I'm sure this has come up before but I must have missed it ...

Engineering Red?!?

If this is supposed to take place prior to "Where No Man Has Gone Before", why are there ANY RED uniforms at all? Since The Cage uniforms and WNMHGB are the same: Blue, Green & Gold, why are there suddenly red uniforms? Did they experiment with red briefly sometime between 2254 and 2264 before the finally introduced it in 2265?

Frankly I prefer the more muted color scheme without the red. The bright red used in TOS was part of an overall design incorporating the same shade into a VERY colorful mix specifically to exploit the emergence of NBC's new color technology. ST II onward got it right. To the extent red is used a more muted tone like a maroon or rust is preferred.

But the look of The Cage is the most realistic depiction of TOS, which is probably why The Motion Picture looks so much like it. I always hated how future spinoffs continued to use the EXACT same set designs as the original, despite the fact technology has advanced so far past it.

But seriously, bright RED uniforms? I can only hope the set doesn't incorporate the color similarly to TOS, which is also incorrect for the time period this film is supposed to cover.

@ Ian B: I have to disagree. I would rather see sleeveless uniform tops for women instead of mini-skirts. Even Micro-Skirts make no difference for me, they could use regular pants instead. But sleeveless designs are great. That's why I adored Rommie on Andromeda or Teyla on Atlantis, mainly due to their sleeveless uniforms / outfits. I always wanted to see 7 of 9 or T'Pol in such uniforms. I order to avoid an overall party dress feeling just cover up any cleavage. Go tube top way up to the neck...and add some ranking insignia on the covered up chest ...that's the way the girls in my upcoming SciFi novel will be cled...

As for Uhura's image: that's not even sleeveless in my book. These are plain and simple cap sleeves, nothing more, but unfortunately nothing less...I really envy the mirror universe males. Well, I could live without bare midriff but sleeveless uniform tops would be a dream-come-true in Trek...

Now Paramount must reconsider the RELEASE DATE! They have to act quickly...

With Price of Persia being postponed, Transformers 2 being on halt due to Shia's car accident and Hancock and the Dark Knight ruling this summer's July, why don't they just postpone Transformers 2 and use the 6/26 date for Trek?

Avoiding direct competition with Wolverine, Terminator and Dan Brown is obligatory. July is wide open at this point. Ice Age 3 is a completely different beast, 2012 may become Emmerich's next bomb and Land of the Lost is nothing more but another Journey 3D...all movies Trek could beat... May is suicide for Trek, July would be the way to go...

Great work. Only looking at this version did I realise Uhura's uniform appears to be sleeveless... if that's the standard female uniform I'm a little concerned. I thought about this rather a lot some time ago as to cut a long story short I draw an "adult" sci-fi comic for a living and thus have to design some rather heh minimalist female outfits, and have thus spent many years pondering what works and what doesn't. And a conclusion I came to is that for some reason sleeves make all the difference; you can make the rest as minimal as you like, but without sleeves it's party wear and with sleeves it's a uniform. Which is why the original TOS womens' outfits are a design classic. They get away with the micro-mini skirt (or skorts, or skant, whatever) because the long sleeves "formalise" it into a uniform. Without the sleeves, you've got a party dress.

I've always thought the female uniforms are the icon, not the male ones, which are, when you've done and said all, just a sweatshirt and black trousers. For instance, my dear departed mum had no interest in Trek, but associated Uhura in her miniskirt with it very strongly. Pointy eared guy, beam me up, Captain Kirk and those girls' uniforms. They're the icons. If they're going "back to basics" they really shouldn't have messed with them. Theiss knew what he was doing :)

#95 Looks great. But the skin color is different from Steve's version. Did you change it yourself?

#90. John N - I like the coloured backgrounds. Some great work, nice to see all the visual speculation going on, the variations.

A few days ago, I was curious as to what Quinto might look like if half of his face weren't cut off, and came up with this, albeit a bit rough on the edges and not nearly as well coloured as Steve's excellent one. Still, here's my interpretation:
