Official Movie Site Opens Forums January 30, 2008

by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: Star Trek (2009 film), TrekMovie.com , trackback

The official movie site for Star Trek opened up their forums tonight.

What about TrekMovie.com forums?
I am glad you asked. TrekMovie obviously has an active community for article talk back, but we have held back on traditional forums. But in February we will be opening a new community section of the site. The first step was taken literally this afternoon by signing on with a new hosting company who will be able to handle the growing traffic for the site (the new provider handles huge sites using the same technology, like perezhilton.com, so they can handle us). More info coming soon.

I am so there!

2. Craig - January 30, 2008

Nice

3. richpit - January 30, 2008

I’m glad to hear that you’re getting forums for TrekMovie.com! I’m not a fan of this “comment” format…

4. Craig M - January 30, 2008

Anthony do you know if the new movie and their forum will replace StarTrek.com?

5. NCC-73515 - January 30, 2008

Sorry to say that, but I simply must… I was the first fan member, even before the cast and crew… still can’t believe it! This is a dream come true… the greatest honor and the happiest moment of my fan life.

Please understand me… I think I’ll burst the next second :D

6. Craig M - January 30, 2008

Sorry I meant the new movie site and their forum will replace StarTrek.com.

7. manrum - January 30, 2008

Wow! So impressed nice!

8. Anthony Pascale - January 30, 2008

as far as I know Paramount and CBS are doing their own things. So startrek.com forums are safe as long as cbs wants them to run.

as for the comments section…even when we add the community the comments will stay the same. It has proven popular and I dont want to mess with it for now.

9. James Jamziz - January 30, 2008

Does that mean we stop posting here??

haha just kidding

10. Nelson - January 30, 2008

So could this mean that some of the chat here can get siphoned off there? Not that I think that will happen. But I do wonder, being it’s the official movie site, would it get exclusives over trekmovie? Like the nice chat that was here last week. Hope not, hope the exciting stuff still happens here too!

11. section9 - January 30, 2008

Right. Let’s all go over there and tell Shat jokes.

12. British Naval Dude - January 30, 2008

Arrrr… why be I going to Paramount when I can go “arrrrr” here?

Do ya have to enter a code every 4 hours to keep a’blogging there?

First time I say Parrrrrramount and out I be… before I even ask where the mountain is in thar logo…

13. Clinton - January 30, 2008

I can only imagine how much your traffic has been growing over the last few months, Anthony. Those servers will need to be made of forged steel to handle the hits that will be coming throughout ‘08. Bring it on!

14. elmachocombo - January 30, 2008

I won’t be signing up until some of you braver souls come back here to tell us about all the spam you’re suddenly having to delete fom the “in”box. Or not. We’ll see.
That privacy notice is making me cross-eyed.

15. CanuckLou - January 30, 2008

Thanks for the heads up Anthony!

16. elmachocombo - January 30, 2008

Hello Anthony. I noticed tonight, for the first time that this site is behaving strangely. Little hiccups I never noticed before. I hope Paramount isn’t trying to bring you down. Jealous of your superiority, no doubt.

17. Anthony Pascale - January 30, 2008

hiccups? please elaborate?

18. Ampris - January 30, 2008

Joined! :D

19. Ampris - January 30, 2008

Wait… uh, I need some help. Oi. It’s not letting me log on! I registered, activated the account, clicked remember so I wouldn’t have to enter the name and password every time, and it won’t let me log in anymore. What gives? =(

I can’t click on any threads or forums, either. Weird.

20. diabolk - January 30, 2008

#16… a bit paranoid?

For that, we must come for you.

21. Ampris - January 30, 2008

Nevermind, kinda. I can see the forums and log in now, but can’t post or select an avatar or anything. Maybe it’ll just take a minute to straighten out.

22. Doug - January 30, 2008

hiccups? maybe you have…

Had tToo much Romularn Ale?

or maybe a virus from Psi 2000?

or maybe nanites have infected your computer from the internet?

23. Michael (the real one in Texas by way of Afghanistan) - January 30, 2008

I joined as well, and can’t log on. When I click threads, it says that i need to register.

24. Doug - January 30, 2008

gee, I guess I have had too much Romulan Ale myself…

sorry for all those da**ed typos… it should have read as follows….

hiccups? maybe you have…

Had too much Romulan Ale?

or maybe a virus from Psi 2000?

or maybe nanites have infected your computer from the internet (which means it’s Wesley Crusher’s fault)?

I am such a TREK geek!

25. Kirky - January 30, 2008

Will everyone go there, and abandoned here? :(

26. The Vulcanista - January 30, 2008

I went ahead and registered so I could get The Vulcanista as a user name.

The one, the only, ME! Accept no substitutes!

Peace. Live long and prosper.
The Vulcanista }:-|

27. Ampris - January 30, 2008

Naw, 25, I’m pretty sure we’ll all be sticking around here. It’s too groovy a site to ditch just like that. ;) No, this site’ll still be big. (Especially for news- most likely the majority of news stories posted on the new forums will be linked back here. LOL)

28. The Vulcanista - January 30, 2008

#25

Absolutely NOT!!!

These folk here at trekmovie.com have worked *far* too hard for far too long to be abandoned now.

Besides, I think we have a very *interesting* crew of bloggers here! :)

Peace. Live long and prosper.

29. Michael (the real one in Texas by way of Afghanistan) - January 30, 2008

#25 - No way! This is the place to be. In Feb, when Anthony opens the forums here, everyone will leave there to come here!

30. elmachocombo - January 30, 2008

Crusher! I knew it. Couldn’t be that I’m paranoid. Could it? No. Maybe. Well? Nah. Seriously tho, I hate junk email.

31. The Vulcanista - January 30, 2008

And if the execs and sharks at Paramount in charge of Trek have any sense at all, they’ll leave trekmovie.com the hell alone!

Peace. Live long and prosper.

32. blake powers - January 30, 2008

Can we keep posting here??

33. Anthony Pascale - January 30, 2008

dont worry about paramount…they like trekmovie.com…well most of the time

as for everyone leaving…I am not worried. i imagine many here check out trekbbs and other sites. and will join our new forums. For now I am not going to join the official forums….not enough time for me to post there here and elsewhere.

34. Anthony Pascale - January 30, 2008

blake…of course you can post here…and on our new community coming up soon!

35. I am not Herbert - January 30, 2008

I can’t seem to be able to log on or view posts. =(

WTF? Is it just me?

Anybody?

Live Long and Prosper

36. Ampris - January 30, 2008

‘Kay, now I’m getting frustrated. When will I be allowed to post?

37. I am not Herbert - January 30, 2008

It won’t even let me view the FAQ (?)

38. blake powers - January 30, 2008

Awesome!!! Thanks Anthony.
How many hits do you get on this site a day?

39. I am not Herbert - January 30, 2008

Oh well, I like it here better anyway.

Anthony: Are you going to start your own forums?

LL&P

40. Anthony Pascale - January 30, 2008

blake….a lot
herbert…as the article above states….yes

trekmovie.com community forum coming soon…in Feb

41. I am not Herbert - January 30, 2008

SWEET! Looking forward to it! =D

42. elmachocombo - January 30, 2008

Calling Mr. Ballz! I said I’m looking for Harry Ballz! Paramount will probably ban a few of us just because we have questionable pseudonyms. Good call Vulcanista. You need to need to hang on to that name and we need to hang onto Harry Ballz! Wouldn’t be the same without ‘em. Er, him I mean. Ampris, every time I read your name I get dyslexic and say “armpits”. No offense:) Nah, this place is our animal house. I’m stayin’. Richpit! Just noticed yours too. Love it.

43. Bobby - January 30, 2008

just checked out the forum section at the official site and i am not a fan of that type of forum layout. here at trekmovie it is so easy and user friendly, it is what drew me here and what will keep me here.

Thanks Anthony

Be warned. LOL ;-)

Me either!

47. Michael (the real one in Texas by way of Afghanistan) - January 30, 2008

Finally was allowed to log in, but now it says that all are closed to posting.
I’d rather be here anyway. I doubt seriously that the “official” site will give much away. There is an item in the rules about posting Spoiler Warnings.

48. Anthony Pascale - January 30, 2008

hi bob…glad to hear it…I dont know what we would do without you

49. Ampris - January 30, 2008

Re #47: Aw, man. I just sent them a message asking if there was a problem for nothing. Oops? Oh well. I’ll just wait, then. Maybe we’ll be allowed to post by tomorrow morning.

(And 42, no worries. I get that a lot, actually, LOL. :p )

50. CaptPicard - January 30, 2008

You’ll find me using the above screen name (if I ever actually post!) :P

51. I am not Herbert - January 30, 2008

Yeah, I *FINALLY* was able to log on, but still can’t post…

Think I’ll just wait for forums to open here. ;-)

52. Michael (the real one in Texas by way of Afghanistan) - January 30, 2008

Yeah, I’m sticking with you guys!
Super Wal-Mart with a Sam’s Club attached.

56. Cheve - January 30, 2008

We are going to see the news here for sure. If they have any exclusive in that forum, then most probably Anthony will tell us, so, this is a better place to check for news and comment them.

Not that I won’t be checking the forum there, but this is so cleen and inmediate

Anthony - This place is great and with cool fans so I’m going to stay here too…and wait for this forum :) Thanks for your great work.

Second URL to the right till Christmas *G*

58. TJ Trek - January 31, 2008

Aren’t forums pretty much like this commenting thing…. or am I off base on that. I hope that how to become parrt of the forum is cleary explained. If there is a need to “Sign up” then there is an easy link.

59. GARY NEUMANN - January 31, 2008

Excellent!!! I will register right away!

60. GraniteTrek - January 31, 2008

Oh good, this gives the people who still want Shat in the movie (or are angry he’s not) someplace else to carry on their futile struggle - actually, I see it’s already started… ;)

61. jonboc - January 31, 2008

Forums tend to ramble on . I prefer to have to focus my attention on the article at hand. But It’s good to see Trekmovie grow, I’m sure many will enjoy it.

62. doubleofive - January 31, 2008

I just signed up for the “official” forums, but I feel bad leaving you guys behind! I’ll probably just use the “official” forums until this one is up.

The problem with forums is that spoilers (real or imagined) are going to start popping up with alarming frequency. And there won’t be much I can do to stop myself from reading them…

63. Ampris - January 31, 2008

Argh! Right, now I’m seriously irritated. There are loads of members now and they all appear to be posting normally, but I still can’t post. I can’t change my avatar, can’t edit my profile, can’t start new threads- nothing. :(

64. Clifford Ransom - January 31, 2008

Assimilate this!

65. Jackson Roykirk - January 31, 2008

#63 Ampris

I’m having the same problem — I registered like it asked, I got the activation email, and I clicked on the activation link. I’m on the forum page and it even says “Welcome, [my username]”, but it won’t let me reply to posts or even LOOK at my profile. When I try to reply or edit my profile, it says I don’t have permission to do so.

66. British Naval Dude - January 31, 2008

#64 Har!

Arrrr… think I got the wrong corporate movie website blog… something about gizmos for treating comminicable diseases… turned out to be SARS Tech…but they at least would let me post and (so I did, asked about me blue rash) which is unlike the new un-postable CBS (Paramount?) site… reckon I’ll just stay here… bother you folk…

67. Tom_Fleetlord - January 31, 2008

@#58 “Aren’t forums pretty much like this commenting thing…. or am I off base on that. I hope that how to become parrt of the forum is cleary explained. If there is a need to “Sign up” then there is an easy link. ”

Yes this is similar idea, however there are pro’s and con’s to both, The pro about this comment area is that it is very easy and is sorta a ‘one stop shoping ‘approach wereas you read the article and post a comment all in the same page. The cons are restricting fans topics to the the particualar topic and there by not having a medium to allow fusers to make there own topics and also other features a forum has to allow for community growth. It seems Anthony is just trying to deliver a more all-inclusive site and develop the community aspects to give more freedom to its users.

68. Tom_Fleetlord - January 31, 2008

The other thing about comments is i cant go back and edit my spelling mistakes!! LOL ^

69. Cervantes - January 31, 2008

#8 Anthony Pascale

Thank goodness for that.

70. Tony Whitehead - January 31, 2008

Anthony,
Maybe it’s just me, but except for the chat issues the other day with the production crew, I find this format the easiest to follow and is one of the prime reasons I come here every day. The other is the informed and intelligent fans that also visit.

I also check out other sites, like trekweb.com for instance, but get irritated by the nested/flat etc format. Please keep this format as well.

71. Dr. Image - January 31, 2008

So many forums, so little time for real work.
Hmmm… do I change my name?
Anth- I like this comment 4mat. Please keep!

72. Closettrekker - January 31, 2008

I also come here most everyday now. It’s not often that I can talk about Star Trek with people who care as much as I do. I can’t imagine any other site offering something better than what is so wonderfully done here.

73. star trackie - January 31, 2008

Forums take way too time to dig taround in, just to find something you might be interested in discussing. Here it’s easy…Anthony posts a new article…you discuss that…if you feel the need. It’s streamlined and to the point. I hope, should an official Trekmovie forum open up, that these comment sections stay active.

Frankly it is this very setup that seperates this site from all the others…that I don’t go to.

74. JBS - January 31, 2008

I’m with you star trackie. I don’t have time for forums. This format is the best. (I don’t understand how some people can spend so much time on line. Do they work for the government?)

Anthony said @ #8:
as for the comments section…even when we add the community the comments will stay the same. It has proven popular and I dont want to mess with it for now.

Anthony…..don’t say “for now.” Say “forever.” PLEASE.
We can have it both ways, right?

75. Captain Hackett - January 31, 2008

I cannot post any reply or thread after my account is activated. As a former forum administrator, I think something is wrong with their settings.

Yeah, I am pissed off.

76. Anthony Pascale - January 31, 2008

74
I am currently mulling over various community packages. I briefly thought of tying it directly to the comments section and have the comments within the ‘community/forums’ (this is how they do it at TrekToday/TrekBBS’…but I have decided that I will let the front page article comments section stay the same…so comments will stay ‘under’ the articles.

And the forums/community will be for ‘other’ discussions. But once I do that there is bound to be some repetition…I guess we will just have to deal with that. You will have to register for the community, but ‘for now’ (and possibly forever) we will keep the article comments to be just ‘email only’ without creating ‘accounts’

As soon as the site migration is done, this is priority number one. Then there will be a full site redesign.

77. The Vulcanista - January 31, 2008

Just went over to the other site. Those having issues with signatures and profiles, try again. I was able to do mine w/o trouble.

And, uh-oh. Looks like they’re allowing HTML. Ick.

Peace. Live long and prosper.
The Vulcanista }:-|

78. Nelson - January 31, 2008

I noticed on one James Bond site, they have the front page with news as is done here. Click the article title, and it takes you to the story and then at the bottom of the article, there is a link; “Discuss this news here” and it directs you to the forums. Thought that worked out very well.

Once there you can step back and look at all the other topics discussed there.

79. Stanky McFibberich - February 1, 2008

After visiting the forums on the movie site, it is good to come back here.

I may not agree with everyone who posts on this site, but the forums are really infested with some goofball stuff. Most of the people around here at least can write a coherent sentence or two. And I suspect most of the people here don’t live in the parental basement :)

Although I have an interest in the Star Trek series, I am not really what you would call a hard-core Trekkie in the sense that I don’t need or want to know the most minute details of everything. Although there is some of that here, this place seems to have a better balance and is also better moderated. Of course, since this is mainly a news and commentary site, it would naturally be different.

I hope if forums are established here, they are an offshoot, and not the main focus. I think Mr. Pascale has indicated that, and that is good.

I’m still here and not going anywhere. There are some scary people on the official movie forum. Plus I get timed out and have to log back in almost non-stop!!!

I’m not planning on going anywhere other than here. Looking forward to the trekmovie/trekhq forums too. :)

82. Closettrekker - February 1, 2008

Not interested in a new forum. I like this site the way it is.

83. The Vulcanista - February 1, 2008

#14

Well, elmacho, you were right about the spam after registering at the new site! I’m going back to insert “nospam” somewhere in my email addy, see if that helps.

Peace. Live long and prosper.
The Vulcanista }:-|

84. I AM THX-1138 - February 1, 2008

They’ve never even sent me a confirmation e-mail. Still waiting.

Maybe they think I’m a spy for George Lucas.

85. The Vulcanista - February 1, 2008

So after I added “nospam” to my email addy, I couldn’t post, couldn’t vote in polls, couldn’t do squat.

Yep, spam is very much a part of the Trek forum.

So if anyone sees a “Vulcanista” over there, it definitely won’t be me.

Peace. Live long and prosper.
