I just finished reading it last night - Act 3 kept me turning pages until 5 in the morning. Don't read it for Trek's sake - read it because you want to enjoy one hell of a great piece of fiction. Some books may reference episode events, but all the info you need should be in the story in case you've never seen the episode. And as a prequel, this concern is removed. So as long as you have a passing understanding of the DS9 elements, you should be ok. And even if you don't, hey, it's sci-fi -- no one knows what's going on in a sci-fi novel until the author sets the scene. And James Swallow is an excellent writer. I'm two chapters in and really enjoying it. Weighing in at a meaty 498 pages of smallish print, it looks to be a nice ride.
