A typical "meh" third season episode, although that *is* a gorgeous matte painting by Max Gabl.

If you want to watch a story about an immortal man done the right way, rent Jerome Bixby's "The Man from Earth" on DVD.

It's Monday afternoon and I just finished watching this episode; I'm totally floored by the poor choice to edit out McCoy's dialogue!

Sorry to literally Monday Morning Quarterback, but...

1. M4 should have been CGI'd, the swaying movement of the model looks worse 40 years later.

2. The Enterprise on the table should have been CGI'd too with it's exterior navigation lights working, especially since the bridge controls were all flashing when Kirk peered into the "window".

3. Too bad we couldn't have called the androids "Replicants" or "Clones" and that might have given us a more modern take on the whole issue of morality and cloning. It would be interesting to see how a man of 6000 years would justify constantly creating life to end his own loneliness.

Anthony:

I love the recaps you guys do. In case I miss the episode, I don't miss the SFX. And the reviews are also very good to read.

I've taken the screencaps and use them in a slideshow for my screen saver as well as my desktop. I am currently using the Enterprise on approach to Memory Alpha.

Thank to Trekmovie for this service.

That's an amazing picture. Can someone at CBS-D make a collection of 1920x1200 (or 2560x1600) wallpapers, please?

This episode has never stood out in my mind or memory... but the part at the end where Kirk wants to "Forget" and Spock makes that happen totally blows me away... I so don't recall this. Odd. It's a middling to poor episode with an entertaining Mano-e-Mano Slapfight to bring some laughs. Flint's almost god-like powers and his Nomad-like droid M4(related to M-5?) are way over the top silly in some ways... but really it's the truncated romance that gets the Top Silly Romance Award. The Ultimate Conflict Robot Self Destruct comes into play to neatly end loose ends and Spock wipes the pain away from Kirk... Most assuredly, Flint goes right onto Rayna(#?) and shrinks his planet down for easy transport to a new location. ;-)

As Zefram Cochrane said in "Metamorphosis":

"Believe me, Captain, immortality consists largely of boredom."

And he'd only been at it for 150 years. Of course he was more or less alone.

I like that the new castle has an Observatory to look up at the heavens. Seems very appropriate for such a character, as he always was a man of science.

Or perhaps he was 6000 year old coward, you live that long see things getting better and it looks as if man is going to escape his past mistake and you conclude that man is beyond hope? If he can't figure things out after 6000 years of living then he's the one who is hopeless.

118, interesting analysis. But who are we to sit in judgment of a 6,000-year-old man? He was older than much of civilization itself. He had lived hundreds of lifetimes. Perhaps he knew the futility of civilization in a way no one else could have.

Perhaps, as well, he was wrong, but therein lies the tragedy, nonetheless.
