Thanks for the spirited debate! I have a huge respect for Mr. Nimoy- I wouldn’t want anyone to think otherwise. And, GO, you have my respect as well. You are obviously a thoughtful person who bravely faces fear everyday. Live long and prosper, my friend!

Thanks for posting this link, Anthony. Nimoy gave honest, unflappable replies to some pretty weird and intrusive questions. He’s a class act.

And no one should fault him for getting into politics, as he was only responding to a line of query. He didn’t bring it up himself.

Nimoy’s reading of the state of journalism is right on target -there is no reason why Brittney and Paris and all of these other irresponsible young people should get any coverage whatsoever. The public is not being served by celebrity gossip being presented as “news”. Additionally, why didn’t the writer of the interview article with Nimoy put his text through “spellcheck” before publication?

How did a post on Leonard Nimoy and the Spock character devolve into another mind-numbingly dumb battle of Red States vs. Blue States? Agree to disagree, and move on! Make your true feelings known in November; when it counts! Anyway, I feel Nimoy has as much right to espouse his liberal views just as Tom Selleck does for his conservative views. By brandishing most/all of Hollywood as “liberals” (NOT a dirty word, by the way), one makes a generalizing statement based on perception, not necessarily fact. As Spock would remind us, celebrate Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations! Save the Red/Blue crap for November, when it’ll mean something!

And as for the example on how Kirk would respond to terrorism… he might not warp outta town, but he would also not bring in all of Starfleet to wreak havoc on said planet and on all neighboring systems…

Why not come live in Israel in my place for a few years. Raise your children here. Think twice about entering a mall packed full of people. Avoid the buses. In other words, see how an iron fist on terrorism (and on an entire Muslim population) does nothing but promote further violence and hatred over the years. Maybe… just maybe you’ll get a new perspective out of it.

And yeah, I’d much rather have to hear what Heston has to say, much as I despise his fascist ramblings, than have EVERYBODY’S political opinions silenced.

Respectfully, I never said Mr. Nimoy shouldn’t have freedom of speech. He has it and is using it. I never said his opinion “should be silenced” either. I would simply prefer that he keep it to himself. Personal politics are just that- personal. That’s why it’s considered tacky to walk out of a polling place and ask the guy next to you, “Who’d ya vote for?”

You’re making my point. “Shut your yaps!” is hardly the tolerant view I bet you claim to espouse. And to be honest, I would prefer not to hear Heston’s views, Selleck’s views, Heaton’s views, etc. either. I simply want to enjoy their work as actors. As far as Arnold goes, he’s a FORMER actor turned politician; his views are on display for all the world to see.

Because this is a Star Trek site, I offer this:

The Enterprise enters the unexplored PersiaGulf system.
Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and a red shirt beam down to the class M planet, Iraqq. They meet a group of inhabitants who call themselves the Kurd-ites.
Shortly after their first contact, a sudden gas attack occurs. Several Kurd-ites are killed along with Ensign Red Shirt. The landing party soon learns that the planet is controlled by a brutal dictator who rules with an iron fist, threatens nearby systems, and has previously invaded the two neighboring planets. It is also rumoured that the dictator is working on a doomsday weapon that will cement his power and keep his neighbors paralyzed in a state of fear. Does Kirk follow the Prime Directive, beam up, and warp outta town? Based on the Star Trek we’ve all watched over and over again, what does Kirk do next . . ?

I really enjoy reading any and all interviews by Mr. Nimoy (although I do wish that whoever typed up this transcript had done some proofreading, this is plain hard to decypher in places). I have both “I am not Spock” and “I am Spock” books, and certainly, people who claimed that Nimoy “hated” Spock because of the title of the first book, have not read the book past the title cover.

I am absolutely thrilled that the original Spock returns in the new movie. I’m a huge fan of Mr. Nimoy (yes, i’ve seen him in other movies and shows, not just Star Trek), and it has nothing to do with his political views (incidentally, I happen to agree with him, but again, it has nothing to do with his wonderful talent as an artist).
