Say what you will about Shat's acting style - The man knew his shit and could take some of the most difficult dialog and situations and inject a sense of emotion/pathos to it. Unlike Quinto, Pine has know one on the set to use as a guide, and unlike actors who have jumped into roles before (all the actors who have playes James Bond or Superman) one person and one person alone has inhabited the role of James T Kirk for over 40 years (no disrespect to James Cawley). That's a big shadow to escape. When you take that into account, what little I was able to see during a location shoot, was a remarkable performance.
