I am glad that BOBORCI reads these posts and checks in. I think it is very valid that a year early is not too soon to begin buzz for the movie by showing and advertising. The Iron Man example is perfect. They are right. NON trek fans know nothing about this upcoming movie. It is NOT too soon to get them interested. WE dont really need to be interested. We already are....Viral campaigns? BAH! Too hi tech....again ONLY WE would notice.... If they are truly after the general audience they need to reintroduce the characters, the ship, the fun, and they need to start NOW! I hope JJ and crew, like Marvel, do their own advance publicities but reading that Paramount will be a no show at San Diegos Comic Con this year does not fill me with hope....

Heres a great example. I just saw Prince Caspian today. A superior movie with better acting and story than most movies out. If Disney would have put that out it Spring it would have done phenonomally. But its been overlooked in the overcrowded Fantasy scifi movie market out there now. Now we may not get to see the other 8 Narnian Books made into movies...When the first one came out I was sure that all ten would be made...Now....Not so sure...
Disney also DID NOT DO MUCH ADVANCE PUBLICITY for this movie..NOT ENOUGH to earn it a place next to IRON MAN and INDY.
But it deserves to be there. BOBORCI PLEASE NOTICE! HINT HINT! hahah
I just rushed out and got and watched the 2nd Futurama DVD movie...GO 20th Century FOX Animation! I think they know what they are doing!

LASTLY--I agree STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE.....IS THE MOST COSMIC of all the TOS movies and the only one I really felt like it was a MOVIE and not a TV SHOW....Its not perfect due to most of those PRE PLANNED pre done various aborted tv projects merging and the rushed aspect....But the incredible music, Most of the effex work....the awe of seeing the new improved ENTERPRISE on the movie screen....I hope to have a similar moment with JJs Star Trek Next Year....we can hope...

#79---Absolutely. The novelizations are near forgotten gems. Although I still rank TWOK as my favorite (and the one, along with TVH, that I can get my kids to watch with me), TMP has a special place in my heart. I never appreciated it fully until I was an adult, but it is definitely the single most underrated ST film of all time.

as to TMP:

it has and always will be be my favorite ST movie to date.

outside of ST 4, it is the only one that TRULY had motion picture quality to it.

it was more than a Tv show on the big screen.

the DVD directors cut is amazing. it makes this movie very, very good and well paced.
the only things that were missing were the " admiral Nogura" scenes, and the Lori Catani (the dead transporter chick) scenes that revealed kirks post TOS affair with her.

with those scenes added, it would have made Kirk's attitutde and determination a little more understandable.

if you can find it.. read the novelization. then re watch the film
it is EPIC.

Actually, Paramount began working on a "Star Trek" movie project in early 1975. Roddenberry returned to the Paramount lot, to the same offices he had when the series was in production. #75's comment about 12-13 scripts or treatments was not far off the mark. If anything, he may be understating, as a lot of writers were contacted to submit story treatments.
ClosetTrekker's comments about "TMP" being underrated were right on the mark. That film has been one of my favorites for almost 30 years.

#75---That's all true, and I disagree with Sponica's dismissal of TMP. I think it is the most underrated Star Trek film of all, and ranks second on my list of all time favorites. It's a great science fiction story, and I think the Director's Cut cleans up some of the pacing problems very well. Great film that holds up alot better 30 years later than I ever would have imagined in 1979.

#25 You should watch ST I again and listen to the late great Robert Wise's commentary- that production inherited ALL of the pre-production costs of Phase II- all the set design, start up costs, costuming, casting, screen tests, I think there were 12-13 scripts/treatments completed (though I would need to check the book on that point again), and someone was paid for those, and I think this was over the course of two years before the movie came out.

On another point- isn't amazing how well we fans don't do with delayed gratification?

It's is in the hands of the of the filmmakers as to what should be released.

If they do not release pics today, life will go on.

If they release pics today, life will go on....and the same number of people that want to see the film, will still see the film.

Boborci, not only can I handle knowing a few production design "secrets" now rather than later, I actually WANT to see stuff now.

I'm going for all 4 days of Comic-Con, incl. preview night, and I'll be keeping my eye on things regarding the new Trek movie while I'm there.

We have had a preview of sorts of the Enterprise with the teaser, but it'll be interesting to see if any additional teases are released.

Of course, I'll leave it to the filmmakers to make the judgement as to what should be released.

After all, how much the audience knows beforehand has an impact on how the movie is percieved when viewed for the first time.

Boborci, if you're reading this, I'm watching for teases with no expectations of them.

Here's hoping that they find space for Shat's return in a Trek spinoff. It doesn't have to be an Abrams, it doesn't have to include the Next Gen people; just a reunion of the remaining original cast members, in their own particular timeline.
