers I remember someone in the cinema saying, “cool! wonder what that it is!” and a girl said

Star trek Is supposed to be, in part, about all the countries in the world working together as one. Tis is not like G.I. Joe, where the grat american heroes are american french, japanese,etc in greater glory of the USA.
In Star trek Things are done in greater glory of Humanity, so, no Great american heroes for you in Trek, and then again so, miltilingual, multicultural marketing.

And Trek wasa about ALL of humanity not just the US. Theres nothing racist about having voices from Russia’s space program play over the trailer, it links Russia with the Trek Universe and Gene wanted. So in short, the almighty US of A is not the only nation in the world, but then again many American School kids believe WW I started in 1917 and that WWII started in 1941.
USA is an amalgamation of the world, since every race and culture goes there. USA is really the beginning of the Federation when you think about it.
Can’t wait to see the Vulcan trailer.

There is so much wrong with your overall post that you are hereby awarded this month’s ‘politically incorrect’ award! Hopefully the crew of this movie reflects an EARTH crew rather than a purely U.S.A. crew, just as the original TOS did surely, not forgetting a non-Earth Spock…
However, for coming up with ‘Star Trek’ in the first place, gawd bless America indeed. Just remember, without the likes of Scotty, the ‘E’ might not have gotten very far. :)

@Anthony: The 25th is officially confirmed for Germany. The German Association of Film Distributors (Verband der Filmverleiher VdF) lists it on it’s web site for December 25th.
There is a Brazilian version of the teaser, but the voice wasn´t repleaced, they put subtitles. There´re rumours that the premiere in Brazil won´t happening in december. So, I guess, no international release for us, only in 2009. I think will be the same for other latin countries, or maybe, in Europe, Asia, etc.

He isn’t doing the line in the trailer. I believe the trailer uses the voice of the movies (It makes sense) but I’m not sure. I’ll try to figure out who he is and tell you other actors he shares.
The voices of the Spanish trailer say exactly the same thing as in the transcripts above, by the way, and most of them are voiced by the same “young inteligent man” voice, so I believe that it may most probably be the voice for young Kirk.
By the way. If anyone wants to know, the voice of Shatner in the TOS DVDs is the same as Tom cruise, Tom Hanks and Robin Williams (and incredible voice actor who mutates into the original actor and mimicks their voice perfectly, but for some reason decided not to do so in Star Trek), but in the movies we have Constantino Romero (The most famous Spanish voice actor ever) who also is James Earl Jones, Swartzenegger and Clint Eastwood (and also sounds completely diferent on each voice) So, there you have it, Kirk and Vader (and terminator, by the way) are the same person here.

I know most USA citicens don’t realice it, but the main reason of why other countries talk of your country the way they do, is becasue you go around saying that Occidental values are only yours, when in reality, your culture, values, ethic, etc is exactly the same as ours. Most of the things you think off as “USA fingerprints” are actually “human civilitation fingerprints” and it is a bit annoying when we see your politicians on TV saying they are only yours.
The Trek teaser won’t be shown along with Cloverfield in Germany. It’s actually unclear if it will be shown in theatres at all.

As a matter of fact, teasers never reach italian theatres. And I see a “2009″ as release date.

This is the best trailer I’ve ever seen, mainly because its about construction rather than destruction. This is atypical and refreshing. I’m so repelled by common trailers that highlights the most violent scenes of a movie and the most disgusting behaviour of people, like that is supposed to attract an audience. But it does, unfortunately. After all, bad news are more popular than good news, too. But this Star Trek trailer is definitely a positive step in the right direction and for me personally, its a dream coming true. I know its only a first trailer, and the tone is probably going to change later on, and succumb to the traditional marketing. But maybe the final movie will indeed be in the spirit of Trek, despite its marketing, and highlight the better part of humanity. Time will tell.

Of course it is and will be American. Though I wouldn’t know any reason why an Hollywood or American production can’t try to be as international as the content of the movie’s story pretends, at least try.

And for what Ive heard, Nasa buildings are full of Spanish (and other European) scientists. (And Spain also has astronauts in Nasa).
The US has alot of problems. However, it’s seems to me that it’s the only country that welcomes just about any human group to it’s shores. Right, Bush sux, we can be very arrogant, petty, and stupid. But the world wants to come here more than anywhere else. And they will continue to do so.
I don’t mean that you are evil nor anything similar, nor that you are more or less than us.
My main dialog here is that a movie about humanity being together and fullfilling things is not an exclusive USA concept, and that Startrek has Worldwide relevance and feelings regardless of it being made in L.A. I won’t accept that anything in the concept is “USA like” unless there is an actual flag in there, (And then, I’ll only complain about the flag’s attempt to own the concept) but Star Trek has never had flags in such contexts becasue of the same thing I’m defending.
Hey fellow german Trek fans! Actually seems like a tryst today. Does anyone have an idea who will be dubbing Leonard Nimoy this time? And what with all the other cast members? Will they give them new voices as well? It would seem strange to see (and hear) a young Kirk speaking with the voice of old Kirk.

The space program would never have happened in this way without “importing” all those Nazi scientists while conveniently “forgetting” about their war crimes… Ironic, is it not…

Yes it has, but in the generic version of “Is it ethic to take advantage of the good scientific advances coming from unethical actions?” through a medical advance At least once in Voyager, but I think it has more episodes mentioning this idea. I’m preety bad with episodes names anyway, so, if anyone else can say some episode titles regarding this…
Maaan I’m proud of being a fan of this series.
Oh - and the guy still inside the station (not walking) is the Russian Yuri Malenchenko. Take a listen and see if he pronounces his “V”s and “W”s. Seems like there’s no more credible source than an actual Russian astronaut speaking english from orbit!

I think this is the actual reason for putting various versions of the trailer on the market.
When mankind makes a huge step forward, being that an orbital flight, a space station, a robotic rover or a moon landing, I don’t care the nationality.
My modest Italy has not a space program but is very helpful in the construction of modules and electronic components used in space crafts.

That aside, making all the different trailers like that is very much in the spirit of Star Trek. How could you possibly complain about that? The bridge was a place for Russians, Japanese, Scots, African-Americans & even aliens from another world. The core concept of the entire show is the planet coming together and stopping all the petty bickering over imaginary lines & who’s god is better.
Even though I’m sure it was done primarily from a marketing angle, I’d like to think that it was also - at least in part - because JJ & crew actually understand what this show was about.

I think it’s fantastic that the producers thought to do a localized Russian Version.
We’re (NASA) partnered with them for the Space Station… and although things are a little chilly now- Hopefully yet another Post-Putin Glasnost will happen over there.
Nice little detente by way of this trailer. Implication: Yes we in America appreciate your contribution- and without the early contribution of your scientists and Cosmonauts- Starfleet wouldn’t be quite the same.
Of ALL the things the production team has done- this little effort has earned the most respect from a guy who’d given up hope on Trek.
(Of course should they still plan on filming in Iceland, (Home of WHALING)

I have never seen any episode or movie of the Star Trek universe, but as I heard that JJ would be making this movie, I became interested in this project. And now, after I’ve seen the teaser, I started to watch TOS on german television and absolutely love it. You can call me a fan now…
I’m German and really would prefer to watch the movie first in the original language - english. This translation thing is mostly the reason, that the movie will open later here than in U.S. I would be happy if some Theaters show the original and let it got. As it comes to Trek, my english can be very fluent and I don’t like synchronisation - it would be the third and fourth voice for Nimoy and thinking of this … the voice they gave Sylar/quinto in Heros is not one of my favorites.
There are many Germans who have no problem at all to watch movies in Original and I think it should be made possible. But I understand, that the older citizens and Trek Fans here often have this language problem and so it makes sense to translate.
I really think about a vacancy in Great Britain on release day just to view it on time and in original language.

Actually, I’m glad for DVDs that come with all kinds of languages and subtitles, as I tend to miss details when watching the English original. (My ears are worse off than my eyes.)
With dubbing and subtitles, there’s a lot of fun to be had. Anyone ever had a look at the French DVD version of TOS? The subtitles are totally different to what the characters say - obviously, they were translated from the English original, independently from the actually dubbed French. (Therefore, no help if you want to learn French this way.)
The DVD with Startrek V, btw, came out in Germany with German and Turkish(!) as languages. Guess that says something about our population structure ;)
And yeah, I should work but rather let myself get side-tracked here…
To the poster who marveled at the Russian “spelling-out” of Jay-Jay: The Cyrillic alphabet has no equivalent to a “J.” They have a “D” sounding letter and a “ZH” sounding letter (that cool symmetrical one). When you put D and ZH together, it sounds like a “J.” Then they spell out the “ey” afterwords.
Re: America, etc. Trek was an American show, but I think it always tried to get past US-centric “rah-rah” generalities by showing respect for diversity as a virtue as best it could. In Farpoint, having a bald French captain yell at Q in an Oliver North 1980’s US Army uniform with a British accent was priceless for me (I’m an American).
As for inspiration, I have lived and worked overseas most of the last 16 years, and I always look at Trek as the inspiration to see and understand more, and to try to appreciate it!

Well I don’t think you would recognize a German Character, unless he hasn’t a really bad accent. Western Characters look all the same, no difference if English, French or American.
I think an Arab Character would be nice. At the moment the Arabs seem to be in most western heads “the new enemies”, so they could do the same with them as they did with the russians -chekov or chinese- sulu in the 60s.

Interesting idea. But AFAIS if the character doesn’t have a beard like Bin Laden, we wouldn’t get that either - just think of Dr. Bashir :) He looks fair enough among the DS9 folks as not to register as “non-western”.

Even if the main reason for that diversity in trailers is a purely economical one, i.e. no one will be moved by Kennedy speech here in Ukraine or Russia, I still think it was a great idea to do them, they way Abrahms and Co did.
Actually, it’s the same as my stance towards Roddenberry, who, obviously, was a greedy and a very flawed man, yet, we own him everything we have now.
Star Trek VIII had an execcellent metaphor for it with its Zefram Cochraine storyline. This teaser won’t be remembered as an attempt to increase the film’s box office in the non-US countries, just like Gene won’t be remembered for wrongly claiming 50% of the Courage’s theme royalties, just like Zefram won’t be remembered a drunk, but as a hero.
And it’s great, this world needs heroes.

Luckily (I think), in Hebrew there’s no dubbing, always subtitles, for movies, TV, (everything but cartoons. Most of them, at least). I guess if we heard another voices as Kirk nd every other media character, it would have taken a little of the character, wouldn’t it?
Don’t you (in “dubbing countries”) feel you miss something? Isn’t it weird to hear them in your own language?
I guess it’s a matter of what you’re used to, both with dubbing or subtitling.

And you forgot the fact that his favourite beverage is Earl Grey tea.They should have made him drink coffee, not tea (I was gonna say wine but that may not have been a good idea! :) ).
Anyhoo, coming back to the subject at hand, the trailer was translated into French pretty much word for word. I think they did a good job but there’s no way in hell I’m going to see this movie in French. The voice-overs will probably be totally annoying, as usual. Mind you, I remember Kirk’s voice in French from back when I was a kid and it wasn’t bad at all (surprisingly!) so who knows…

I’d only watched the TOS reruns in japanese (my stupid VCR could only record the japanese voice overs!) until about 10 years ago, then i started watching the episodes in the original english, it felt like I was watching a completely different show! I have to say the nuances sometimes do get lost with the translations.
BTW Sulu is given a different name in the japanese version (guess because he’s meant to be japanese?) he’s called Mr. Kato. (That’s a surname by the way.) Guess the broadcasters weren’t happy with the fact that he had a non-japanese surname although he is meant to be Japanese!!! ;)

George Takei has told the story several times that Sulu was originally supposed to be a sort of pan-Asian everyman. Hence instead of a Japanese/Chinese/Korean/Filipino name they chose Sulu for the Sulu Sea. He eventually got a personal name, Hikaru which is Japanese. If we go by STIV, Sulu was born in San Francisco where his ancestors had lived since the 1980s. So is Sulu “meant to be Japanese”? Hard to say actually. Asian American is the about as much as we know really.

You have South american voices in all the series on tv, but we in Spain dont have european spanish audio on Voyager and DS9 on DVD, only south american spanish on both series DVDs.

Hikaru Sulu is indeed American, born in San Francisco–in fact, in a deleted scene from Star Trek IV, he was to have met his own great-great-grandfather
as a boy on the streets of San Francisco. Unfortunately, after hiring the boy who would play “Sulu Hikaru”, the child was too shy to perform the scene, and it had to be cut.
As for his hyphenated nationality… that’s a little less clear, and that’s by design. When conceiving the show, Gene Roddenberry was certain he wanted an Asian-American character, but he was agonizing over whether to make him Chinese or Japanese; tensions between the two nations were, twenty years after WWII, as high as they had ever been. Gene was torn, and so he pulled out a map of Asia and just browsed over it for a while.
There he noticed the Sulu Sea, and suddenly realized both the solution to his problem and his character’s name–belonging to all of Asia and yet none of it, Sulu would represent Asia united, beyond nationality. One more example of Star Trek’s wonderful diversity rearing its head.
And there’s your random Trek history anecdote for the day. Hopefully no one posted it while I’ve been typing this. :P

One might remember the words on the plaque on the lunar module Eagle as we discuss nationalism and space: “We came in peace for all mankind.” There was much flag-waving, etc., associated with those early days of space exploration, but sometimes an awareness of worldwide humanity, too, and those reflect its best moments.
Of course there is a german space program and yes, we had a lot of Astronauts out there.^^ That they use the american Space Shuttle or russian Sojius doesn’t matter.
Some quotes from Wernher von Braun, Sigmund Jähn, Herman Oberth, Ulf Mehrbold or even from Einstein are possible. Something like that would be really nice vor a german version.

I used to live in Moscow,and, in 1994, bought “Zvyozdniy Put’: Pokalenye” (ST Generations) from a kiosk outside the Prospekt Mira Metro on a badly recorded VHS tape.
It was so tough to find, because absolutely no-one knew about Star Trek.
I hope Russia gets interested in Star Trek. You have some interesting SciFi films now as well (Nochnoi/Dnyevnoi Dozor), so hopefully Dzhei-Dzhei Abrams won’t disappoint!

The days of the Space Race were heady times, I only just remember it but there were two ways of looking at it… for sure there was ‘let’s beat the Commies to the Moon’ part, without which the space programme would never have happened.
But in the main, the act of achievement as a species was far more lasting and memorable.
I think the trailer gives a feel for that with all it’s diverse languages, but speaking as a non-American, I got a tingle at Kennedy’s words… jingism or not, that was classy!
I was happy with the US trailer, the international ones are icing on the cake.
Please, Paramount, if you happen to stumble in here, do an equally great version of this trailer in Mandarin with clips of the Taikonauts from CNSA talking…!

Also in the last ENT episode, Troi said that the treaty of Algeron enabled the use of cloaking technology on Federation ships in the German version. In fact, it was not enabled, but outlawed!

There’s plenty of glory to share around - and equally you can criticise any nation about *something* in its past or present. The key thing about Star Trek, and the secret of Roddenberry’s vision, was that in the future there would be only one “nation” and that is The Earth.
This can be a difficult leap for some people, especially if they’ve been brought up to be fiercely proud of their own particular country and its achievements. The key is not to get too obsessed with any one “flag” but be proud of all instances where *mankind* and the cause of humanity advanced. If your nation managed some of these, then great. But equally if another one did, be willing to celebrate that too.
Interesting. I wasn’t event expecting the trailer to appear in Aussie cinemas. We don’t tend to really get teaser trailers. It’s not likely that I’ll get to see Cloverfield to catch the trailer though. Got little kids.
They should have put some kind of allusion to “The Dish” in the Australian one. That would have been so cool.
It’s funny though, rather than making separate trailers, wouldn’t it have been better to include voices from many different countries’ space programs rather than have all all-american one, and an all-russian one? I would have like a little mix-up there but oh well.

Think Ivan Yefremov - The Bull’s Hour, The Andromeda Nebula..
Think Strugatsky brothers (they actually wrote Star Trek before Star Trek - their “Noon: 22nd Century” is from 1962 and you can’t get any more trekkish than that).
Think Kir Bulychev - “Alice” series, The Mountain Pass, countless short stories.
Think Sergey Lukyanenko - and that’s not just “Night Watch”, which is actually one of the weaker works of his. More interesting works are Labyrinth of Reflections, Stars are Cold Playthings and more.
With cadres like this, you don’t need Star Trek to keep your imagination flying.

And, being stuck for the moment with southamerican voices, I agree they can mess things a lot. they even translated a photon torpedo as a four ton torpedo and the wormhole as a warm hole in an episode or two of DS9 (thank god, since a month ago, a Spanish tv chanel is making new spanish voices for DS9)

A friend just returned home from watching “Cloverfield”. The German trailer IS shown before the movie now. It’s completely in English except for the “Space, the final frontier” bits, which are translated into the regular German opening phrase “Der Weltraum, unendliche Weiten”. The opening date is “Bald im Kino” (Soon in cinemas).
