73. DesiluTrek Right on funny I got those sames feelings some years back watching this episode. There is some quality I really dug about the first season. Some mood and feel it had. It is so ironic that of all the various STAR TREK series this one started out strong where as the others started out a bit weaker than became stronger. Also with the music it was so much stronger and better than any of the other ST series. Most of the music from the spin offs seems so bland when you compare it to the TOS series!

@Andy -- That caught my ear too, and I couldn't believe it. For some reason they used the original soundtrack of the early-early first-season score, the one that's very heavy on high-pitched electronicized strings that I believe was arranged by Courage himself. The first-season theme they remastered is the Fred Steiner arrangement that most people are used to. I'm also stumped as to why they reverted to the original early version over the new CGI credits.

Hey,

I'm watching Conscience of the King right now and it sure sounds like they're using the original first season theme. And I mean, not a remastered version of the theme song. Anybody know anything about this? Maybe I'm wrong but it sure sounds like those guys from the '60's. That trumpet vibrato those guys were doing back then. All those guys who used to play big band who were then sequeing into the studio system. Guys who had old world training in European orchestras and then came over to play under Stokowski in the NBC orchestra. Cool. I loved the sound those old guys had. If it's redone version - I like, I like.

Sounds like you forgot the extended scene in the briefing room or Pike viewing the other aliens for the fist time from his cage or the scene where the Talosians were scanning the Enterprise's databanks. In fact it sounds as if you've forgotten so much of what could be redone you probably should go back and rewatch the episode THEN make a post comment!

"Conscience of the King" has been a personal favorite, one that normally doesn't crack most fans' top 10. As I'm also a big fan of classic soundtracks, I especially love the score by Joseph Mullendore, perfect music for Star Trek's most obvious reach at Shakespearean pretensions. In the edits for syndication it takes some awkward cuts, including a couple of lines from Uhura's song. The "lounge mix" in the cocktail party scene (on The Best of ST Vol. II CD) has the classic TV hallmark of being a form of reprise of the series theme, which to me always felt like a breaking of the fourth wall -- Captain Kirk and Lenore Karidian and the other party-goers are enjoying a cocktail version of the theme from Star Trek?

Barbara Anderson (of 'Ironside' less than a year later) is a knockout, and it's the second of Bruce Hyde's only two shows as Riley -- he was great, plus had the good luck to be in two great shows.

"Conscience of the King" has that great first-season look and feel, one of a series that seemed to be reaching for more serious drama than the turn it took toward more action-adventure in the second and third seasons.
