Admiral Black, have you stopped for a single second to ponder that if they made the new CGI to the best of the ability of today's technology....it would completely and utterly jar with the 1960's sets and live action (as would the effects used in Enterprise's TOS homage that you seem to covet so dearly)? A balance had to be struck.....and strike it they did, bang in the middle of where it needed to be. The work doesn't bowl you over so the viewer is jarred out of their train of thought, it is just cleaner and better effects than existed presently - which is exactly what 99% of the people wanted.

I'm so glad they got the contract, as if someone with your school of thought got it, I'd fear fear for what we ended up with. I reckon it would be like two shows, one from the 1960s and one from today, stuck horribly together. CBS digital fortunately know their onions.

I can see why there are so many of these on my local Best Buy shelf.

I have to say that after viewing Enterprise’s attempt at TOS, DS9’s attempt at TOS, and TOS-R, I like Enterprise’s take the best, DS9’s second, and this cheap CGI dead last. I don’t know how See B.S. Digital got the contract but it was not proven to be the right decision. At least for me.

    Set returned.

I can tell you that TPTB have done some additional tinkering with "The Deadly Years" for this set:

The awkward transition from live action to a new orbiting special effect shot (after Kirk has been embarrassed by trying to sign the fuel consumption report twice) which in the aired version allowed some of the original effect shot to bleed through has been fixed.

Also during the Romulan attack, the soundtrack has been altered ( again ). New sound effects ( specifically photon torpedoes and hull strikes) have been added as the birds-of-prey fire on the Enterprise.

Picked this up. The two episodes I've sampled so far were great. The only problem I have so far is that the transfer does look a bit dark compared to season 1. I'm losing a lot of detail in the shadows. But yeah, upconverted on a HD TV, these episodes have never looked better.

After seeing this on an up converted player all I can say is: Yep, "The Doomsday Machine" is the jewel of this project.
