The Alternative Realities DVD set is pretty big, being the first Star Trek set to include the remastered episodes without being called Star Trek-Season #: Remastered Edition. I mean, I would've bet anything that the set would've included the un-remastered versions of the TOS episodes. By the time it comes out, only two of the TOS-R seasons will be on DVD. I guess Paramount ain't kidding when they said they intend to replace TOS with TOS-R.

At a certain point, improved resolution of a filmed image just means you're getting a more accurate picture of the individual film grain particles. Having seen "The Menagerie" on the big screen, I think TOS-R is pretty close to that point, and I'm not sure if higher image resolution would be of any real benefit other than for advertising purposes.

My question is what are they going to do with all these episodes when Ultra High Def hits the market in the middle of the next decade? Will they redo everything again just for the 4K image that format will have? Paramount would have been smart if they did 4K on this version of Star Trek and down sampled it to 1920x1080P. So I supose when 4K hits the streets, we'll have to ONCE AGAIN buy all these episodes on disc format.

The CBS.com HD stream is pretty good. Remastered episodes, uncut. Only 2 so far as mentioned -- Corbomite Maneuver and WNMHGB.

In HD, the makeup in CM was hard to watch. Everyone's face looked greasy. I felt like putting my hand through the screen and wiping people's faces. It was not so in WNMHGB. However, the purple lipstick on everyone was a little distracting. It was interesting to look at the set surface textures -- you could see nails and defects in some of the finishes. Who knew back then that 40 years later they would be doing HD?

Anyway, HD is great and I have enjoyed all the remastering (not without a complaint here or there), but overall it has been nice.

Well, I did buy an ipod to download Ghost Hunters and BSG, but NBC pulled out all their shows, so I rarely download episodes except for Lost anymore.

For those having performance problems with iTunes:

Find the file on your Hard Drive and open it with Quicktime, Apple's DRM will allow it. Believe it or not, you'll get a better frame rate - iTunes is a dog, performance-wise. Don't even keep it running in the BG.

Good news on the Alt Reality set; I wonder about the remastered unaltered versions, though. Are they ever going to see the light of day?

What is up with iTunes? You would think they get with the program and keep updated with the TOS-R. Maybe they know I (and others) will wait until it shows up for download there.

I too enjoy the widescreen effects on the Xbox versions. I wouldn't want them there all the time, but it's fun to watch as something different.

The thing is, that's the only way to get some episodes in high def right now. I wish Microsoft would realize that, because if they posted more episodes as the only way to get Trek in High Def, they'd get some business.

I actually did the math, if they put out the whole series, I'd buy an Xbox 360 Elite with an additional drive and download the whole series.
