Preview Image From “The Way To Eden” Remastered

Are you Herbert? This weekend the remastered Star Trek episode "The Way To Eden" airs and CBS has sent over a shot of a newly designed Aurora.

check it out below

The Space Hippies Get a New Ship
Again CBS has taken a shot where the original crew were pinching pennies in waning days of the 3rd season (in this case gluing some nacelles on a Tholian model) and creating something more befitting the episode, which referred to the Aurora as a “space cruiser.” Behold the new Aurora. So what do you think? Is it Herbert?

Original

The Okuda Lowdown…a nod to Jefferies
Trek Remastered producer Mike Okuda provides some background on the new Aurora:

The Ship is based on Mudd’s freighter, with bigger engines and cool windows.

The registry number on the nacelles (probably not visible on screen) is NC-17740, which is the tail number from Matt Jefferies’ beloved 1935 Waco YOC biplane. Matt bought that plane shortly after the original Star Trek ended. He restored it to pristine condition and he enjoyed flying it for years. Even after he gave up his pilot’s license, he and Mary Ann cared for that beauty until he donated it to the Virginia Aviation Museum, where she is still on display.

The Remastered "The Way To Eden" airs this weekend in syndication, check local listings. See ST.com for a list of stations

Looks like a Yam with pontoons attached to it.

YEAAAAH, BROTHER!

I actually still enjoy this episode. That redesign looks very cool, almost like a 23rd-century VW Minibus (minus the peace symbol and gnarly curtains).

yay brother

Herbert! Herbert! Herbert!

weird smaller ship..

Looks pretty smokey inside that ship.

Definitely one of the more….erm, psychotic? episodes.

Gotta love them space hippies though.

I like the new ship.

The first thing I thought of is….is this a closeup of the ship used in “Operation: Annihilate!” and\or “Mudd’s Women”? They both, IIRC, seemed to have that same basic shape.

I guess this works, but that texture looks like the same cheap ass standard spaceship hull texture used by fifty billion amateur 3d modelers. Hell, *I’ve* used a texture just like that several times, especially way back in the day when I was working on a K-7 model.

Also, those “wings” look clipped from the Klingon Battle cruiser model.

The Aurora needs a big VW logo on the nose.

Nice ship, but looks like they forgot to put the stars in.

I am TOTALLY Herbert. Always have been. Never will not be.

This is a grate episode.

=h=

is this the episode with the Space Hippies?

It reminds me of the Virgin Galactic

I like it. Nice ship.

The episode, though, is still likely the worst bit of “Star Trek” ever made. Certainly the least timeless.

#14, I reach that man, I really do brother.

It looks like a giant submarine sandwich with nacelles. Herbert, for sure.

Love flappy-eared Dr. Severin and especially Charles Napier (Rambo II) as a singing hippie. Some good tunes, too. What was it?

“I’m gonna crack my knuckles and jump for joy,
Gotta clean bill of health from Dr. McCoy!”

The star trek Bloopers album has alot of outtakes from this episode..

“hey out there”

“I see you”

I don’t know how to do it, but it’s gotta be done..

“One..”

It does look better, but it almost could pass for a miniature “Colonial One”.

oh man that ship is now !!!

Yamie Herbert brother reaching out and being one with starchy tubers.

I reach.

You grock?

It really does look like a 23rd century VW minivan, doesn’t it? Most appropriate.

As for the texturing, I suspect this preview image is a bigger and clearer then we’ll get onscreen. After all, if I recall correctly, the Aurora is only ever seen in the distance of the viewscreen.

click to enlarge and look close you can see thed star field going by as the ship travels at speed

Looks like a VW mini-van to meto me.

maybe that is what they could call their next model.

The 2009 VW Herbert – Herbert as in Herbie the love-bug.

It starts to chime!

This is indeed the worst episode of the entire series.

I’m not sure this link will work but check out this design.

They are kind of similar in design, yes?

his planes at the Virginia Aviation Museum??? That’s just down the road from me, I’ll have to go see it.

Yes, this was a bit of a horrid and terrible episode, but to be a kid with a portable cassette tape recorder when it first aired, and recording the audio with a little hand-held microphone from the TV, I must admit that after hearing those hippie songs about a gazillion times, I am sort of fond of it now. Those songs have grown on me just as much as “Last Train To Clarksville” and “Let It Be”, I must have listened to the audio from the Eden episode EVERY DAY a dozen times after school for several years! “Go Now To Eden, Yay Brother” was like a Top 40 hit to me!
Later, when the tricorder-cassette player came out, it was hippie time all over again as I played the same tape in that machine a gazillion times in the 70’s!

If the ship’s a rock’n
don’t come a knock’n

Brother

This episode did not sound. It did not reach. It was not ONE, but NONE.

I am not Herbert.

Nice to have the ship redesigned. Looks good.

#20 & 17-You two both stole my lines!!! Gotta love the McCoy line and that ship is NOW, that’s real NOW!

Hey Man, That ship is real Now!!

I too had the portable cassette player with the microphone. The best thing that happened to me when I was a young teen was getting the “Superscope” cassette/radio combination where I could connect directly to the output of the TV, and record perfect audio of the original broadcasts. I still have the tapes, but don’t listen much. I can however identify with your comments about the songs from this episode. They grew on me too (but I didn’t listen every day). My fav is still “The Doomsday Machine” for action, character, and special effects. This episode was simply different. “Spock, what does “Herbert” mean?

They needed to add some hippie daisy decals to the outside.

I have to admit, I always kinda liked the Tholian-surplus Aurora, but this new version is fairly happening… I reach!

I never much cared for most of this episode, and it definitely hasn’t aged well, but I have to admit the part at the end where the hippies find out that Eden isn’t all they expected it to be, and especially what happens to Adam, did make for a more poweful ending than one would have expected…

Heading out to Eden, yay brother!

– …Certainly the least timeless. –

I know what you mean as it obviously is so much a product of the 60’s, but I don’t think it’s outdated in its overall message. I’d say Spock makes up for everything that was wrong with this ep when urging them to continue their quest for Eden: “I have no doubt you will find it… or make it yourselves.”

I’d say that’s timeless…

Will miss the upturned ‘nacelles’, as I rather liked that aspect of the original. At least it’s not a cobbled-together mish-mash of previous miniature craft anymore.

I don’t know either, but I want one! THIS should have been the new design!

this episode wasa slap against the Hippies, and thei naive world vie, the episode hile amusing, is noe the less not exactly in the top ten of trek lore, the remastered ship is a major improvement over the old effect. The old effect looks like someone stuck two warp engines on a tholian ship, If fact I would not be in least surprised if this was a case of reusing and old prop to save money. Of course the whole Doc Adams thing is clearly a cautionary tale cults and cult leaders.

The ship almost looks like a Xindi Insectoid ship, during Kirk’s era.

I wonder if they’ll bother to fix the shots where Shatner’s image is reversed once they beam down to “Eden.” There are two of them if I remember correctly.

I like the new ship. But this is still the worst TOS episode and possibly the worst Trek episode full stop imo.

Ahhh, yes, “Doomsday machine” was another that I recorded on audio cassette from it’s original broadcast, that music cheerfully haunted me throughout elementary school. i, too, still have those cassette tapes, but I think the last time I played on was before 1980. Imagine my excitement when those soundtrack CD’s to the original series came out!

#26—Couldn’t agree more. Perhaps no other episode is so dated and unable to withstand the passing of time. It was bad to begin with, but 40 years later, it’s utterly ridiculous. Thank goodness we episodes like:

“Where No Man Has Gone Before”,

“Balance Of Terror”,

“Space Seed”,

“Errand Of Mercy”,

“Friday’s Child”,

“Journey To Babel”,

“Mirror, Mirror”,

“The Trouble With Tribbles”,

“Amok Time”,

“Arena”,

“Day Of The Dove”,

“The Savage Curtain”, and

“City On The Edge Of Forever”.

That’s not a comprehensive list of great episodes, but that’s about how many it takes to get the “Eden” taste out of my mouth (and it’s Friday The 13th, so 13 seems like a good number)….

Charles Napier is a god among men.

How can you guys say this episode is dated? It had the same timeless message and plot as the epic classic, Star Trek V – The Final Frontier!

:-)

Scott B. out.

P.S. Nice new Aurora. It does have the necessary 60s vibe. I do wish they’d retained the more upbeat swept-up nacelles, rather than the Klingon downer Herbert nacelle placement.

I had the Tricorder cassette player, too…was that thing huge, or what? I can’t believe we ran around with that slung over our shoulders! But it served its purpose, along with the Communicator walkie-talkies.

Im gonna clap my hands and shout with joy i got a clean bill of health from Dr mccoy. Yeah brother. What a corney episode this was. I looked at it with more of a comedy then serious trek. But as they say, bad trek is still good trek, Yeah brother. No im not a herbert!!!!!! I think im not. Ok im spacing out.

Fun episode, no Herbert here!

#11:

The stars ARE there, but they’re skewed, showing that the ship is in motion.
