Day of the Vipers is freaking great. I just finished reading it last night - Act 3 kept me turning pages until 5 in the morning. Don't read it for Trek's sake - read it because you want to enjoy one hell of a great piece of fiction. It won't disappoint.

Decloaking . . .
20. Jed
@Commodore Lurker: What is up withthe “Decloaking….Recloaking….” stuff?
Jed: To make a long story short and a short story interesting: I had lurked around this site for about six months and never intended to post. One day I had something to say, hence Commodore = age & Lurker. The Decloaking . . . because I intended to post once and disappear again without any intention of posting again, hence Recloaking.
One thing lead to another and I've become somewhat of a regular. The cloaks have become a tradition I guess or a signature. Just as my dear friend "The Vulcanista" has her thing.
One day I expect to recloak and be gone for quite a while.
And that is the short story! Thanks for asking. }:-Q

For #4 and anyone else, the authors and editors at Pocket make every effort to make their novels as accessible as possible to the Trek fan. Some books may reference episode events, but all the info you need should be in the story in case you've never seen the episode. And as a prequel, this concern is removed. So as long as you have a passing understanding of the DS9 elements, you should be ok. And even if you don't, hey, it's sci-fi -- no one knows what's going on in a sci-fi novel until the author sets the scene. And James Swallow is an excellent writer. I'm two chapters in and really enjoying it. Weighing in at a meaty 498 pages of smallish print, it looks to be a nice ride.

#17 - Actually, Book 3 in the "Errand of Fury" series is slated for next year. The author had some 'real life' business that delayed work on the book.

The best thing about the novels is that new ones are still being published. Can't say that about TV shows.

4, it shouldn't matter that you read this book first before watching DS9 (which is my second favorite Star Trek series after TNG) and it should add to your enjoyment of DS9.

I love the 24th century era as my three favorite series are TNG, DS9, VOY in that order. Since most of the books take place in the 24th century I especially enjoy reading them. With that said one of my favorite book series is the TOS era "Errand of Fury" series because it shows the security team as something more than the "red shirts" and actually shows how critical they are to the ship and its mission. I'm still waiting for CBS/Paramount to finally publish book 3 in the series (the first 2 have been published but not the 3rd yet because they apparently want to leave the 23rd century alone for a while.)

13, I'm a fan that does both. I read the Star Trek novels (when I have time between school and work) and I play the games. My favorite is the Elite Force series followed closely by the Starfleet Command series. I also love the Armada series, Klingon Honor Guard, Away Team, in fact I like all of the games (with the exception of Starship Creator which isn't really a game.) With the exception of a few books ("Before Dishonor" being one I didn't like) I love all the Star Trek books and add such a rich history to the Star Trek universe and offers a unique look at everything in Star Trek. The "Lost Era" books are particularly interesting.
