More Star Trek Movie Design Clues From German Toy Fair February 10, 2008
by John Tenuto , Filed under: Star Trek (2009 film), Toys , trackback
Trekmovie.com broke the story a few weeks ago that Playmates Toys has the license to the new Star Trek film. Now, Ain’t It Cool News provides coverage from the German Toy Fair occurring this weekend, and their report gives specific costume and design details from the 2008 feature based on the prototype toys available. See below for a summary.
Here are the highlights of what was on display:
- 50! action figures
- Toys include: phaser toys, a transporter playset, a toy ship of the new Enterprise, plus ‘alien ship’
- The new Enterprise is similar to the television version, yet "more organic" and with larger nacelles
- The uniforms from the movie are nearly identical to the 1960s television show
- All have black trousers plus Kirk’s uniform is the iconic yellow, Scotty’s red, and Spock’s blue (but shade or two darker)
- Uhura has classic red communication mini-skirt, but was ’sexier’
- Old Spock wears a white monk’s robe reminiscent of the 1980s movies
- The film phasers and communicators are ‘nearly identical’ to the television show, and the sounds are the same on the toy
- New transporter room playset has a red floor
- Alien spaceship toy resembles an octopus
Not only does the look of the designs sound exciting, but from a toy perspective it sounds like Playmates has a pretty good line up. This upcoming weekend is the New York Toy Fair. TrekMovie.com expects more news about the toys from the new feature film will be revealed. TrekMovie.com has correspondents headed to New York to cover the event so keep your browsers tuned to TrekMovie.com.

sounds good…i always loved these toys as a kid….first?
second! - It sounds like they haven’t changed much…rats
excited about the mini-skirt though!
Mini-skirt is sexier? My guess is fishnet stockings.
oh man, I love to see a Barbarella homage!
It all sound great to me
octopus ship kind of scares me, but hey I haven’t seen it yet… not too quick to judge!
Im very excited to hear that things are so simlar to TOS style.
Are there no pics?!
Are photos banned at these events? It’s quite tantilising to know that there are models and figures that answer so many questions about the look of the new movie, but I suppose on the other hand it would be a pity to have a flood photos of them. The production team obviously have their own plan on how to reveals bits and pieces of time to keep everyone interested.
Re: octopus
There was a poster over at TrekBBS who saw the toys at the UK’s toy fair. He described the “alien ship” as looking like a “golden squid,” similar to something seen in the Stargate:Atlantis pilot. He did think that it was a Romulan ship.
This information all jibes with his descriptions, although these are a bit clearer and easier to understand. Interesting about the larger nacelles — I wonder how much larger?
“More orgainc?” Hmmmmm
How much sexier(shorter) can a skirt be? ;-) Sounds like, at least from the toy aspect, we’re getting a strong TOS identification, but where’s some pics? ???
“more organic” — I’m guessing that just means that the lines are smoother, with fewer sharp angles. A little bit of this can be seen in the trailer, where it looks like the back portions of the nacelles are tapered into subtle “fins”.
because the action figures of the movie are already showing at toy fairs, a picture of the real costumes and the enterprsie cant be far!
It’s probably not the length of Uhura’s skirt, but the length of the neckline they’re referring to.
Peace. Live long and prosper.
The Vulcanista }:-|
Interesting. But if we can’t get spy pics of the actors, at least let’s get some spy pics of the toys!
Vorlons for octopus ship????
Aint it cool has same story also saying Uhura’s skirt is shorter and ta ta’s show more
“squidy” could be like the vorlons from Bab5.
Well, we always knew there were multiple transporter rooms on the Enterprise: perhaps we will get to see one of the “other” ones: and floor color differentiates. Then again, the platform on the original WAS red, so sounds like there’s no major change there after all.
Wow. Great news to hear the TOS era uniforms are going to turn up mostly the same!
Sounds pretty sweet! …except for the octopus…
Dammit Man! We NEED pictures…!
Motorola needs to do a “real” Star Trek Communicator cell phone…
LL&P :-)
Awesome! Sounds great.
WE DO NEED PICTURES!
#18 - at one point, Sona Mobile was deep into developing a TOS, communicator-style cell phone that, when flipped open, had a lot of TNG, LCARS-style interfaces. The last I’d heard, the firmware they’d developed was as buggy as hell and the rollout was delayed, then it dropped off the radar completely. If anyone knows anything more about that, feel free to enlighten us.
As far as the new Big E goes, it sounds/looks like it’s going to be a TOS/TMP hybrid, with turbocharged nacelles and a bigger fantail. I can dig it. And the new Uhura uniform is definitely leaning toward bringing in the T & A crowd. ;-)
50! Action Figures!?!?! Am I the only person astounded by this amount? I was getting used to Art Asylum/DST bringing out 4 or 5 per wave, but Fifty!
*Cannot wait for October* :D
Im intrigued.
Much seems consistent, yet the E seems like more of a radical departure.
Pic-tures!!!
Um, where’s the PICTURES???
I love it. I hope all those who said there is no way the uniforms would look like those “pajama’s or mini-skirts” of the 60’s and those new fans who maintained that there was no way the communicator would look like the 60’s version, are enjoying their plate of crow.
I’m also very happy that the phaser won’t be drastically changed as it remains one of the most futuristic looking weapons ever created,
And a transporter with a red floor? Very nice indeed.
Don’t know how it’s possible to make the mini-skirt any sexier than it already is, but I’m looking forward to seeing :).
Glad they’re staying faithful to the old uniforms.
Sounds very exciting.
Pictures should would have be nice.
The adventure continues….
Vulcanista: “It’s probably not the length of Uhura’s skirt, but the length of the neckline they’re referring to.”
I’m sure us Trekkie boys will give her a good look up and down.
Im gonna get that Enteprise toy to add to my other playmates collection I got em all!!
dang. Found the fair’s homepage and it’s in German. Plugged in Star Trek, got nothing. Went to BabelFish and translated Star Trek into German. Turns out it’s Stern Trek. (??? Is it???) Went back, plugged that in, but still got nothing. Did find out the Paris Hilton, the human Barbie, has a line of dolls coming out. Let’s just pray they don’t come with toy cars.
Anyone got any other ideas for grabbing pics?
Yes to the Uniforms!
If the ship is really “more organic” then I can only commend the designers, as it goes against the “chunky” and “industrial” design ethic of contemporary dark scifi and its proponents (including John Eaves, funny enough - see E-E) and is very much in favor of the concept of the original designers who proposed a clean and smooth look as a truly futuristic design.
If you read the AICN article it mentions Spock’s ring, could this be a spoiler?
50? God, just when I thought my collecting was done! Now I have to figure out (so to speak) which “Wars/Trek” toys must go to make room in the home office. Hard choices will have to be made.
Oh yeah, and where are those pictures?? Roberto, JJ, hellooo . . . you promised. :-)
Ah the joys of merchandising , this where the franchise really cashes in . I have to admit I would love to see some pictures of the stuff.
At toy shows like this, it is impossible to take pictures. You aren’t allowed in the room with cameras or cell-phones that take pictures. Many toy shows like this make you sign non-disclosure agreements. If you are caught taking pictures, it is a sure bet that you have attended your last toy fair, which to a toy distinutor, is a very bad deal. And toy distributors are who make up the largest segment of those attending. I had no hopes that this ws going to be where we got leaked photos of anything because security is T-I-G-H-T.
The stuff sounds cool though. Hopefully it is better than the TMNT stuff.
The costumes look like TOS and Uhura has the sexy mini-skirt? This movie can do no wrong for me now.
LOL @ #24 jonboc - if I recall the recent comments of Chris Doohan correctly, he stated that he was impressed by the high quality of the costumes. It’s not outside of the realm of possibility that, by investing in the tailoring, detail, and materials in the recreating the TOS uniforms, they couldn’t give birth to something that harkens directly back to the velour jammies we all know, but now looks like a Brooks Brothers business suit. I think it was Karl Urban himself that said this movie was like going from old, analog monoraul, to a full-blown, hi-def mutlimedia broadacast.
Well damn!
I thought JJ would take this thing to the future….and it sounds like we’re stuck in the technicolor past. I have to say….I’m disappointed this reboot is relying to heavily on the designs from TOS - especially the costumes. UGH!
The updated technology in Enterprise and realistic designes were one of the only appealing things from that series.
I don’t expect the non-trek fan to repspond to this retro crap - so we can anticipate that this film…past the first weekent….will likely TANK!!!
Um…yeah…the word I was going for was “distributor”. I swear on proof reading I had it right. I did eat a lot of ice-cream just now, though.
Oh yeah, I also meant “was”.
It’s such a lightning rod topic so I’ve not said much on this, but a lot of those details reported makes me happy. Close to the original show designs - priceless.
21- Of course they need 50 action figures, you’ve got Ma and Pa Kirk, Spock’s folks, the 3 Spocks, the two(i’m still hopin for 3) Kirks, and the multitude of unknown redshirts consigned to horrible painful deaths. and even though i’m 21 i’m gonna be at my local wal-mart the instant these babies go on sale. man this is exciting!
I hope Spock gets to play a tune in this one.
Sirbroiler38- These bits of news concerning uniforms seems to be met with happiness and excitement by all here except for you. Why would that be? Are you a TOS fan at all? The movie takes place in a timeline where these were the uniforms worn on the Enterprise, and for months many of us here have been hoping the uniforms would conform to that standard. And, despite your apparent wish that the movie will “tank”, I have a feeling the viewing public will indeed embrace this new ST experience in Dec.
So we weren’t delusional about the nacelles in the trailer…they ARE bigger after all!!
I’m very happy to know that the uniforms and gadgetry are basically identical to those used on the show; at least we’ll get to see SOME of TOS on the Big Screen, even if we still haven’t seen the real Big E.
All of a sudden I’m feeling a lot more optimistic about this movie!!
first people complain its not canon, then it appears they will be or very close and people bitch..for F’s sake..if you dont like it get the f of these forums and watch Stargate Atlantis!!!
nerdss..
I imagine a lot of these figures will be aliens. I’m sure they want to sell lots of toys like Star Wars does, and alien figures is where its at!
#42, well since he now has a ring as well…maybe he’ll sing BILBO BAGGINS!
;-)
As soon as I saw (Trekmovie.com) the Spocks shade or two (trekmovie.com) darker bullet, I immediately thought of the big hullaballo over (trekmovie.com) Singer’s Superman costume canonicity. :P
Stay tuned to trekmovie.com for more trekmovie.com news.
I’m sorry, I had to make fun of the multiple cues to the site at the end of the article. No insult intended. :D Hey! Think of them as meta-keywords!
#25: I’m thinking it’s along the lines and cut of Mirror T’Pol’s TOS science-officer uni in “In a Mirror Darkly.” Much more form fitting, skirt’s just ever-so slightly more flared, *much* lower cut neckline.
And, honestly, guys, I just *don’t* see how Uhura’s skirt can get any shorter and still be called a skirt. Two more inches, and it’s a blouse.
Peace. Live long and prosper.
The Fashionista }:-|
Hey — Spiderman’s current costumes “look” about the same as the one worn in the 70’s TV series. Oh, of course the new movie costumes cost hundreds of thousands of dollars each. Anyone want to go back? I think the velour jammies will give way to some very smart-looking unis. I love the designs. Done with modern materials and craftsmanship, the unis will look gorgeous — especially Zoe’s little red dress!
Spock has a ring, huh?
One Ring to rule them all
And in the Franchise bind them
At Paramount, where the shadows lie.
Peace. Live long and prosper.
The Vulcanista }:-|
You know, the whole concept of the male vs female versions of the starfleet uniforms never made sense in terms of storyline (it makes perfect sense in terms of marketing.) If society is supposed to be so far beyond racism and misunderstanding as TOS and TNG continually attempted to present itself to be, why would starfleet clearly go with what is clearly a sexist depiction of its female members. Just a thought.
I’ll believe it when I see it. Maybe.
#52
What’s sexist about hot chicks in short dresses?
52- “why would starfleet clearly go with what is clearly a sexist depiction of its female members.”
Sexy and sexist are too different animals. Anyone who’s got “sexy” co-workers knows that people still “use it” as they go up the ladder. Uhura is a commissioned officer. If she wants to “use it,” that’s her business. I’m sure Starfleet HR steps in if things get out of control. Of course, she’d probably handle it herself with a sharp “Sorry, neither!”
this film is going to be very cool. I just hope it doesn’t come across as being too retro now! sounds like its all going to fit into canon nicely. Also, the weird sounding alien ship sounds good, its about time star trek had some truly alien aliens in it!
IMHO, the designs of the classic phaser and comm were so ahead of their times and iconic that they could have easily been left intact.
Maybe they actually were! That would be so cool- but then again I’m not only a Trek geek, I’m a Trek PROP geek… a whole other level.
#29 Try Raumschiff Enterprise.
Pictures, where’s my pictures damnit?
I find it amusing that some here actually complain that things are not changed more… you really can’t please everyone….
#52
Because by the time the 23rd century rolls around, nobody sees the female Starfleet unis as sexist anymore? And if anyone gives a 23rd century female Starfleet officer any lip about her uni, she can kick their butts into the next quadrant? :)
Peace. Live long and prosper.
The Vulcanista }:-|
Considering the sexy/sexism argument here…..considering the skirt issue
In a future on Earth with no money, what is the punishment for sexism in the workplace?
You can’t exactly get sued. And a prison term is bit excessive.
What do you do????
#62
Sexual harrassment in the 23rd century would warrant a rehabilitative trip to the feminist compound in Idaho. Ergo, there is no sexual harrassment in the 23rd century.

OK, we went from toys at a German Toy Fair… to sexual harassment.
Dang, I gotta knock off the cordrazine.

Why do they always have compounds in Idaho?”
Less people per capita to annoy?

#67: Cordrazine? Are you MAD?? Stick with the Romulan ale, my friend. Much safer.
And given the costume design spoilerette, it was a logical progression.

HOT DAMN!!!
THIS makes me happy, hearing that the uniforms and classic landing gear equipment are near identical!
Going boldly forward while remembering your roots is something I can handle
as for those looking for photos, some will likely come from the New york fair, but security is very high at these shows! There will only be pictures if they want them out there!.
I do hope these figures are sharper in detail than the original Playmates line… I’m looking forward to them!
Don’t make me smack Uhura like Joachim did. How do I see pictures? ;)
Well, Jorg, you fly to Germany a couple of days ago with your toy distributor credentials and passes to attend the toy fair. Then, without security seeing you do so, you snap a couple of highly sought after pics of the prototype toys on display. Then you, well, look at them.
Other than that, you are SOL.
All I can say is…
YESSS! :D
RE: 51 Ah Jeez who let the LOTR weirdos on here? and they call us Trekkies nerds pshhh!
just messin with ya
What people seem to forget is that attitudes and fashions don’t merely evolve, the Revolve. They come, they go, they come back, they leave, they come back, etc. Who knows but that the time of TOS mirrors the 60’s, and maybe the 2060’s, and maybe the 2160’s? And by that time, sexy has made a comeback without the sexism and chauvanism.
Comdr67#- Cordrazine, sir? You’re going to wake up in depression-era New York city with no Kirk and Spock to shove you back through the Guardian… Listen to Vulcanista and go with the Romulan ale (of course you could always use a rum chaser with that).
Vulcanista- Fever broke last night …still feel like Kirk probably felt after being beaten half-to-death in The Empath (but he did look good hanging up there shirtless, didn’t he). How did shopping for Cancun go (and I’m still going to press you for the next two months to make holy pilgrimage to Burbank for Sci-Fi Slam…)?
Is it me or has anyone though about this before. Big nacells, squid like ships and rumors about the romlans! http://www.starfleet-museum.org Looks like te boys have done thier homework!
“oh man, I love to see a Barbarella homage!”
…What? Everyone stripping out of spacesuits with double-walled helmets that flow away to reveal what’s inside because the liquid is mercury? Or Kirk getting stuck in the Orgasmatron while the Romulan villan, Dr. Nero Nero plays the appropriate muzak for him to achieve fatal orgasm?
I’m hoping that the uniforms are still made out of the same “easy-rip” material as they used to be!
#74, Aw, Paul, you didn’t like my poem?
And I was a Trek nerd long before I was a LOTR weirdo, BTW!
Messin’ witcha right back! :)

Vulcanista do you need to make three posts in row and need to paste a ’sig’ with each one?
Denise43 -
No - I don’t want this movie to tank. I want it to be a success so Trek lives!!!
And yes, I am a fan of TOS. In fact, I’m proud to say I’m a fan of ALL Trek - even Enterprise.
Yes - I understand that this movie is set in the TOS time frame - but I don’t subscribe to the notion that you have to make the design of a movie made in 2008 match the production design of a television series made in 1965. That vision of the future, with all its idealism and creativity, was still a bit off in my opinion. From the Day-Glo colors, the embarrassingly short skirts and the high-heeled boots - absolutely IMPRACTICAL for exploring space and completely unbeileivable.
There’s a reason the TOS-era design was punchline in ‘Trials and Tribble-ations” and “In A Mirror Darkly”
I’ll go see this movie - and for the most part I will enjoy it because I am a fan of Trek. But I can guarantee that most non-Trek fans will find it hard to suspend their disbelief when they are exposed to a retro view of the future. This is the most expensive Trek adventure ever, and it will take a hell of a lot of non-fans and repeat viewings to make it a success.
Trek is about moving forward - about the future. Even though we’re technically “going back” in this film - I was hopeful that there would be some realism injected into the production, and we’d see a more modern interpretation of Roddenberry’s universe.
So if all of this - my hope for Trek success - and my fear that the old ways will hurt, more than help the franchise - makes me a bad fan then so be it.
I’ve been all over these forums expressing my support for JJ for a long time when everyone else was bitching. I’ll still be there on opening day and hope he proves me wrong - and that this film revives trek for the next generation of fans.
Are cameras forbidden at a toy fair? (I don’t mean that as sarcasm, just genuinely curious on this point).
Octopus = Krenim Imperium temporal incursion ship from ‘Enterprise’.
#83, Well, yeah at the time I did. If the sig bothers you, I’ll stop doing it.
I dont want pictures. I want the toys!
- The uniforms from the movie are nearly identical to the 1960s television show -
The legendary uniforms belong to TOS. STXI is supposed to be an enhancement, a re-whatever. IMO, putting unknowns into the iconic uniforms would only demonstrate that Abrams & Co. are not as confident in their “new” vision as they want to make us believe. It would seem they bank on the uniforms providing at least some of the recognizability the film could really use.
>Kirk; Spock; Old Spock; McCoy; Scotty; Uhura; Sulu; Chekov; Nero; Pike; Sarek; Amanda; George Sr, Winona…
That’s 14 characters bound to get figures. And that’s before we even get to the inevitable minor characters like ‘transporter chief’ and ‘redshirt #3 (impaled by javelin)’; ‘redshirt #8 (drained by fibre vampire)’ etc.
Plus there’s bound to be some duplication of figures like ‘Academy Uniform Kirk’ and such. 50 sounds about right.
I think this film will do well ‘because’ they’re doing the classic look.
This could be THE film we’ve been waiting for all these years. Come on…Classic Star Trek ‘IS’ Star Trek!
#91 “Classic Star Trek ‘IS’ Star Trek!”
Yep.
I thought the movy would take place in the time between “The Cage” and the second pilot. The crew should wear the uniforms from that time, not the uniforms from the series. And why the hell is Uhuras uniform “sexier”. Isn`t the female TOS uniform sexy enought? Who wants to see a slut in a star trek movie?
All of that sounds awesome!
#93…
Um… it’s a new big budget moivie, not a recreation of a pilot episode that was only seen once. Have to be realistic here.
me & you need to get laid once every 10 years
“Who wants to see a slut in a star trek movie?”
The designs sound good so far. But I will have my final opinion upon viewing.;) Beam me up!
#93… I am assuming your last question is rhetorical, and intended to be humorous. This is TOS, remember.
“Organic”? How can anyone be more vague? And yeah, of course, you go to such an event and you never happened to think about bringing a camera.
I’m sorry, but until I’ll see actual evidence of this, I’ll continue to regard any of these everyday insiders’ reports as BS.
#99, cameras of any type are not allowed at these events.
But I trust the report, all sounds good to me.
You know what would be very funny? If the person making the report was merely seeing toys that ARE the original crew with their old uniforms, new toys based on them, that is.. and mistook it for the new crew and new uniforms!
That would be funny to me, after all the various reactions here.
What I read about the Enterprise being nearly identical to the show, and the uniforms being nearly identical, is very interesting.
I rembmber a quote, I think it was from Roberto Orci, that fans would be surprised as to how close it was to the original series.
The Canonistas may actually have very little to complain about here.
#93–”I thought the (movie) would take place in the time between “The Cage” and the second pilot. The crew should wear the uniforms from that time, not the uniforms from the series.”
The film is said to “jump around’ to various time periods. it could very well be that significantly more of the story will take place in the time we know as post-pilot TOS.
I wonder if, since Roberto talks TNG as being his favorite Trek, that he might have taken a nod from “Tin Man” in imagining that “octopus” ship. What if it is a creature that can travel through timelines at will, and the Romulans catch wind of its existence?
I know Tin Man didn’t look like an octopus! I just suggest the possibility that that “octopus” ship might be an organic creature.
Red Shirt out!
@95 If you are able to bring updated TOS uniforms on the big screen, you can also do this with the older uniforms from the 2 pilot episodes.
http://memory-alpha.org/de/wiki/Bild:Signalmeister_J.M._Colt.jpg
This is the version for women. It is sexy and not sexist and more realistic. According to Abrahms, the new movie is being made for a new audience and will be a mirror for our time, not for the 60`s. I realy like the TOS uniforms, especially the female edition, but they are nothing for a reimigination or what the new movie will be.
Wow, so some of the original series costume design and colors and prop design is going to be fairly faithful after all. I just love merchandising leaks… Now, all I need to be totally happy is confirmation that the long black booted, shortened, slightly flared, pocketless black pants are also in place, and this adventure is ON!
-STAR TREK remains STAR TREK after all…
I’m guessing we are going to see an Enterprise crew photo very soon. Just a hunch from one fan to another.
SirBroiler:
You’re an idiot.
Star Trek is not “about” going forward.
That’s absolute nonsense.
Star Trek is about whatever TPTB behind it decide it will be about.
And this is a TOS inspired film, not a reboot or continuation of TNG.
So quit your whining.

My Spidey senses are tingling! Someone is gonna get a warning from Anthony soon! Play nice!
#102–I wouldn’t count on that, unfortunately. The “canonistas”, “canonites”, or whatever, will find something.
SirBroiler:
I apologize. I lost my temper.
The truth is, however, I have to wonder if you’re not bordering on trolling.
But I digress. I’m not a moderator.
Right, Red Shirt?
Vader
That makes me very optimistic at the moment. The uniforms have been worrying me for months. I’d be horrified if they were anything like the TMP uniforms. *puke*
I hope the bridge still has the bright colours like the series. That’s something I wished they’d have changed about the movies was that the bridge looked like a hospital with all the stark grey and beige and white.

I think some people need to calm down
also I see a lot of people doing ‘post floods’ where you post numerous times in a row…that is spamming.
can people find ways to argue your points without getting personal…and also making multiple posts in a row doesnt make your argument any better…just takes up more space

It’s nothing to do with a lack of confidence, it’s set in the mid 23rd century and those are the uniformes of that period. They are simply respecting Trek’s, for want of a better word, history. If you were setting a story during the Civil War period you wouldn’t have the Union soldiers wearin camoflage would you?
#89–He is not simply “putting unknowns into the iconic uniforms”. He is resurrecting the younger versions of characters who are far more iconic than those costumes. The characters are the icons. I am thankful for the nostalgic nod with the uniforms. Are you really going to thumb your nose at this remarkable tribute to those fantastic characters just because you are angry at a certain casting omission? “That guy” is getting the ultimate tribute. May WE ALL receive such respect for OUR work–40+ years from now!
This only confirms that the crew is going to make a great movie. The look will be great too. There is just too much at stake to screw this up.
Thanks Anthony,
You are right, lots of people who post get so arrogant and personel,it’s all to do with hiding behind a computer and not much else going on in their life.
At least what I saw last week is now valid, warp nacelles are like the enterprise koener did except no transparent top.
Was that explained well enough for you Cranston?
Debush 24
We saw photos of some actors in uniform, including Pine. These were not the TOS uniforms. Of course they could be from the altered more warlike timeline, or the Academy.
I think there is a good chance that the action figure uniforms are either an intentional deceit for secrecy, or a temporary “men at work” sign, and the real ones are simply not ready yet.
There is a glimmer of hope, and that’s the 1st teaser poster insignia dessigns, after which Anthony designed the site.
Where are the Pilot uniforms?
#118
I feel very confident that based on the reports from Trekmovie and James Cawley’s own comments that for at least some of the film, the characters are in their TOS version of the costumes.
I just checked out Roddenberry.com over in the thread about Valentine’s Day, and the TOS female duty uniform is called a “skant.”
A scant skirt, perhaps?
Peace. Live long and prosper.
The Vulcanista }:-|
Generally it is allowed to take photos at the Nuremburg toy fair, but there are several booths that have a sign that explicitly forbids it. Also, some toys are only shown behind “closed doors”. I assume the ST toys fall in one of these two categories. However, if the fair was open to the public and not restricted to bussiness and press, I’d guess some sneaky guy would avoid all these obstacles and manage to take some pictures.
With 50 figures maybe in the movie time is changing over and over again so the crew’s uniforms keep changing in each time change. Maybe Kirk and the crew have 5 different uniforms for the different changes in time plus all the cast. You could have uniforms like TOS then some like in Wrath of Khan or completely different from anything we have seen in Star Trek.
This sounds very, very good. I’m all in favour of adding some more detail to the props. Needless to say, I will be BUYING the communicator and phaser toys for my costume. :)
Oh, and might I say that a tricorder would be welcome too… are you listening, Abrams and co.? :)
I’m suspecting that the phaser and communicator are just going to be repaints of the ones Playmates put out in the 90s.
Hmmm, the thing I wonder, is will there be enough lead-free Star Trek toys in pipeline in time for the X-mas shopping season? I think even in these modern times, a minimum of 6 months is needed for a good ramp up, but I guess that’ll also depend on retail orders… This version of the Enterprise, with her more organic lines… I’m the most curious to see pics of it. *HINT< HINT*
FWIW, I think the term ‘organic’ is getting somewhat misinterpreted in the mix. The Enterprise D could be considered ‘organic’, if one wants to compare it to the boxy architecture of the TOS E, but the words ’sleek’, or ’streamlined’ would seem (to me, anyway) like the first words someone would use in making that comparison. Again, I go back to Karl Urban’s statement about analog vs. hi-def - I think what we’ll see is more along the lines of actual seams along bulkheads and hull plating, more bolts, conduits, cables, access hatches and ports, both inside and outside the ship. A lot of little things that’ll give it a more defined sense of size, power, and functionality.
scants were for Trek men actually. Check TNG pilot

Yes, that was nice and clear. Thank you.
BTW, I really did appreciate your posts over at TrekBBS, and I expressed my thanks at the time. My comment in post # 8 on this thread was mainly referring to the fact that there is more detail in this more recent report, but yes, it is a bit clearer too. But it was not meant in any way to slam your earlier contributions.
I am looking forward to the rumored “Spock’s Ring.” I’ve always wanted to try on a Spock Ring.
Totally hope they have the pilot uniform colours, at least at some point… I dug the just gold and blue… and the women in those crazy-blousy velour tops and tight trousers. Grrr-rrr.
Wait, now that I think about it, maybe the men were also in too-tight trousers and blousy tops too. Grrr-rrr-rrr.
And I hope there’s a unicorn.
#130 Roddenberry.com calls the TOS female duty uniform Skants as well.
Peace. Live long and prosper.

Ok, bright clean uniforms. Over emphasized Starship. Young actors. I believe all these things add up to a younger audience. Children can relate to the simple colors of the uniform. The over visual of the ships engines. Seems to me the visual will be simple to appeal to everyone. While concetrating on the script and story. It may work.
I agree with Broiler on this:
The TOS uniforms were good for the 60’s. For the 70’s TMP, they redesigned them. For the 80’s films, they redesigned them again (the best uniform IMHO for the 23rd century era).
For TNG, even they redesigned them for the 3rd season so they wouldn’t look like the silly jumpsuits they were for the first 2 seasons.
DS9’s redesign eventually gave way to the look from “First Contact”, again the best design for the newer crew. The 25th century versions we saw in the TNG and Voyager finales were a step backward.
So, yes, I think having the uniforms of TOS on a 100 foot film screen in 2008 is a bad idea and won’t help it’s chances with the mainstream public that needs to embrace it and make it a financial success to ensure MORE.

While the redesigned uniforms from the 80s can look cool, they don’t make any sense. Why would someone from the 23rd century dress like Captain Nemo? And they have nothing in common with the TOS uniforms. I still think the TMP uniforms are the more futuristic and realistic ones (even though probably I am the minority here). In fact I think production-wise, TMP is still the best Trek ever made. Everything on that movie is so carefully thought and designed (aside the loose screenplay, of course). I really hope the new movie can top the production values of that movie. ST II, while a much better movie drama-wise, is so full of non-sense, like Nemo uniforms, torpedoes that look like coffins, excessively dark interiors, etc. Those can look cool on screen, but doesn’t seem as much a realistic vision of the future as TMP.
Actually the 50+ figures comes out to about 16-17 figures of each character.
50 divided by 3
There are 4″, 6″ and (9″ or 12″) figures.
Jay
Where’s my post? Why are my posts not showing up?? ARRRGHHH!!!!
Oops, not 16-17 of each character, you know what I mean…
Ahhh, that’s better…I do have some sensation of posting now…
Ok — Why do we have Romulan Octopus of Prey in this film? Why can’t we just have the traditional Balance of Terror Bird of Prey?
Orci? You out there??
What’s up with the GOLD Octopus of Prey?
And what’s with Spock’s Ring? What? Is he gonna break out into singing a round of “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins” in this film?
LOL!!!!
I think that if you asked 10 Trek fans what color the sky is, they would argue about the shade of blue it is or should have been. Or that it was bluer when they were kids. Or that they shouldn’t make a movie with a blue sky. Or that it’s always cloudy from their perspective.
There are four lights.
No, there’s five.
The lights aren’t even on.
I hate lights, I wish they were candles.
All over this stuff.
Even though I dislike a lot of things about Generations
I remember hiting up all the K-Marts for the toys.
Now we have Targets!
Good hunting!
Hope they do not make scarce ones on purpose
like the KIRK SPACE SUIT figure from Generations.
Please make anuff old Spocks!
If there are 50 figures ( 4″ 6″ 9″) with 16 different actors made into figures the 16 would be 4″figures then a less number of the actors would be made into the 6″and 9″ figures I would think to make it to 50 figures.

I agree about the uniforms.
The TMP uniforms made sense in the context of a starship of the future. The TWOK uniforms were absurd. WHY would would Starfleet make everyone wear those formal uniforms all day, every day?
Simply impractical.
Next in line for practicality AND good looks would be the early DS9 jumpsuits (notice, I didn’t say Voyager.)
The FC-style uniforms, while looking decent, featured unnessesarily heavy material. Again, WHY?

For the love of all that is holy and good, NO!
