2. CmdrR

"I repeat that I believe TOS-R is only the first go-around. I think there will be another, more detailed approach in the not too distant future."

I hope you are right, personally I don’t see any point in buying these versions. I have the originals on DVD and don’t feel enough attention has been given to update this. Even the cleaning up of the film has been missed in places. I can see the appeal of the current release for people who don’t own these episodes on DVD at the moment, but for others who have them already, I cant imagine too many people wanting to buy a Standard resolution DVD release of something they already have .

I think I will wait a while until they try this again. I hope they do give this another go and next time they really do go all out to make it as visually exciting as it can be. The current work is a good start but by no means the finished article in my book.

The effects still need working on lots more can be changed and added to and I would hope it will eventually be released on Blue Ray. Then and only then will it be worth buying again.

85 Brian, """I’m guessing that they’re just getting a long overdue cleanup, like the Bond films got recently. 1-5 all need varying degrees of work."""

It would be a cold day in hell before Lowry ever got his hands on Trek. He costs a penny more than his nearest competitor, Joe Blow Restorations. Guess who Paramount would choose. lol.

GoldFinger, Dr.No, and You Only Live Twice look like they were shot yesterday. Naturally there will be those who complain that they look too clean. But screw them, the films look gorgeous. Sure, there could have been a little grain, these are films, but the results speak for themselves. The colors are vibrant, image is sharp, dirt is gone, etc. The only mistake I found unacceptable is the cropping on GoldenEye; it looks as if it were zoomed in on ever so slightly. I watched all of these Bond films on my 120" home theater screen and if tere were any gleaming flaws I would have noticed them. No dirt, no scratches, no blips, no wobble, no hairs! If Lowry were to get his hands on these films, TMP could look sharper and newer than Nemesis!

Then there is the FX issue, you can see the Mutara nebula straign through the Reliant and Enterprise. Imagine how that would look at 1080P. Something has to be done about the older Trek films. Sadly, given the el cheapo nature of Paramount, we're either going to get no FX tweaking or ANOTHER CRAPPY IN-HOUSE FX JOB, THIS TIME ON ICONIC PIECES OF CINEMA. I am in VFX, I know how the tools work, I utterly despise the TOS-R project.

What I hope happens is that the original film elements are restored, and those are digitally recomposited. Them we have the best of all worlds. The original work is preserved, the story is not somehow changed (No Greedo/Han scenario), and we get a clean digitally tweaked image.

Re: 78,78, 74:

Thanks. That project was a blast.

Who did we get? We got just about everyone. The entire original cast, plus a ton of guest stars and behind the scenes people. It was probably the only time such a large contingent of TOS people was ever gathered in one place in one week's time.

I believe that a lot of the interviews we shot ended up on the first season HD-DVD set (the yellow one) but I don't own it so can't confirm. As for the wrap arounds, we did two complete sets - one set for nimoy and one for shatner. Each of them did 3 segments for all 80 episodes, so 240 for each, 480 in total! I wrote the Nimoy segments, but by the time it came around to do the Shatner ones, I was tapped out so we hired another writer to do those.

There was a previous article stating "the films are getting a healthy scrubbing for their eventual Blu-ray release"

Time will tell how intense the scrubbing is and what changes will be made.

Don't hold your breath on anything mind blowing.

How bout remastering the original movies, just finished watching TWOK downloaded from xbox live. As great as it is, it could use a freshening. I just finished Shatman's new book and he mentioned how they kept cutting his budget in Star Trek V (which he directed). How successful does a franchise have to be to get for Paramount to pay attention and get it right?

I designed some slim case sleeves for the TOS remastered season one discs. I hated that bulky box with the awful accordion jewel cases that allow the discs to be damaged, as well as making them impssible to identify. I'm not selling these, so I hope CBS doesn't sue me. take a look, and if you want'em, just copy them. I downloaded to photobucket the 100% resolution images, so just print, cut, and insert. you can buy slimline transparent cases anywhere, but I got mine at Best Buy - $1.00 per case.

By the time the holidays roll around BD players will be at $299 or lower. Panasonic is putting out a model now at $349 and you know it'll be even cheaper during the holidays. There's also a bunch of cheaper players from other manufacturers coming out. Of course you could always pick up a PS3, which plays BD's beautifully.

BR player manufacturers should give the players away and cut deals with the software manufacturers, and not consumers.

I bought an HP printer today for chump-change, and the cash comes in for HP once I start buying HP proprietary ink cartridges.

The existing $400-$1000 price points are robbery, and BR will have an "Oh Sh*t" moment very soon when they realize that the victory over HD-DVD meant nothing. They should have focused on DVD instead.

I bought a small Magnavox DVD player in Walmart in December for $25, and the picture on my widescreen is as good as anything else I have (and I have lots).
