Comments on: “The Changeling” Remastered Screenshots + Video + Mini Review

It has dawned on me after listening to the original vs the Blu-Ray remastered of Changeling that there has been a MAJOR sound remix done here. (and for all the eps) The music sounds way fuller and of course many effects and reverbs have been very significantly enhanced. Never mind the visual effects, I could spend years just comparing the sounds mixes from the original vs the remastered, and noting all the fascinating, enriched details. What they did to the music tracks is bloody amazing.

One effect I wish they really had fixed was when Nomad is brain scanning Uhura’s head and he zaps Scotty on the Bridge. The original ripple effect of Uhura’s head in Nomad’s beam holds up well and looks incredible. Then Tjordmann cuts to another shot of Scotty getting hit by Nomad’s beam. Problem is, Uhura’s head has lost the ripple effect! CBS absolutely should have fixed that! Also Scotty’s death beam could have easily been enhanced. IMHO this is more important to fix than to do those green energy bolts. The original bolts were better.

One other little detail that seems peculiar — a dialogue change. When Spock is looking at the history computer and the dialogue is “Why do you call me the creator?”, and Nomad says “Is the usage incorrect?”

Then Spock starts up from his view port and says, “The usage is correct!”. The new mix changes Spocks phrase to “The usage is correct, Nomad.” Even in the supposedly “original” version on Blu Ray, the word Nomad has been added. Why was this done?? So that Nomad could be sure that Spock is addressing him??

So there you go, folks, proof that somebody actually changed the dialogue from the original broadcast/VHS version.

I am irritated with the remastered version they recently showed on the Fox Network. Was it censored for political correctness? In the original series Nomad said that Uhura was “a mass of conflicting emotions” and that “aborbing it unsettled me” (if I recall from watching it many years ago). Spock replied “We call it a woman.” Granted, it is sexist, but it is something from that era. Why take that away? It’s like saying we’re not going to allow “All in The Family” to air due to political correctness…

I am not a fan of the remasturbated episodes. I like the originals for what they were. It’s too bad they messed with them.

They definitely missed a number of wires which were obvious on standard def broadcast. Makes me wonder how bad it will look on BluRay and how many more wires I will notice. Simple things like this should have been included as much as the exterior shots. Even a modern audience can overlook poor sets, they still turn up today, but bad special effects puts it into the Plan 9 category. Sadly little was done in this department from hiding wires to more convincing laser and beam effects.

OK- you can argue about the dated special effects from 1984, and how that was “improved” upon through the remastering process.
Nevertheless, this is one of my all-time favorite star trek episodes. A strong and compelling story for this one.
I can see why it was used as the basis for the first Srar Trek movie.
The fact that parts of Nomad were re-used in other episodes (the Romulan cloaking device as well as the robot M4) actually adds to my appreciation for this particular episode!

#22: Try turning on your TV’s captioning… they are there, and I own the set. There are Spanish subtitles on the DVD as well if you dislike the mono.

# 87 Spock’s workstation’s light is always blue, no matter what he is looking at. We don’t exactly know what he is looking at but I can pretty much say that it does not match what’s on the screen because he pretty much sees an analysis of it.

Yep. Anyone notice, when Nomad first contacts them in English, Kirk says “Apparently, they got what they needed before the computers burned out”… but the sequence where we *see* the computers burn out was dropped.

In the old one it’s blue, in the new one it’s green.

So I’ve spotted a mistake… when Spok is looking at his science workstation he has a bright blue light shining in his face, presumably from the alien. It should be green to match the colour that it has been changed to!!

I was disappointed with this remastered one. They changed Nomad’s shot to a slow green glow that came from the side, and they changed the photon torpedoes to red when it has been blue during all the other episodes. They also didn’t change the turbo lift background behind Nomad when it comes out of sickbay. I’m not usually one to complain, but some of the effects in this episode were highly illogical.
