As to confirm Pegg’s fandom anyone who has seen the sitcom he create called ‘Spaced’ (which is fantastic) will have noted the few bits of Trek memorabilia lying about.

“Penelope” came out in US theatres on March 29. I don’t know if has been out in Europe yet. I have to ask my relatives in the UK. It stars Christina Ricci and James McAvoy . I think actress Resse Witherspoon directed the film. It was kind of a modern-day fairytail. Parts of it were filmed in London. Nick Frost had a small part in the movie. Actor Burn Gorman who plays Dr. Owen Harper in the “Torchwood” TV seried played a reporter in the movie.

That would be oh so funny. I would like to see that as a sub-plot in a future Star Trek TV show or movie. To have both Harry Mudd and Cyrano Jones running a con on the Enterprise crew would make for excellent comedy. Both characters are such over-the-top rougues.

was just about to post along the same lines but saw that you had beaten me to it.

as co-writer of ’spaced’ simon pegg clearly has a geek’s knowledge of sci-fi / horror / fantasy to equal the best (or should that be worst?) of us and the frequent references to iconic movies and tv shows are all used in ‘tribute’ to the original source as opposed to taking the piss.

i have no doubt that pegg is a geek and proud of it and I’d wager he knows a damn sight more about trek than most of, if not all, of his fellow ‘reincarnations’.

(Before this last comment generates a return to the very tired topic of whether or not the new cast members should have intimate knowledge of all things trek, I’d like to mention that IMO their preference towards ST as entermainment prior to landing these roles is completely irrelevant. as professional actors i’d expect anyone to research the role as a matter of course – prior knowledge of the source material should only facilitate an easier assimilation into the role)

simon pegg will be brilliant as scotty! anyone who doubts that shoud really really really watch ’spaced’

I would LOVE to see Nick Frost play either Cyrano Jones or Harry Mudd. I think he would be funny. Both characters have a lot of potential as comic adversaries for the Enterprise crew. BTW, I saw him in “Penelope” a couple of weeks ago. While he had a small part in the film, he was funny as always.

Pegg’s awesome! I still laugh out loud when he delivers the line, “What’s the matter, Danny? Haven’t you ever taken a shortcut before?” in both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, with different results in each film. Seems like such a cool guy to just hang out with. He’s going to rock as Scotty! Also catch Spaced if you’ve never seen it.
