#76: LOL! "They" don't get it "right" because "they" probably don't care about what you think. My guess is TPTB have determined you and the rest of the purists are the vocal minority and inconsequential to the financial success of their business endeaveour.

Overall all I think this article is really nice. It gives me a very nostalgic feeling to see all this old cheese from the '70s revisited. I used to have one of the McDonald's happy meal TMP boxes sitting in my closet for several years after the movie came out. Finally threw it in the trash since it was taking up space.

I used to read the Marvel comics adaptation of TMP constantly. I was always disappointed the V'ger memory wall sequence from the comic book never made it into the final movie. This sequence had a space suited Kirk being attacked by a bunch of V'ger memory crystal creature things. Spock came along and zapped the creatures off Kirk using a hand phaser.

I always wanted one of those electronic Enterprise ships from Mego but my parents thought it was too expensive. I thought it was a neat feature the ship came apart and could be reconfigured into alternate configurations by rearranging the saucer, secondary hull and nacelles.

Sadly TMP is the only Star Trek movie I have never seen in the theatre. My dad thought, at the time, the movie was boring and not worth the time and money to take me to see it. I didn't see TMP until it came out on HBO a few years later. Tried to talk my dad into buying a laser disc player just so I could see TMP before it hit HBO and broadcast back then. No dice.

#54 - I remember my mom telling me that there was something of a flap about the Klingon's redesign. I also remember she hated it and thought it was pretty damn stupid...I mean, they were redesigned so much they had NOTHING in common with their predecessors (other than the same name).

#60 - I don't know about other people, but I for one sort of do have a "retro-purist" attitude about TMP, TWOK, and onward. Not only did they change things like the Klingons, and turned the Enterprise into a lumbering tub of lard with the manuverability of a drunken cow and deflector screens made of tissue paper, but the characters of Kirk, Spock, etc were "humanized," or basically dragged down to a lower level of character, stripping away their heroic qualities that I grew to know, love, and aspire to.

So yeah...as far as I'm concerned, nothing Trek-related made past 1978 is canon. Which is why I'm not too upset about this Abrams travesty (or at least it's looking like it's going to be a travesty), because it's just the last of a LONG line of non-canon bologna, which started in 1979 and still haunts us to this very day.

Why can't they just get it right, you know??

#29:
ST:VI did have at least one cool merchandising tie in.
I walked into a dept store in a large mall not long after it came out, and they had a complete set of china (plates, bowls, coffee cups etc.) with the UFP logo, exactly matching what Capt Sulu had on his bridge (He was drinking a cup of coffee, which fell and broke after Chronos exploded). I think they wanted 50 or 75 bucks for the set, which I didn't have at the time, but I bet it's worth a small fortune now.

As far a Lucus's original SW novelization, I once read a first edition that came from scholastic books, about 3 months before the movie was released, which was substantially different from the 2nd edition which was rewritten to follow the final shooting script. In the 1st edition the lightsabre's were always referred to as "laser-swords", and there was a long first chapter about Darth Vader's origins, as a dark lord of the sith, coming from a long line of sith's etc. which makes it impossible for him to be Luke's father. I don't think there were many copies printed, and I've never been able to find another one. No wonder they got rid of the first edition LOL!!
